Thank you, Greg Williams for making the right call today-- Winning today would have essentially eliminated us in the race for a franchise altering QB Winning today would have meant more years of mediocrity at the QB position Winning today would have gotten a Johnson parade for Gase Winning today would have gotten Darnold more benefit of the doubt as a franchise QB Winning today would have discouraged the majority of the Jets fan base Winning today would have been Same Ole Jets, horrible but not horrible enough We haven't gotten the pick yet, but at least for today--the right call was made for the right result. G-Dubs, thank you--because everyone who truly loves our team knew a win today wasn't a win at all. Signed, FOF
Williams won't be on the team next season in all likelihood so it makes no sense for him to contribute to the Tank. I think this was just a super boneheaded call.
I said the same thing as Booger in another thread. It wasn't done to tank. The Jets aren't tanking. It's just most of the fans who want them to lose every game. If Williams did call that coverage knowing that it would fail, then it's because he hates Gase more than he hates losing, and would get more satisfaction saddling Gase with an 0-16 record than he would feel shame for making the call or having an 0-16 record himself. I would be surprised if he is that petty, but he could be. I just think he thought it was the best way to stop Carr since it had been working for most of the 4th Qtr.
Boomer is an idiot. Calling for his head? Ok. But he’s usually a big picture guy so surprised he’s that mad. We owe Williams lol. Everyone knows that.
As a Jets fan that is firmly behind losing out and ensuring Trevor Lawrence it was a great call. As a fan of football in general he should be fired this morning and should be a stain on his resume for eternity.
I was watching the score, and thought this idiot team was going to blow it by winning, so shut off the score, came back 5mins later and Raiders won, I seriously hope they gave Williams the game ball.
Regardless of record or even team, I'm a big fan of the D blitzing in that situation rather then letting the QB sit back there and launch a 50/50 ball to the endzone. People ripping on him for leaving the CB one-on-one with Ruggs - If you are an NFL rated player then you accept that challenge and have belief you can hold up until your front gets home.
Blitzing is one thing,an all out blitz with our cbs is another thing. When the defense plays the hail mary prevent the refs never throw flags against the defense all they have to do is knock the ball down. Defenses have a huge advantage on hail mary. By coming with an all out blitz if it does not get the QB a good QB completes a good deep ball around 50 % of the time? Add to that the chances one of the guys in the secondary grab one of the receivers. playing man coverage if the is a foul the refs are going to call a foul.Hail mary completion is probably less than 5%. Than is why we remember them Flutie,Rodgers Murray, etc. Very dumb call. Thankful he did it,
There was a stat on SVP that said it was the first all out blitz in that situation in 15 season's. #Savage
FWIW...that's not the right call on that play with the CB talent on the field at that time. No other way to look at it. that being said.....it worked out for those that want the jets 0-16.
Albert Breer of SI noting that Williams may go down in history as a Jets legened: https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/12/07/mmqb-week-13-jets-raiders-jaguars-trevor-lawrence-watch
This is why any notion that "this is what Williams does" is absurd. Williams has NEVER done this in his career - no one has. Blitzing is not the point - an all-out cover 0 blitz leaving a rookie undrafted cornerback on an island with a guy who ran a 4.27 40 in the combine and was drafted 12th overall is indefensible. Don't believe me? Ask Derek Carr:
I said this on another thread but I think Williams made the right call. The situation was 4th and about 8 yds. with about 19 seconds left. If he stops this play, the game is over and the Jets win so he went all in to get to the QB. If the Jets went into a prevent, that would have given Carr an opportunity to get a first down and maybe two more cracks at the end zone. The Jets at 0-11 had nothing to lose so he took the gamble. I think it was a gutsy call that just didn't work out. If the Jets had gotten a sack, He would be hailed as a genius. The only possible criticism is that Williams should have known that he has no decent pass rushers, so his chances of getting to Carr were diminished. Still even forcing Carr to hurry the throw might have been effective as was evident in the 4th Q. Give the Raiders credit for picking up the blitz and for Carr stepping into the pocket which bought time for Ruggs to get deep. Finally, it's easy to blame Williams for this loss and forget the three turnovers that stopped promising scoring drives earlier in the game. Typical Jets dysfunction.
