Do you think if he improves the same from year 2 to 3 as he did from 1 to 2 he deserves a Goff like type contract?

    Contract‎: ‎4 yr(s) / $134,000,000
    Guaranteed at Signing‎: ‎$57,042,682
    Average Salary‎: ‎$33,500,000

Unfortunately 'deserve' has nothing to do with it.

Sam's agent will push for Sam to become the highest paid QB. Joe can push back and threaten to tag him, but beyond that one card Sam has all the leverage.

Joe would tell Sam to go take a hike if he went to him trying to be the highest paid QB if has the same improvement from year 2 to 3 as year 1 to 2. His 2nd contract at age 26/27 is the one where he can make that argument (assuming he keeps progressing).

Got ya. I assumed Sam's next raise WOULD be his 2nd contract, but maybe just an extension leading up to his 2nd? Good thought. I like that better than having to pay him huge jack so early on.

yeah for sure. That's why this brings such a big smile to my face when typing this. He won't be getting that 2nd deal until 26-27 years old. He was only 21 his rookie year.

Darnold is going to get his second contract at 24 or so. He'll be on his 3rd by 28 or 29. He's younger than most of the QB's drafted this year. He's like 9 months older than Tua Tagman and 7 months younger than Joe Burrow.

He really is not on the clock this year because he's still one of the best young prospects at QB in the NFL, a full 2 years after he was drafted.

Just as an example of how young he is: he will be 23 when he starts the Jets first game this year. John Elway was 23 when he started his first game for the Broncos in 1983.

Bad wording on my part. I should have said his second contract extension or third contract. Sorry for the confusion @Footballgod214

Really this thread should be locked. Concerns about future payments to a 2 year QB that literally played behind the worst OL in football , not to mention mediocre receivers that played in and out all season with various injuries - not too mention having mono - worried about his money situation - a concern for a position that has to be the most detrimental and impactful in just about any sport? Moderator please , please lock this.

With all the personnel changes, can we at least wait till the 2020 season is behind us? Just inane...

Only 17 of 32 pulled that feat off last year. 18 the prior year. 17 in 2017.
It appears to be a tougher accomplishment than some think

Exactly. The Jets and Sam have 2 years to figure this out. His play and the teams development will bring clarity or it won't.

    It’s a forum.
Where fans can talk about the Jets and the teams past, present, and future.
You don’t have to come back to this thread if you don’t like :)

That's fine. Players drafted in the 1st round have to wait 3 full season to re-do their rookie deal. 2020 is Sam's 3rd year, which means he'll no doubt be looking for more jack soon.

That being said, I think I see moves JD is making right now looking ahead to Sam's redo. Those moves are pertinent to today's conversations, at least a bit. Like all the 1 yr deals, drafting Davis to possible avoid paying Maye, letting Robbie walk over a few mil, that kinda stuff.

Sams upcoming redo is shaping a LOT of what JD is doing right now. I think.

You're talking an attrition rate of almost 50%...

Yea, I was surprised it was that high considering the rules on hitting a qb nowadays.
So I take that stat and then look at the context in which Sam has missed games and I don’t worry about his health too much. He can’t get mono again, though I guess corona is a real possibility. And by many accounts, the first year was an injury at a convenient time that he would have played through if things were going well.

One thing also to note is that Sam had to re-learn an entirely new offensive system in his 2nd year. That also has to account for his erratic play and ineptitude. I'm not saying that this is his make-or-break year either. The OL will need time to gel so lets not all get into a big huff if we see a few missing spark plugs in the rebuilt engine, so to speak. Hard to say at what point this will all come together - health/injuries aside , maybe very immediate.

Sam's supporting cast is still a work in progress as the OL needs time to gel as a unit and the skill position players like Mims need to become more well rounded. Unfortunate, but that's the reality of the situation he is in. The good news is he's only 22(soon to be 23) and we have a GM who has addressed the offensive deficiencies, albeit not to the extent some here wanted. Let's see how he does this year.
