Today was planned for awhile - just a housekeeping move. Q will never play again unfortunately. Way too much of a risk - can’t blame him.
As I get older and my sports-following resume gets longer, I believe more and more in the importance of “culture” and “locker room” and “intangibles”.
I wonder if management feels Bell wasn’t giving his all. It wouldn’t be a crazy thing, considering the Bell signing wasn’t strongly endorsed by Gase. Could see Bell being less-than-enthusiastic as well.
It is interesting they chose to bring a "Gase" guy into the locker room who just happens to play the same position as Bell. That said, Bell said all of the right things to the media and in social media last year. Honestly, from the outside, he seemed like a consummate player.
I felt exactly the same way. With every opportunity in the world to say something wrong or do something wrong in a tough season, everything I saw pointed to him being a good locker room guy and pro.
What was your personal take away from the call? Did Douglas fill you with confidence that we finally have a guy who can lead the organisation. I know it's a call with fans so he is going to be somewhat coy but did he inspire confidence?
Well it’s interesting you ask. I met Mike Maccagnan at the Syracuse vs Notre Dame game at MetLife. I talked with him for like 15 minutes about the Jets. He’s a super nice guy. Super nice. Maybe being super nice is what did him in. Maybe he didn’t have the killer instinct or decisiveness to get the job done. While I haven’t personally interacted with Joe Douglas, he exudes confidence and decisiveness. He’s stated his plan and he’s executing his plan. Joe Douglas may actually be our savior. I’m dead serious.
Thanks for the information, it has actually invigorated me as a Jet fan to hear what JDs blueprint is and how he is actually carrying it out. On a side note, I can’t help but to imagine you and Mac holding Starbuck coffees talking Jets football.
I've heard on TOJ podcasts that Maccagnan wasn't a people person. Being a GM requires constant interaction with the scouts, coaching staff, analytics department, and being connected across the league. It was reported that he was indecisive when it came to trading down last year.
Wow seriously good stuff GQMartin Most of the questions I'd have asked have been answered You kept up superbly as well good man
I do want to clarify. I don't think Bell was jaking it or anything. He always said the right thing and behaved liked a pro. I was more suggesting it might have been an unconscious thing. Confidence and the mental part being so important. I just wonder if his head was 100% into it. If not, we all know the body will follow.
