Sorry my friend. I hope you won't think I am hijacking your thread but I have a question for you, if you don't mind. My son is a huge music fan. He likes rock, mostly classical rock. Age 14. He wants to learn how to play guitar. He thinks he can learn thru youtube. What do you say? Is it doable?
Brook, just a word of advice. If he’s playing smoke on the water backwards at 78 rpm on the stereo he’s involved in satanic rituals and your goats are at risk.
Not at all brook. That’s awesome! He can definitely get started on YouTube. This way he can get a feel for it before spending on lessons. At some point, he will probably want to get lessons as he advances. 2 good YouTube guitar instructors are martysmusic and papastache101. They have a lot of free lessons on YouTube , and also websites with free content
14 is a good age to start....a tad "late" but thats's easily overcome. start with youtube BUT ultimately you will have to get the in-person lessons to really get it going. lessons are costly so good for youtube in the beginning. see how serious he is - and guide the amount of practice time per day.
I'd agree with this. Meant to post this last week but forgot. The problem with online and other teach yourself guides is that bad habits can easily creep in and limit progress. Get them started, then get them some in person help and then you're pretty much good to go. Most greats are natural and largely self- taught. It's the rest of us that need help. @typeOnegative13NY also a Strat fan. All I've got now is a 12 string acoustic and the same Strat I've had for about 3 decades.
That’s awesome. The older the strat the better! I also agree. If you really going to take it seriously and learn, it’s best to start with someone teaching the proper foundation. I took lessons for a year and a half, but after near 30 years of playing I should be a lot better than I am. I only took what I needed , and then taught myself . Should have stuck with the lessons. I was lucky to have a good ear before the internet. But I forgot how to read music as fast as I learned it.
Yeah, he’s got a good selection for all levels. Papastache is a good go to for Hendrix licks Groovy music lessons is another one that might be helpful for beginners
