I honestly don't think giving Gase 3-4 more games to turn things around will help. He can always resort back to his old habits. He's not moving this team forward, Sam has taken a step backward. He's not mentoring Sam, he doesn't have the creative mind. When you see how "hapless" the team was in the first half of the game, you have to realize that he can't prepare this team to start games. His adjustments at halftime should have been in the gameplan at the start of the first quarter. The second half adjustments may be too late to matter when your team is down 21-3. If I were JD, I'd sever the ties NOW and get a new coach in there to righten the ship.

Problem is Gase and Douglas are peers, so the latter can't fire the former on his own. This type of arrangement might work in organizations that have owners who know something about football(Steelers and Chiefs), but it's been a failure for us.

You may be right that Gase needs to go now, but that's not going to happen. Even if things don't get any better over the next 4-5 games, it's not likely to happen. Also, you've forgotten the Jets' org chart. Gase doesn't report to Douglas, he reports directly to Chris Johnson. Douglas may not have the power to fire Gase, but even if he does, they're friends, supposedly on the same page, and it may be less likely that Gase gets fired than if Chris Johnson is making the decision.

And that's my thoughts. The Johnsons have NO CLUE on how to own a football team. Leaning on other football wizards who advised them to hire Idzik and Maccagnan shows they should not be owning a team in football and stick to their day jobs of making baby powder. We need new owners to drain the Secaucus swamp.

We should of canned Gase last year we all knew he was going to be a lame duck coach this year.. what’s the point in that... Lincoln Riley would be awesome, I’d like Harbaugh or Biennemy too.. Anything is better cocain eyes

But Cocaine Eyes (great nickname) did have a good second half going 6-2. I can't see another 1-7 start, especially with a much tougher schedule.

Harbaugh isn't going to go anywhere without full control so he's out. I have to believe Lincoln Riley will have a similar mindset and will be the Cowboys coach if they miss the playoffs.

Eric Bienemy seems like a good choice. Byron Leftwich is another name that could be hot and Don Martindale from the Ravens might have a connection to Douglas.

Keep an eye out for Dan Mullen from Florida too.

You could be right, but I see no reason Riley should think he should have full control. He has zero experience in the NFL and should want to focus on coaching/fixing Sam Darnold and the offense. He would have what appears to be a very good GM, a lot of draft picks over the next two years, and a lot of cap space. He should be content to come into a situation with a lot of potential where he could be set to succeed without breaking a sweat.

Because he can stay at Oklahoma and keep spitting out Heisman trophy winners and become more of a God than he already is.

College coaches who get the label of quarterback whisperers hold all the cards. Why should he want control with no experience? You're right. But if he wants it, he can walk away from the negotiating table and go 11-1 and to the CFB playoff ever year for a couple million dollars a year in cheap ass Oklahoma.

I don't think your premise is wrong. But these coaches have a lot more negotiating leverage than you think. We're also a bottom 5 franchise in the worst media market in the country with horrible ownership.

Detroit, Denver, Houston, and Atlanta are much more desirable landing places right now. 3/4 and maybe 4/4 have better QB situations. If Lincoln Riley comes here, I'd imagine he'd want to go get his guy and move Darnold, not fix him.

All true, plus look at the actual track record here of the Johnsons retaining control. If there was ever any situation where a prospective HC demanded he be allowed full control, it's this one. That said, I still think Douglas is a good GM and he shouldn't have to be subordinate to a HC, so whoever they get needs to be able to work well with JD, which is why he needs to be the one doing the search and the selection. I don't think any good HC who is sure of his own abilities would have a problem working under Douglas, and I can't think of anyone who might be available is such a slam dunk that I would fire Douglas so I could sign him. The only issue of control is that the Johnsons have to contractually agree to be hands off on all football decisions and leave those to JD and his new HC.

I respect you Vilma, but if we have the #1 pick, a ton of cap space , we become very desirable. The smart thing is fire Gase. Douglas still has five years on his contract after this season. I have not seen or heard anything with him being incompetent. Change the structure of the team to where the coach is under the GM and allow the football guy (Douglas) to hire the coach. Ownership should make sure you at least call Riley and or make clear the money to hire him is available. Like the idea of Bienemy. You most likely lose Williams as he wants to be the head coach but if you have a Lawrence/new qb/ think you can fix Darnold, you want your head coach and qb relationship to be stable. If an OC fixes Darnold after what we have seen, the OC probably gets a HC job. If the head coach is the functional OC then that doesn't occur. That is probably the difficulty Bienemy has faced as everyone wonders how much is the success really Reid not Bienemy. Whoever Douglas thinks is best ultimately should get the job however Douglas would know his ass is also on the line. If it doesn't work in three more years hire Nick Saban as President of the team and let him run the organization LOL.

