Why do you keep saying that the Jets turned down better offers at the trade deadline last year? They did NOT. They never were offered two first round picks.
Why? Douglas made the best of a bad situation with a diva player. The draft picks are a separate issue. He got value that no one thought he could get. That's the trade. It should stay an A.
Graded it B. The value JD got was A+ worthy, but I don't know that trading away your best player can ever garner an A grade really. Unless you get known quantities in return perhaps.
Seahawks are in a division with the last 2 NFC champions, plus the Cardinals who IMO is the fastest rising YoY team with a better o-line, a more experienced Murray and now Hopkins. Seahawks may struggle to hit double digit wins the next few years. May even have losing records. Their D was in the bottom third in PYPG, RYPG, TYPG and PPG. They also most likely won't have Clowney back, and even though he wasn't a great pass rusher, he is an elite defender. Is the loss of Clowney and the upgrade from McDougald to Adams, an actual improvement to the defense? I'm not so sure those will be late first rounders.......
Edit: We also added a safety who is the #4 man coverage safety in the NFL, and the #5 defensive back when it comes to opposing QB's passer rating. He may not be the blitzer that Adams was, but he actually plays his position like it's supposed to be played.
I understand what you're trying to do. In your logic, your're claiming the Seahawks finish with a good record/playoffs. IMO doubtful with that tough division and a worse team, as losing Clowney but gaining an upgrade from McDougald to Adams is a net loss. Your logic has the best players coming out in the 2021 draft class. This would lead to a stacked 2022 draft class, which means that pick is a lot more valuable. Overall, any Covid impact is a wash since we received picks from them in back to back years. If we had 2021 and 2023 1st rounders, then it would hurt us. And I always found that the whole "less-value for later years" to be bullshit. If I was a GM, I'd trade 2nd and 3rd round picks for future 1st and 2nds whenever possible, and as long as my job was secure, it would lead to an eventual powerhouse team. This ain't Madden, and teams don't view that chart the same way fans do.
One thing that made this trade more palatable is the fact that JD drafts players that have passion and leadership skills, judging by his words and his deeds. I don't think the team will lack either of these characteristics after this trade.
They were offered a 1st and third at the trade deadline and at the draft wguch trade value chart is higher than the 2 firsts they received not even considering the uncertainties of the 2021 draft with many players likely to take an extra year.
I think it’s completely fair and responsible to “monitor” a player you might give a huge contract to. Bottom line is Jamal failed miserably and the Jets benefitted greatly. I don’t think Jamal alters either teams won loss record very much if at all. The Hawks will be contenders if Russ has another MVP like season and will struggle to make the playoffs if he doesn’t and Jamal doesn’t change that. Same with the Jets who will start to gain respectability if the OL improves and therefore Darnold starts to reach his immense potential. Jets still need to get more horses around Darnold to reach true contender status but this helps immensely on that front. Boys we are one injury to Russ Wilson behind a horrible OL to getting to root against Geno Smith all year.
well our current GM, who is widely respected around the league, has only had 1 draft. Any previous drafting is irrelevant. And based on him trading back in the 2nd and still landing Mims, I think he knows what he's doing.
I would've given it an A+ if the choice was there. Now, as I said in the other Adams thread, all Douglas needs to do is package what he got from Seattle with Darnold and get Mahomes from KC, and history will be corrected. Kidding aside, this is the kind of deal that a really smart and savvy GM makes. It makes me wonder what kind of leverage JD has to be able to get this return when on the surface other GMs were holding all the cards because of Adams' selfishness. We finally have a GM that knows what he's doing.
I'm glad some people get it and don't fall for the same ol' narrative that the Jets are a clueless organization from top to bottom instead of actually looking at the facts on the ground as they are TODAY. This was a masterful job by Joe D. No one anywhere had the Jets getting this kind of haul for JA. But, it doesn't fit the narrative. They can't accept the Jets might finally be showing competence at the GM spot, so we need to hear about how terrible they are at drafting in their history. Yes, they've earned that criticism in the past, but this is a brand new regime, folks. JD has only been here one year, and from all accounts, he hit it out of the park in his first draft. He definitely hit it out of the park in this trade, and again, he has no connection to the incompetence that was exhibited here in the past. I do find it hilarious that we need to hear about the Jets terrible drafting in the past from a lot of the same people who were killing them relentlessly over letting Mike Maccagnan go last year. I mean seriously...which one is it? People just love to make blanket statements to fit the narrative without actually looking at the facts.
Why shouldn't it garner an A when your best player is acting like an immature brat and won't listen to reason? That's what makes this trade all the more remarkable. Nobody thought the Jets would get anything much in return for Adams, and Douglas got a haul. IMO to give it a B says that Douglas could have done something to prevent this. Sometimes there's nothing one can say or do to change a situation. It is what it is, and all one can do is try to make the best of it. Players don't get to dictate when they get a new contract or how much of a raise they want, especially when they try to force it via the media. I'm not sure that Ozzie or Ron Wolf could have done any better in the same situation.
The trade value chart doesn't mean anything. Not every team uses that chart. Some use a different one or don't use one at all. IMO it doesn't matter what was offered at the trade deadline, because by every indication we have, Douglas thought they could work things out with Adams and keep him at that point. Also, when a player acts petulantly, you don't immediately cave and give him what he wants. That would have been setting a horrible precedent, and would have made it bad even if Dallas' #1 and #3 are worth more points than Seattle's two #1s, #3 and the Jets giving up #4. Also, don't forget that the Jets get a quality starting S in return who is very flexible. That completely blows what Dallas offered out of the water.
Why do you guys keep saying crap like this? What happened in the past is the past. That wasn't Douglas conducting those drafts. By all indications, he had a great draft this year.
Really can't give the trade a "real" grade until 2-3 years after the Jets use the draft picks and the players actually play.
I disagree. The trade is the trade. Deal finished. What Douglas does with the draft picks is a totally separate matter.
