Me and my Dad have an ongoing debate about Coles. My Dad thinks Coles is a just a good #2 guy. I think he is a #1 and a pretty good one at that. I wanted to get an idea of what other people think about this.

He's a good #1 if complemented well by someone such as Cotchery. He can't do it by himself like guys like Steve Smith can.

Your Dad is crazy. Coles has proved he's a great #1 WR. He's proven that here and also in Washington. He's played much better than much more talked about WR's like T.O. this season. Yeah, slap Buress on the cover of that Magazine. What bullshit.

I would say #2. Because when he is doubled this year, he's quiet, although it opens up Cotchery, Baker, and McCareins...The elite ones can overcome those double teams and still make plays.

Not saying Coles doesn't give the effort, because he always does, even blocking good. But when he's doubled up he's relatively quiet...

How can you even ask that. Coles has emerged this year as a top 10 WR in the league, at the least.

with Penny he is for sure, otherwise he may only be a great #2.

Also what was that stat from th GB game about he and Driver being in the top 5 for either yards or catches over the past X years? Cause that would be something to throw at your dad

Depends on your definition of #1 receiver. If your idea of a #1 receiver is one of the top 32 WRs in the league, then hell yes. If your definition is as someone who can dominate a game, then the answer is probably no. There are only a handful like that, though, and we should be grateful we have a receiver of Coles's caliber.

I would say that he is definitly a #1. He's 9th in the league in yards. That stat alone says that he is an extremely capable #1. Also, I partailly agree with an above poster who said that he thrives with Pennington. Penington's accuracy over the middle plays right into Coles strengths.

I think the bigger question is if Cotchery could emerge as a #1 WR after a couple more years.

I think that coles is OUR legitimate #1 reciever, he fits perfectly into our system. In NFL? That im no too sure about. I was having a similar conversation about Marvin Harrison. Is he the true number one that he's been showing over many years or is Peyton Manning just making him look THAT good. Because IMO, Peyton and Harrison have very similar chemistry to that of Penny and Coles.

When hes doubled, he wont break a game open, true, but there are very, very few guys in the game who can, the Steve Smiths and Marvin Harrisons of the league. But Coles when doubled is still productive, he doesnt disappear under a double team, which to me is the definition of a lead receiver. Dont double him, and hell kill you like he killed the Vikings. Double him, and he may not do quite so much, but you cant take him completely out of the game, hell always be productive.

Honestly, I thought this question was unfounded before the season had even started, given what weve seen from Coles in the past. The fact that hes now the team MVP and about to break the franchise record for receptions should really end this conversation once and for all.

    He's a #1. Not an elite #1, or top 5 WR, but he's a solid #1.

Coles is a lot like Martin, Very Productive and consistent but not a game breaking player. He is solid and is going to have a near HOF career when all is said and done. He is a solid No. 1 WR who you can count on every game.

He clearly is a top 15 guy and if he was playing with an elite QB and a good running game he might even be a game breaker?

Lower end #1 or upper end #2 in my opinion. He's a great possession guy to compliment a deep threat that we do not have.

I think he's a #1, just not one of the top 5 WRs in the league or anything. Top 10 or top 15 for sure though. The biggest problem with Coles is his size, I remember in the Oakland playoff game years ago Coles just dissappeared, and there was talk of adding a bigger target in the offseason. The result I think was McCarreins or some other guy I've already forgotten that didn't pan out (I think it was someone else). Steve Smith is smaller though and somehow he's still an easy #1, so that probably doesn't matter. We'll see how it goes with Coles once we make the playoffs this year.

That wasn't the question...Coles IS a good #1 Receiver...just not an elite receiver...you do not have to elite to be a good #1 guy. Just drawing clarity.

    Peace!

I've been following football for 40 years and I don't know what a #1 receiver is. It is a ridiculous meanlingless term that has nothing to do with winning football games. Receiver stats are based on numerous factors, from QBs to offensive systems, to the OL, etc. Better to look at a team's WR corps than to one guy. If you do that, you'll see that Coles and Cotchery are having one of the best years a pair of receivers has ever had for the Jets.

Besides, these elite receivers everybody talks about - Ownes, Harrison, Johnson, - have 0 rings. It is not the position that determines championships. Who cares what nomiker you give Coles.
