https://www.newyorkjets.com/news/je...aNIT8Arq8Bj60xgn48uM3UL2lMa15xYiKDYWjM2JylJm8 The Jets have released DB Darryl Roberts. Roberts started in 10 of the 13 games he appeared in this past season and registered 62 tackles, 6 pass defenses and 1 interception. This past season, Roberts was one of eight different players who started at cornerback and he also played some safety when Jamal Adams missed action in Weeks 14-15. In addition to logging 713 defensive snaps, Roberts also participated in 143 plays on special teams and finished with 3 stops. A seventh-round pick of the Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft, Roberts was waived and the 6'0", 182-pounder was claimed by New York's AFC representative on September 4, 2016. The sixth-year veteran has totaled 172 tackles, 27 PD and 3 INT in 56 games (26 starts).
Bonus: Pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly weighing an offer from the NY Jets in free agency. Here are all the details and what it all means. The NY Jets have experienced an overall quiet free agency period highlighted by some under the radar signings. Late this week Gang Green has decided to change their tactics and opt for more of a splash. On Thursday the team had inquired about Jacksonville Jaguars pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue. Now we have learned the team has also made a contract offer to free-agent sack specialist Jadeveon Clowney, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks. “The three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher has been weighing offers from multiple teams, believed to include the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, in addition to the Seahawks,” per Gregg Bell of The News Tribune. When Clowney entered free agency he had hopes of landing a big-time contract that paid him north of $20 million annually on a long-term deal. Obviously a few days into free agency, he hasn’t received the offers he was hoping for. Per Bell’s reporting, Jadeveon’s troubling medical history has given teams pause. In his six NFL seasons, he has only started an entire 16 game season once. Last season with the Seahawks, Clowney was forced to miss three of the final five regular-season games due to a sports hernia. With the current climate in the NFL due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, teams are forbidden from bringing players into their facilities. This has thrown a wrench into the free-agent process because several teams would like to let their doctors take a closer look at Jadeveon Clowney before handing him a fat new contract on the open market. One of the Jets’ biggest needs is at edge rusher. Clowney is a dynamic talent but he is by no means a perfect prospect. He has yet to record a double-digit sack season which is the bare metric used to rank and evaluate the best pass rushers in the NFL. While he’s elite at stopping the run, no one pays top dollar for that attribute. If the report is accurate, that the Jets are one of three teams that have offered Clowney a contract, it wouldn’t be very Joe Douglas like. In the first several days of the legal tampering period and free agency, Douglas has opted for value and substance over splash and style points. There’s no doubt that Jadeveon would be an upgrade for the Jets, but it’ll likely come at an exorbitant price. https://thejetpress.com/2020/03/20/ny-jets-jadeveon-clowney-weighing-offer-gang-green-free-agency/
The most positive thing I take from this is that obviously Douglas recognizes that pass rusher is a big need, and he's trying to fill it before the draft which is a little thin on pass rushers I believe. As for Clowney, I don't know. For the money they're probably going to have to pay him and for the value in return, I think I'd pass. If there was a way to predict that he'll stay healthy and finally reach that double digit sack level, I'd be more inclined to go after him, but there's no way to know the future, only the past, and his past doesn't add up to the money he's looking for IMO. On the flip side, he wouldn't cost any draft picks or players so maybe if the money is sort of reasonable it makes sense. I'd prefer Ngakoue if he could be had without giving up too much premium draft capital. Maybe offer them Q. Williams and one of the 3rds this year? This is why they're paying JD the big bucks.
Speaking of a Roberts. Whatever happened to our Andre Roberts who skipped town for Buffalo? Just checked and noticed he had a pretty big decline as a 1st year Bill and nothing compared to his fluke season of 2018 as a Jet. 13 games. 3 receptions. 20 receiving yards. 0 TD's. 1 rushing attempt. 7 yards 0 TD's. Only 28 punt returns for 223 yards last year and 0 PR TD's. An average of only 8.0 yppr. Down from the year before with NYJ of 14.1 (-6.1 differential) and 0 PR TD's for Buffalo (1 PR TD the year before as a Jet). Long of 22 with Buffalo after a long of 78 the year before with NYJ. Goes from 40 Kickoff Returns with the Jets of 2018 to only 25 KR's last year with Buffalo. From 1,174 KR yards as a Jet 2018 to only 664 KR yards as a Bill. 1 KR TD 2018 for Jets to 0 KR TD's 2019 for Buffalo. A 99 yard long KR of 2018 with NYJ to a 64 yards as a KR long for Buffalo. I guess he still made the pro bowl as an alternate but nothing compared to his performance just the year before. I'm pretty sure that this Roberts, in Darryl Roberts, just like Andre Roberts; won't be missed @ all either. Nice to save JD save us $6M on the cap @ the same time just by releasing him with no dead money too.
At one point I really thought he could be something. Then he was terrible, and that game that he had to play safety was one of the worst all-around football performances I’ve ever seen in my life. See ya.
I think the move to safety which was out of necessity due to injuries, ruined him here. I thought he was a decent corner...but he was dreadful as a FS.
I'd do that deal in a NY minute. I never wanted Q. Williams anyway. We should have had Josh Allen in last year's draft. Damn you, McGAGnan
JD probably knows that Clowney is not worth near the money that Clowney wants. Unlike GMs of yesteryear, Douglas is probably not going to overpay for him even though he may want Clowney at the right price. Nobody else really wants Clowney at the price he wants either though, that works in the Jets' favor. As for the draft, Mac blew it last year. It was one of the best years for edge rushers in a long time. But even though every one of them except Bosa was available at #3, Q. Williams was, like all the other DTs the Jets have drafted over the past decade, the "best player in the draft" and "too good to pass up". This year, the only real elite edge rusher is Chase Young. That said, you never know. A lot of current and future Hall of Famers were written off as mediocre-at-best prospects in draft. There's a few that I think could be diamonds in the rough, but nobody I would reach for.
My favorite Daryl Roberts clip was this year. When he gave up a 40 yard pass interference against the Dolphins. Then stopped a two yard slant on a bad throw in the red zone and beat his chest like he just Malcom Butler'd the Super Bowl. He was solid for us a couple years ago. No idea what happened this year.
The Darryl Roberts contract was one of the best contracts Mac ever gave out .... think about that for a second...
David Barrett used to do that shit. The guy would finger wag after a decent play and then get torched a play later. The away game in mid-December in Spittsburgh specifically comes to mind. Pre-Christmas pain. EDIT: 2004
