I thought Becton looked great for a rookie LT, especially given the Covid preseason this year. I saw several post praising Fant who I was underwhelmed watching. He looked like he was on skates most of the game, constantly getting blown back into the pocket. A few times right into Darnold and once into Bell. Interior looked bad, both guards are below avg players and it showed. Hopefully Mcgovern can lift them to avg,or slightly above in another 4-5 weeks. Honestly think we will be looking at 2-3 new O lineman this time next year.
I thought Fant/Van Roten were terrible, Darnold had almost no time to throw and when he did the receivers got no separation
Yeah he definitely had lanes to navigate up and out of the pocket. And there were no free runners. We had a body on a body at all times, which is a massive improvement.
Last year's glaring weaknesses are still this year's weaknesses. The interior line and run blocking. Sure we've got a huge new LT and Fant is an upgrade inthe passing game at least on the other end based on game 1, but these weren't the biggest problem areas. In fact, if the line had a strength it was those two spots. The problem is still up the middle. I never got the Lewis hype, he was just better than the turd he replaced. Van Roten looks a stop gap starter at best and McGovern struggled. The latter two might be marginal upgrades at best. Yes, it was the Bills who are good up front and yes, it was a tough preseason to bring a new line in and gel. They might improve. We'd better hope that they do or it is going to be a long year.
We have Clark who might eventually start at an OG position when he returns and learns the ropes. I wonder if Douglas has his eyes on C prospects in the 2021 draft, which can push McGovern to an OG spot. IIRC, McGovern was an OG before moving to C after Paradis went down.
I remember your avatar but forget your old username. It’s driving me nuts. Some stats: Rush attempts: 15 - NFL rank 32 Longest run: 8 yards - NFL rank 32 Rushing yards: 52 - NFL rank 31 Tackle for loss: 6 - NFL rank bottom 3rd Time of possession: 18:44 - NFL rank 32 Penalties: 9 - NFL rank 32 Punts per play (lol): .11 - NFL rank 32 I know, stats schmats, and it’s just 1 game, but the numbers are as ugly as the game was. The Jets are last or close to it in a lot of offensive categories. The Bills defense was expected to be good, and a major positive is that Bechton held his own. If anyone has a good sight for OL grades please post a link. I’m having a hell of a time finding one.
Sorry, but I have to strongly disagree with the bold. Shell and Edoga were awful at RT, and were every bit as bad as the interior of the line. Beacham wasn't a whole lot better, either. Lewis was the highest-rated OL last year.
is Baldinger on Woody Johnson's payroll? Seems like every year he praises the Jets in his videos and the Jets always suck
Agree with 1st statement but second I disagree with and here is the proof: The Jets allowed a pressure rate of 44.7 percent in Week 1 – the highest of any team on Sunday, according to NextGen Stats. Darnold was sacked three times, was constantly flushed out of the pocket and was knocked down four times. The Jets also couldn’t gain any leverage on the ground. The running game finished with just 52 yards on 16 carries and no touchdowns – the worst performance in the Gase era since Week 8 of 2019 when the Jets rushed for just 46 yards on 14 carries. I watched the game yesterday and was not please with the meddle of the line getting push back constantly...couldn't handle stunts.
Darnold has horrible footwork and mechanics but he's at his best when he can step up in the middle when he throws. He couldn't do that Sunday the middle was constantly getting pushed back
Yes. Unfortunately it speaks to how bad the line was last year to be somewhat pleased with our effort on Sunday. The line wasn't good but it looked better. McGovern, Lewis and Van Roten got bullied. The tackles looked fine.
He praises many players each week. It just so happens that sometimes, unfortunately for you, they are NY Jets.
Lewis only played toward the end of the season though, when the schedule was a lot easier. That could explain his rating, not that I put much stock in them. He was still poor though. I agree that Shell and Edoga were mostly awful, but they were better than the interior was comparatively. Saying that the tackles were the strength of the line wasn't meant as an affirmation that they were good, just that they weren't the worst thing on it.