At this rate, unless week 1 was an aberration, I can't imagine Gase makes it 6 weeks.
I saw a stat this morning that showed, he's never had good QB numbers except when his QB was named Manning. His players dislike him, he's weird and prickly, with no record to substantiate his 'tude.
Was last year's finish really enough to keep him around?

I think the Jets should go for an established guy if they can. The fanbase cannot tolerate another failed experiment. You might hit, but you might not.

Of course you could be right, but I think every HC who has had total control failed. They said it was too much to think about. They said that if they had it to do all over, they would never do it again.

Riley may not have any desires to coach in the NFL and may be perfectly content at Oklahoma. Then again, he has pretty much reached the pinnacle at OK. I forget whether he has won a national title or not. If not, he might want to stay until he accomplishes that. If he's already accomplished that or doesn't care, then his ego might want him to take the challenge of coaching in the NFL. Yes, the NYC area media can be tough, but if he wins here, he would be hailed and be the toast of the town.

I disagree that Detroit, Denver, and Atlanta are even more desirable landing places, much less, "much more desirable." Matthew Stafford is already 32. The Lions are awful and may have worse owners than the Jets. Matt Ryan is already 35. Atlanta seems to be moving backwards rather than forwards. Drew Lock better than Darnold? Sorry, that's just laughable. Houston is the only place that has a better QB situation and a better situation overall.

We do have horrible ownership, and that in and of itself may be enough to keep anyone good from accepting the HC position. If Chris Johnson assured him that Douglas and he (Riley) would have completely control of the football operation, and Riley respects Douglas, it could be a desirable spot to him. Then again, he may prefer to live in middle America rather than NY/NJ even if he would be interested in the HC job of the Jets otherwise.

Better situations doesn't necessarily indicate they have a better quarterback. There is no massive commitment to Lock and they have young skill positions galore along with a cornerstone edge rusher in Chubb who can replace the HOF edge rusher they have on the roster.

The Lions suck with crappy ownership. But Stafford is still a really good player with two young runningbacks and a Pro Bowl receiver. Patricia is a clown - that roster is better than they've played for him because he refuses to play anything but bump and run regardless of the game situation or team he's playing.

Quarterbacks are playing later and later. Matt Ryan is older, but he's also a borderline Hall of Fame player. That's another team that has created a pipeline of great skill position players.

They're all better situations than the Jets because they actually have talent on their team. We have a no name defense with one good safety, the worst skill position players in the league bar none, no pass rush, an interior offensive line that just got destroyed and a load of guys on one year contracts.

Don't forget - we're a step child in the biggest media market in the country without our own stadium and bottom five owners if not the worst. This is a bad situation dude.

At this point, I'm watching for Gase firing. The Jets always seem flat under him and I'm glad the Johnsons have put him on notice. That makes Douglas's job easier since he is friends with Gase. I like what Douglas did in the draft and would like to see who he would pick as coach. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired with this team. Now, who should be getting interviews as coach?

I believe that is part of the problem. The Jets have no identity in New York. The Giants are the boss and the Jets have to share a stadium with them. The Jets need their own stuff be it in New Jersey upstate New York, Long Island or one of the 5 boroughs. But they need to stop sharing.

That's why the West Side Stadium would've put this team on the map.

Despite all of the logistical nightmares it would've caused and the burden on the tax payer. I was too young to really have thought about those things and understand all the nuances but I wish it happened.

It's too late. We'll be sharing the Meadowlands for the next 30 years.

The West Side stadium would have been great. It was ruined by the Dolans of MSG. They paid off the politician for that area and he killed it. If I'm not mistaken the rail yards still aren't being used. So it was just pure greed and evil.

This is exactly what happened, although Woody is not completely blameless. He could have fought it in court and won. Instead he felt it was easier to play #2 to the Maras in the NJ swamp. Incredibly dumb decision on his part ... he lost tons of $ to save pennies.
