NY Jets: Vyncint Smith could be set for a breakout season

NY Jets wide receiver Vyncint Smith has the potential to become a breakout player in 2020.
The NY Jets‘ current wide receiving corps was recently ranked 28th in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus preseason rankings. The wide receiver position is arguably the weakest unit on the team and is one of the biggest question marks going into the 2020 season.

Even after drafting Denzel Mims with the 59th pick in the draft and signing Breshad Perriman in the offseason, the Jets receiving corps is still a big concern.

Other than Jamison Crowder, the Jets have a lot of depth at wide receiver but a lot of the receivers on the depth chart are unproven commodities.

With a lot of uncertainty, this is the time for some of the wideouts who are low on the depth chart and are trying to make the 55-man roster to step up and earn their spot.

Third-year wide receiver Vyncint Smith is one of those guys trying to make a name for himself in the NFL. The Jets signed the German-born wideout off the Houston Texans’ practice squad last September and he would appear in 13 games for the team in 2019.

The NY Jets got a glimpse of what Vyncint Smith was capable of last season.
In those 13 games, Smith had 17 receptions for a total of 225 yards and a rushing touchdown that he scored in his debut game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith has a lot of potential and has the speed and athleticism to be a big-play wide receiver in the NFL.

In Weeks 12 through 17, Smith caught 13 of his 20 targets for 190 yards and nine first downs. Smith was on the field for 71 percent of Sam Darnold‘s 138 dropbacks from Weeks 14 to 17.

Head coach Adam Gase utilized the former undrafted wideout out of Limestone College a lot more in the closing weeks of last season, primarily because of injuries at the position, as fans got an extended look at what Smith was made of.

Smith showed off his speed and athletism last season when he broke off a 37-yard reception against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 and averaged 17.3 yards per game in the 2019 season.

If he can continue to be productive for the Jets offense in 2020, Smith has a chance to be a solid third or fourth option for Sam Darnold in the offense.

With a lot of uncertainty pertaining to the Jets’ wide receiving corps, a diamond in the rough like Vyncint Smith can be a reliable contributor for Darnold and the Jets this season

Why the hell not, he deserves a chance for a bigger slice of the cake and as @KurtTheJetsFan will tell you we are not stacked at WR so the field is wide open from the off for any of these guys to step up and deliver if they can.

Let's hope so, OL looking better on paper can only help Sam find the WR's more consistently.

Meh. Not impressed with this guy at all. I remember more of his mistakes (missed uncontested catch deflected for INT, giving up on a route that would have been a deep TD) than his big plays from last year. But you can't teach speed and he's got it, plus it's not like we're stacked at WR so I'm fine having him around to work with and potentially turn into deep specialist.

I don't see it happening, but would love to be proven wrong. Addressing WR has to be a high priority next offseason.

  6. Breaking out in terms of being a decent #4 situational/depth guy?Its possible.

The bottom portion of the WR corps is decent w good competition. But a dynamic presence is sorely needed in the starting line up.This is nothing new. Maybe Mims becomes that but its silly to count on that type of production early.

Beyond that their are no long term pieces other than Crowder & Mims. This needs to be a major focal point next offseason along w edge. However i think we’re alittle better there than we are at WR..Williams will find ways to dial up pressure

Williams made it work last year, but how much of that was because we played a cupcake schedule?

    Only time will tell.

He might have a breakout season, but I doubt he’ll put up better numbers in preseason than David Clowney

Does anyone remember that dude Kevin Swayne? I wouldn't mind if Smith turned into a serviceable guy like that. He wasn't a world-beater, but he wasn't exactly a journeyman, either. He was extremely hungry and had an incredible work ethic. That guy worked so hard and wanted to play so bad and it showed. Plus, I think he played 50 games straight and worked three jobs on top of it or something crazy ike that, lol.

I can see him good for 3 receptions a game. That would be 48 on the season, which isn't bad for a #3-4 WR.

If we can get that production for a full 16 games, I would consider that a breakout season. I especially like the 13 receptions for 9 first downs. Thats almost Chrebet type numbers.:D

    I’ll go under.

barring injuries he won’t see 3 targets a game.

