    1) Assuming NYJ finishes 10-6. We need:

2 of these 3 things need to happen:

    a) Cincy to lose 2 of the next 3 (@IND, @DEN, PIT)
    b) JAX to lose 1 of the next 2 (NE, @KC)
    c) DEN to lose 1 of the next 2 (CIN, SF)

This makes Cincy's game tonight huge for the Colts to win. If so, then CIN/DEN, one has to lose getting one of those scenarios out the window. JAX won't beat NE when NE can clinch their division... No way.. NE has something to play for...

    2) Assuming the NYJ finishes 9-7. 3 of the 4 would have to happen.

    a) BUF to lose 1 of the next 2 (TEN, @BAL) or have our loss be against OAK. (If we lose to MIA, we lose the division tiebreaker to BUF. We'd be tied in the division, common opponents are next. We'd be tied there too, but have 6 losses in the conference to their 5).

    b) CIN lose out

    c) DEN lose 2 OR Lose 1 and have KC win out (KC would eliminate DEN in the division tiebreaker if they won out)

    d) JAX lose out

We'd beat KC in any tiebreaker, hence they would not matter. If DEN/KC tied in their division, if KC wins out, they win the tiebreaker 4-2 to 3-3 division record.

NOW It's also possible we can get in with 2 of the 4 things happening, We'd need to get in a 3 way tie for 5th place with ANY Team + KC + US. We'd take 6th there. For instance, JAX can lose 1, CINCY lose out, DEN lose 1 with KC winning out would leave JAX/NYJ/KC tied for 2 spots. JAX takes 5th by conf record. NYJ takes 6th by conf record. Same is true with CIN/NYJ/KC (CIN 5th, NYJ 6th) or DEN/KC/NYJ (NYJ 5th, KC 6th).

I hope I laid it all out now. There may be some other nutty possibilities but this lays it out pretty well

This is why you're most knowledgable. Either that or have too much time on your hands! Thanks.

Wow, two games away from finishing the season and even Buffalo has a possibility of coming in and wrecking things for us. It is going to be a crazy season right up to the end. Hopefully we can win out and help take care of our own business.

If NE loses both road games and we win both of our games would we win the division, be the 4 seed and host NE in the first round?

That would depend on if NE won the #5 seed. I don't know if that's guaranteed at 10-6...

    Good breakdown, 2004... thanks.

We need to win out if for no other reason than the experience. If we make the playoffs it's the icing on the cake.

What people are not talking about is... We are kinda in a win win situation with that JAX/Indy game next week.. no matter what happens, we are in a good spot..

Lets say NE loses to JAX, it is very very possible that Tenn could win at home vs the pats, and we win the division

If JAX loses, that will be the 2nd loss that we needed them to lose, we will be golden for the WC... and with Cutler at the helm in Denver, I dont see them winning vs cincy..

all the teams we need to lose are beating up on eachother in the final few weeks, and all we need to do is take care of business..

Just last week I was reading how "impossible" it was for us to make it, I knew our chances were better than most if we were 10-6.

It's possible. If NE goes 10-6, and we're 10-6 we'd be tied h2h, and tied division record. Next breaker is common games, we'd also be tied (teams play 12 teams exactly the same, 2 games against one another, and 2 games not the same. Both of us are 1-1 in those games if we finish 10-6.) Ok, so now it's conference record. We'd be 7-5, them 6-6 (assuming they lose 2), and we'd take the division.

Now onto the 5th/6th seed. NE would have 6 losses in conference, a loss to Denver, a win over Cincy, and a loss to JAX. That would make things fairly tough on them. They could MISS the playoffs, or a bunch of other combos could happen.

Good post. I would also like to add that if the Jets win next week it is impossible for them to be eliminated from playoff contention before week 17.

Damned shame we didn't take care of business last weekend (Buffalo). That would've made the scenarios a lot more interesting.

The really crazy thing is, the Giants are only 7-7 and have a better mathematical chance than we do because of the NFC weaknesses!

Yes. The other matchups look like they could fall into place, providing we take care of our own business.

It's really sad. With all this, the Giants still control their own destiny.

Just talking about making the playoffs is unbeleiveable. A rebuilding year and expecting to go 4-12. I can't wait to see what the future has for us.

Sick, no? The Star Ledger this morning pointed out that if the season was over right now, the Giants would be in and the Jets would be out!

And then Jeremy Shockey gets interviewed in front of his locker and sits there saying, "We're still a 'playoff team,' there's no question about that." What? This has been the problem with their season all along. They figured they had to automatically be playoff-bound from Week One. Now you're 7-7 and still think you're playoff bound. These guys are so full of themselves it's pathetic.

Hold on man... I wouldn't be so quick to rule out Vince Young not winning that one! That kid is walking on water right now.
