In honor of draft season, I wanted to create a fun poll! Here is the question: Which one of these drafted Jets would you re-select with our first round pick in this years draft? For convenience, I'm only using 1st round players drafted since 2000 and are not with the team anymore. I'm also assuming they are all available with this years pick! You can also say "other" and select someone coming out this year or a non mention Enjoy =)
Easy one for me. While these are all good to great players, a 22 year Brick would protect Sam's blindside for the next 10 years.
I agree, it was between Nick and Brick for me. But I went with the franchise LT because of how solid and durable he was for us. If we add a Brick to our line now--we would really be setting Sam up well. Especially how he was in pass pro
I picked Brick, but then I want to package our 2nd with one of the 3's this year, or a 2 next year, to trade back into the 1st to pick Mangold at #29 overall.
I said someone from this draft. If I took one of those former Jets, it would be Brick, but I want someone better. Brick was a very good pass blocker, but only a so-so run blocker, if that. I want an LT that can do both. Santana Moss is the only other that makes sense to me, and that I'd consider, because our first pick needs to be used on either an LT or WR, not a 3-4 DE or OLB, or CB, or C, or QB, or ILB. Also, players are bigger and faster now. While Brick was a very good pass blocker in his day, he might not be nearly as good now.
The guy I'd really like to bring back is an alternate-universe Pennington who isn't made of glass. Before he got hurt, he was on his way to being an elite QB. In this universe though, I'd go with Brick.
Oh man! Love it. I remember being over the moon when we picked both of them in the 1st round. Mangini wanted to build the right way...I'll give him that. I went to their first game against the Titans...met them in the Marriott lobby in Nashville.
Agreed! One of my favorites. I almost made the poll all our draft picks, but it would have been too many options lol
Answer is Brick, without a doubt. Franchise LT for the next 10 years would be extremely beneficial to Sam’s life.
Great hypothetical question! I voted Mangold, because even though we really need a left tackle right now, I think Mangold was a true great at his position and would anchor our line for a decade. He was also one of my all-time favourite Jets. But I wouldn't hate it if we could magically get Brick back, either...
D'Brick, but not the 22 yrs old version. Coming out I think he weighed 130 pounds soaking wet!! It took him a good 3 years to bulk up. I'll throw in our 2nd round to draft a 25 yr old, 310 pound d'brick!
This idea that Pennington lost velocity after getting hurt is incorrect. Curtis Martin said during the 2002 season that they used to watch Pennington in practice before he became a starter and they thought there was no way he could play QB at the NFL level with his arm strength. Pennington deserves all the admiration and praise for his accomplishments but what hurt him the most was getting exposed in the Oakland playoff game. He simply did not have the arm strength to beat press coverage. You take away and contest his short routes and he has nowhere to go and never had the arm strength to fit balls in tight windows.