I'd love if at some point we could get a possession receiver that isn't just a quick guy that Gase can call a pass behind the LOS for. Mims has the tools but needs development. Perriman maybe can be. But right now our WR room is just a group of guys that are going to be relied on to make plays with either the ball in their hands and (hopefully) blockers in front of them or 60 yards down the field.

I guess there's always Josh Doctson...

  19. Just what the doctor ordered should he enter the supplemental draft. That WR room has a whole different feel adding a guy like him. Suddenly Sam has 3 long term pieces in Mims,Crowder & Stevenson

Holy crap! I knew he'd be a great player if you like him, but when he turns on the Jets, it's amazing. Defenders are gaining on him or have the angle, and he turns on the Jets and suddenly they no longer have the angle or they are falling way behind. I wonder what his 40 time is. Is he faster than Ruggs? He also has returned punts and kicks a little and returned 2 kickoffs for TDs. Over his last two seasons he had 127 receptions for 1,926 yards, 18 TDs, and a 15.5 ypc average.

I saw an article stating that he was going to return for his senior season. Has he definitely entered the supplemental draft? His character and work ethic seem to be excellent, as I found the following article. I'd love to add this kid, but don't think that Douglas will use a draft pick in the supplemental draft, but could (hopefully) be wrong.

Prospect Profile: Marquez Stevenson is Just Flying By

    11 months ago Nick Farabaugh

Houston wide receiver Marquez Stevenson has gone through adversity like no other. However, with his work and perseverance, he’s just flying by.
    • It’s all deja vu.

First, it was a broken collarbone in preseason camp that would sideline him for an entire summer. Then a slew of injuries that knocked him out for the rest of his freshman year after only playing two games.

But, he worked back and was ready the next spring. He was back better than ever to break out onto the scene as a premier wide receiver in the NCAA.

Once again, just three practices into spring, he tore his ACL, ending his sophomore season before it even started.

That was exactly what happened to the Houston wide receiver. Stevenson is built to take adversity like this head-on. His mother taught him the grit and toughness that he’s needed to get through this type of adversity. His injuries were just another example of something he had to get through with perseverance. He was taught to hustle and to work for what he wanted. It was the lessons he was bred with growing up.

“The blows kept on coming, but I knew I had to work harder to come back better than I ever was before,” said Stevenson. “Those injuries don’t define me.I knew I couldn’t just lay down, I had to work to be better than I ever was after the injuries.”

Coming into his junior year, Stevenson would get the chance to start. However, he also got the chance to play alongside his best friend, roommate, and quarterback D’Eriq King. Ever since they both stepped onto campus in 2016, they were seemingly attached at the hip.

“We would work every day after practice together, to get better and help each other grow,” Stevenson said. “D’Eriq is a great player and there is no one else I would rather have as my quarterback.”

That duo of Stevenson and King would light the entire nation on fire in 2018. King registered 50 total touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury. Stevenson’s injuries did not stop him from breaking out in his junior campaign either. The wide receiver hauled in 75 catches for over 1000 yards and nine touchdowns in his first full, healthy season.

He made it back and stamped his name on the national map. His growth as a wide receiver was evident, even after a torn ACL. He did what he said, and came back better than ever.

How did he do that? “Relentlessness,” Stevenson said. It was his mindset and thought process the entire time he was training to get back on the field. His entire comeback focus was to improve every single aspect of his game in preparation to light the college football world on fire.

With Stevenson being known for his elite speed, it might be a bit surprising to find out just what he thinks the most important attribute is for an elite WR — blocking. While surprising, it made sense after he explained it.

“Blocking is where you breed physicality,” Stevenson said. “All the elite guys know how to be physical, so why shouldn’t I want to do the same? Physicality is something I want to be known for when you see my name.”

If one thing is clear, Stevenson is focusing on adding to his already dynamic game. He doesn’t just want to be a deep threat; he wants to be a multipurpose wide receiver that can beat any cornerback on any given day.

With all the adversity he has gone through, Stevenson’s journey is now pointing towards the NFL and his senior season. He is taking it the same way he has with everything else — relentlessness, hustle, and hard work. Because that’s what he wants to do — become an NFL star.

Everyday, Stevenson works on his route running and at the end of every practice, he runs his favorite route — a go route. You might see him, but Marquez Stevenson is flying right on by.
