Problem is if he’s at that point, and he’s still better than anyone else you have, hard to do anything about it.
One of these two joints will make you believe what you said the other will just be a pleasant distraction. I joke, I hope they do, I really really do
Look who their QB was. I'm trusting Douglas. He didn't like Robbie Anderson for some reason be salary demands or freak season. Maybe Doctson can have that type of success here.
He’s a guy that in college could win contested balls, occassionally get over the top but also was pretty good as a ball carrier in short area receiving situations.Just a superior athlete. He never did much as a route runner nor was he asked & that portion of his eval was a projection. Some guys just never develop that part of their game, even if they put it in the all the work & it usually holds them back at the NFL level. He’s still young enough to figure it out.Sometimes it’s a certain coach where finally the light goes on.Shawn Jefferson is considered very good at what he does.Maybe this can be his spot.Just not something we can or should count on.
See, I've never understood that. If a WR is a good athlete and he works at route running, I have a hard time understanding why they can't do it. It's not rocket science. It's a set of patterns to run. One learns those, then makes sure one isn't rounding the routes off or tipping off where he's going. One learns how to beat the press at the LOS. One learns how to vary his speed on his routes, going into and coming out of his breaks, and how to set up DBs. One works on fakes and dekes. Surely they had to learn some of that stuff in high school and college, so it should just be adding to and refining, not starting from scratch.
Went and searched "Doctson" in my post history to see how much I was fawning over him during that draft because I knew I really liked him... this thread came up... boy are there some GEMS including the comparison to Calvin Johnson from yours truly when I had him confused with god only knows who. Treadwell, Coleman, Doctson... man that class was a flop. https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/jets-possibly-targeting-wr-1st-round.86701/#post-3443942
Kudos to you for pointing out your own mistake!!!! I just quickly scanned that thread and all the talk was very positive about all three of those WRs. The only negatives were about Fuller. I forget what was going on that year, but hadn't looked at any of those WRs. I forget who in that thread liked Pharoh Cooper, but he's had about as good a career as any of those others, and has been a Pro Bowl Return Specialist.
Hey, you gotta laugh at yourself if you wanna laugh at others. For the life of me I can't figure out who I was thinking of when I said Doctson had the size of Calvin Johnson. I really liked Doctson so I was clearly well aware he was several inches shorter.
In my defense, in the 2016 draft thread I was calling for Dalvin Cook in the second round before the draft even started. And I wanted Doctson over Darron Lee.
Kirk Cousins in 2017 Alex Smith for 10 games in 2018. Not sure where you are going with that. QB has nothing to do with a WR being able to run routes, juke out defenders, and out run them.
Its a nice lotto ticket to potentially land a good receiver, but I have 0 expectation that he makes the opening day roster. You have definite locks to make the roster: Crowder, Mims, Perriman. Those that are trending to make the roster: Berrios and Smith. Then I think Doctson will be fighting with Cager and Campell for a 6th or 7th spot should we carry that many receivers. Thats assuming we dont sign back Demarius Thomas or someone else before the season starts.
In college, he ran some pretty good route at TCU and juked alot of people. Sometimes it comes down to coaching. Look what Gase got out of Robbie Anderson
Normally, I'd just talk shit on the conference, but the Big 12 isn't actually some shit tier conference. So odds are the DBs he went up against weren't bad. But how many DB's he went up against were good enough to actually play in the NFL? It's tough scouting. No way of knowing if his ability to juke out non-NFL caliber DBs will translate to success against literally the best of the best in the NFL.
On a side note, with pre-season being cut in half, it's going to be hard for JD to properly evaluate these kids plus get the regs ready to go. We may have to cut future super stars we just didn't have time to evaluate. If this covid shit had hit in 16, robbie anderson doesn't make the team. stuff like that. ittl be int for sure
Interesting read on Vyncint Smith https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/07/02/jets-receiver-vyncint-smith-predicts-a-big-year/ The Jets still are talking to free agent receiver Demaryius Thomas. But if Vyncint Smith does what he says he’s going to do, the Jets could be set at the position. Smith, who has run as fast as 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, has worked hard on his route running this offseason while training in Houston with NFL and NBA trainer Justin Allen. “I watch the other receivers like [Packers receiver] Davante Adams,” Smith said. “He’s not the fastest receiver, but he knows how to control everything to make the defensive back go where he wants him to go to get open. I’m excited with everything that’s going on and trying to stay focused and get ready for the season. It’s going to be a big year.” The Jets signed Smith off the Texans’ practice squad last September, and he caught 17 passes for 225 yards in 13 games with four starts. He also scored a 19-yard end around against the Eagles. “I’m very impressed with Vyncint’s improvement,” Allen said. “He’s another guy who’s locked in and has made great strides. From January to now, he’s a completely different player and a completely different athlete.” Smith caught five passes for 91 yards and one touchdown in seven games with the Texans in 2018. It would be nice if this were true and Smith made HUGE strides forward, but I'll believe it when I see it. Of course, it's in Allen's favor for him to say that Smith is greatly improved. That could help him get additional clients. It would be great if Smith did turn into a quality #3 WR at the very least. With his size (6'3) and speed (4.38) , he would be another big target for Sam, and the Jets could put 3 WRs on the field with sub-4.4 speed. That could keep up DCs all night trying to figure a way to stop them.
