I think everyone's way overrating Poteat, by the way. He's pretty good in coverage, very good tackler, but the guy is ridiculously slow. There's a reason this is his 83rd team. He needs deep safety help on every play.

I think Miller plays with emotion and instincts. He has improved this yr and with our new coaching staff he's only going to get better.

I'm glad I read this, because I was about to start a thread on Poteat. He looks great at corner. Confident, and covers really well. I am not nervous about deep passes to his side. i didn't see the Bills game, so I don't know if he got beat at all that week, but in green bay and now minnesota, I can say Poteat looks to be a strong db for us. Small but quick.

About Millers Personal foul incident today, I didn't see what happened, looked for a re-play but didn't get one. The anoucners were saying it was a bad call though.

The Vikes have no one fast, other than Williamson and he's awful in every regard. And I believe he was covering Billy McMullen (LOL) on each play.

I rarely agree with anything Dierdorf says, but he was correct when he noted that Miller's penalty "let the Vikings off the hook." We had them backed way up and then Miller gets flagged for the blow to the head.

He did run step for step with one of the Viking WRs today on that nice breakup he had in single coverage.

Fair enough. At least he didn't get torched today though. Dyson did.

lol i have seen quite a few stupid ones, he very often plays like he's a rookie in the mistakes that he makes when hes not returning the ball... i wonder how intelligent he is....

the thing is, Miller making bonehead decisions is something that can be corrected. speed, agility, raw athletic talent can't be taught.

i think one full (stable) Offseason working with Mangini will turn Miller into what we expect of him.

    cheers

Playing cornerback in the NFL is impossibly hard right now. It doesn't excuse penalties but Miller is young. Give him time - Mangini will have him playing very well in a year or two.

I've been very happy with the secondary this year. Barrett has been solid when healthy. Dyson is great. Coleman and Poteat are both pleasant surprises and are playing with a lot of heart.

Part of me says that if Miller doesn't already have the core skills, a summer with Mangini isn't going to bring him up to speed.

I for one am not happy with our CB corps this season. I don't see Barrett as the cure to all that ails our CB's, however Dyson has contributed fairly well. Coleman strikes me as a band-aid on a large wound, and I don't see him doing alot to help us in a starting or NB role. Poteat is the one guy who's play has impressed me as of late.

It goes without saying but I think we need to either sign a stellar FA CB or target someone in the first 3 rounds who could possibly start next year.

My sentiments exactly. As for Poteat, I've been really surprised by his tackling skills. Not the fastest guy around, but technically very sound....

The thing about Miller's 15-yard penalty yesterday that bothered me much more than the penalty itself was what seemed to be happening afterward on the sideline in the exchange between Mangini and Miller.

Miller was walking off the field and Mangini began saying something to him and he continued walking right past Mangini while being spoken to. Mangini had to change his direction and wound up basically talking to the back of Miller's head. Stupid, hot-headed move and somebody in the lockerroom needs to straighten his ass out.

"Playing with emotion" is one thing, but when you get a 15-yarder and the HC has something to tell you (even if it's a good, public ass-chewing), you stand there and take it like a man until he's finished. You don't have such little control of your "emotions" that you diss the HC. That's not "playing with emotion," that's playing with stupidity. There's a big difference. Do that in a critical playoff game and you've screwed your entire team out of a shot at the SB.

One thing Miller needs to understand real quick, for his own good: Mangini might as well have a sign on his door that says, "Prima-donna's need not apply." Take one look at the Giants for a good reference. They've selfishly penalized themselves out of most of their wins.

I somewhat agree with you. Dyson has turned out to be a great signing. Coleman and Miller are going to be good for depth. Poteat has been a real surprise to me as well. I think he is our #3 corner for the future. But I think Barrett's time is over, and he should be packing his bags for next year. So I think the FO will be targeting Clements or Samuel, or maybe drafting someone. I don't think the CBs are as bad as it seems at times. There is a glaring hole at the #2 position to play opposite of Dyson.

I am more worried about Safety, other than Rhodes, it is in serious need of help.

Just noticed after Kelly-bot posted its article, that Miller was yanked from the secondary by Mangini after his bonehead penalty.

It's good to see that Mangini won't put up with the bonehead play...

I hadn't noticed that, Koz. Thanks for mentioning it. I'm glad Mangini didn't let it slide:

"Miller's tough day: Jets cornerback Justin Miller had two kickoff returns for 45 yards, but he drew Mangini's wrath and was yanked from the secondary after being called for unnecessary roughness after giving Vikings running back Artose Pinner a blow to the head in the second quarter. Miller was also called for holding in the third quarter on a Jets' punt return."
