Was listening to Canty and Rothenberg in the car earlier. The guys were surprised even Ira was out on Sam now. Per Ira: - If the Jets wind up with the 1st pick, how can they pass on Lawrence with unanswered questions with Sam? - If they fire Gase mid-season, who is left to help Sam progress? Who will be able to come in and help Sam progress? He doubts we will see progression from Sam this year. - Not Sam's fault based on poor coaching but the team would have to move on.
nothing against Darnold (but there is) - 32 teams with #1 pick would take Trever - he is that good of a prospect and will upgrade everyone. Not to mention cheaper for 3-4 years.
Jim Bob Cooter, Jets current Running Backs coach, who happens to be a former QB coach and Offensive Coordinator. He got the best out of Matt Stafford, and he knows how to design a route that goes more than 5 yards deep.
Unfortunately, I 100% agree. If we are continuing to rebuild, you have to take a "fresh" rookie QB contract.
The question isn't "Who will be able to help Sam progress?", it's "Why are we continuing to retard his progress by keeping Gase?". Basically ANYONE - in fact having no one to coach him - would be an improvement over Gase.
If by chance Jets do garner the #1 (which I'm sure they will blow that chance by winning the last game of the season) drafting Lawrence would only happen if Gase is gone and they give up on Sam.. Personally I think CJ should can Gase if 0-4 - the new coach would have to provide Sam a guy to help him develop - if Greg Williams, for example turns out to be that coach. It's a tough call if that #1 is there......I still feel Sam is their franchise QB. Look at what he has to work with for cripes sakes? You can't be wanting to hang the coach because you think he sucks as an OC and also dump the QB. Makes no sense. I hoping they don't get the #1 - just get as many top picks and build around Sam
Just listening to Bart Scott and Rex Ryan. Rex thinks they give Gase the year. Bart thinks they have to fire him. They both agree that if the Jets get #1 pick, they have to take Lawrence. We are still rebuilding and you have to take the fresh rookie QB contract.
Sam wasn’t the problem yesterday, if he keeps playing like he did yesterday for a big majority of the remaining games than he will be the qb next year. If he isn’t consistent and they end up with the 1 he won’t be.

Gase will get the year as the owners have made too many positive statements to climb down this early. Sam’s position gets reviewed after Week 17. I think we might have ruined him. I suspect we’ll get a Top 5 pick and not a Top 1 pick so talk of Trevor is probably moot anyway.
