You're saying fire Gase and bring in someone else... how much worse can someone else do? Well they can be just as bad as Gase. And who would want to come in a quarter of the season in, unable to evaluate talent, install their offense in a timely fashion, and select their own players. Without the preparation necessary, it's likely they'll do just as bad as him. And NY fans have no patients.
Sit him with this shoulder injury, let the world see how terrible Flacco or Mike White is with this team. Bring Darnold back against the Dolphins or some other crappy team for the passing numbers just to keep his value from plummeting. He's done here.
Bring in someone else? I never said that. You get rid of Gase and promote JBC to OC and let him work with the offense. See if he can ignite something in Darnold that Gase obviously can't. You would run the same scheme, the playcalling would be different and maybe he wouldn't try and fit square pegs into round holes. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Keeping Gase is just that.
I'm not talking about cap space, I'm talking about filling out a roster. How many starting-quality players on on the roster? By my count, we have a whopping 6: Becton, Q. Williams, Mann, Hennessey, Darnold, and Crowder. We have another 7 or 8 that warrant being a backup on a real NFL roster. Let's say we hit on all 11 picks in the upcoming draft, and we get 6 new starters and 5 new backups. Assume we can resign anybody we want from the current roster for now. Now we have 12 starter-quality players, with 2 of them being QBs, who aren't going to be on the field at the same time, and 13 back-up quality players. That's 25 players, or less than 1/2 of a roster. The Jets can't afford to have a player of Sam's caliber on their roster if he isn't starting--they HAVE TO TRADE HIM FOR A PLAYER OR FOR PICKS.
Dude. Did you watch the Eagles game last night? Wentz took that game over and willed his team to a victory. He ran for his life last night with TWO rookie tackles (Lane Johnson was in and out), two backup guards and his top receiving threat being Greg Ward. They ran bootleg right and bootleg left every other play. And they beat the 49ers at home. There wasn't any magical coaching performance yesterday by Peterson. They flanked literally every first down play with a second down run up the gut. Gase is a bad coach. He's not the worst coach of all time. He's not calling 26 runs up the middle in a row with no passing plays. Sam sacked himself last week. Sam missed a wide open Cager for a 30 yard play when he got slammed to the ground. Sam refuses to throw the ball over the middle at pretty much all costs. The run blocking sucks but the pass protection has been OK this year. I mean damn. The coach blame to lift up the player is getting ridiculous here. The player doesn't look good at all. He's 30 games in at this point and is still struggling with the same things he struggled with as a rookie. His footwork is just awful at all times.
They can get a 1st round pick , no doubt. It all depends on the team. Many here assume that he'll be going to a scrub team like the Jets. Not so. A team like Tampa or Pittsburgh who are very good teams would be the perfect place for Sam. Both teams have a real Coaching Staff. Sam has got all the talent , all he needs is better guidance. If you look at all the games he's had trouble in, for the most part, it's OL that has not given him enough support. Yes, he can be held accountable for some bone head plays, but with bad receivers and a poor OL, I'd like to see him with a real team so that he can be better judged.
So you'd trade Sam for a 4th round pick? The dreams of getting even a second rounder are gone. Any team who trades for him has to pickup a $25 million option or risk wasting a pick on a rental that might not win their starting job. He needs to go on a year or his value is mid round pick or nothing.
His footwork appears to be his biggest weakness. The question is can it be fixed or is this who he is? And is this being worked on every week? Missing an open Cager on the play where he got hurt was difficult to watch.
There is zero chance they get a first round pick. Which team would do that and be instantly forced to pay him $25 million?
IF the plan is to draft Lawrence, then yes, I'd trade him for a 4th before the trade deadline. Obviously I'd prefer more, but if that's his market value right now, so be it. If I were the GM, I'd keep Sam, get the #1 and trade down repeatedly to get as many picks as possible to try and rebuild this roster. Sam will be more than serviceable while the roster gets rebuilt to set the table for our QB choice in 2024. That's just my opinion, and I don't think there's any realistic chance it happens, so there's no point in exploring it further.
Dude! Do REALLY believe Wentz could do that on the Jets? C'mon! And Petersen has proven himself a FAR FAR better coach than Gase. Wentz may be better than Darnold, IDK, but we'll never know as long as Darnold plays under Gase (or isn't playing for a coach as good as Petersen with weapons as good as Wentz has). As to "willing his team to victory", how much more "will" does Darnold need to show than taking it 45 yards to the EZ by himself? And instead of forcing Sam to play from the pocket, as that's not his best platform, why not call "bootleg right, bootleg left every other play"? So Sam sacked himself. It happens. It was embarrassing sure, but it happens. And even Peyton Manning missed wide open guys occasionally. Does Darnold need to improve on these things, his footwork, and his accuracy? Asked and answered - yes he does, but it makes that much harder in the circumstances he's been in and continues to be in. You're way underestimating the negative impact that Gase and the lack of talent have had - and continue to have - on Darnold.
He took it 45 yards to the house and then disappeared the rest of the games against the Broncos, travelling cross country, on three days rest, with an UDFA third string quarterback. He lead the team to one touchdown and had a chance to go on a game winning drive to win the game and didn't. His last two drives went 11 plays for 22 yards. Would Wentz have done that on the Jets? Yeah dude. He pretty much did last night on the road. Again. Go back and look who played and how they played. Did you watch? Did you see any offensive genius at work in the playcalling? Or did Wentz just strap the team on his back and will the team to victory? They ran a wildcat play and Wentz was roughing up the corner who tried to jam him. He dove twice face first to try to get a first down. He was stiff arming dudes in the pocket. He threw a dime to an UDFA names Travis Fulgham from Old Dominion on his third team in two years to win the game... Losing that game to the Broncos is inexcusable when you score one offensive touchdown and get giftwrapped a pick 6 by the defense. And it's on the QB a much as anyone.
Yeah losing to the Broncos was terrible, but that had much more to do with Gase than Darnold. If you can't accept that I got nothing more to say.
I mean if you are JD and you know by now Darnold is not the answer, you need to salvage him for something. IDGAF what it is but he can't just walk.
Travis Fulgham man. That's how you go win a game as the QB with stacked adversity. Peterson went for the tie last week rather than giving Wentz a shot at winning the game and publicly called him out and said he had confidence issues. And the dude dropped that one in, in crunch time.
One thing I noticed around the NFL is how great some of these WR catches are and how they truly help their QB. Especially in Buffalo, but I noticed it in many games. Crowder helps Sam, but who else? No one.
So, because Darnold - despite the obstacles he;s had to deal with as you've acknowledged - isn't as good as Carson Wentz? WOW! Breaking news! Here's some more "news": you don't need a great QB to win a SB. Sure, I'd love it if Sam turns out to be great, or failing that, we get LAwrence he turns out to be great, but if you don't have good coaching and supporting talent, it doesn't matter. Wentz has been there, and has the confidence to do what that clip shows. Darnold's confidence is shaky. You're comparing apples to oranges. EDIT: And because Wentz has had a lot of success and proven himself he is able to ignore what Petersen told him and did what he thought was best. We just heard Gase admit that he's got handcuffs on Darnold, and Sam certainly doesn't have the record or confidence to be able to simply ignore him (although I wish he would!).
I've said it before: This will work itself out. If the Jets are picking #1, Sam's value will be pretty low since he just led a team to the worst record in the NFL. If he shows his worth, the Jets will win some games and won't be the #1 overall pick to take Lawrence. So this is a waste of time discussing it.
One being awful is completely mutually exclusive from the other (in terms of performance, not necessarily the cause, but thats not the point) They both suck right now. End of discussion.
