It’s done all the time. Nothing the jets can do about it now. Only way to protect against this is to get the other team to agree the conditions are attached to playing time the following season. Of course that has its risks too.
Yes they certainly should. I'll take solace in the fact the Giants got them some long term Leo and ya know it's for crazy money. I can't remember a player doing so little yet getting paid so much money, a player coming up so small in contract years and getting paid so much money. The dude had a nine games sackless stretch in 2018 he 'topped' that with a 15 games sackless stretch in 2019 the Giants had to wait until week 17 to get that 0.5 sack the Jets got no sacks out of him in 2019. These NFL people are very smart right? That's what I always hear.
If Douglas wasn't aware of this loophole and didn't cover his ass with terms in trade agreement that's kinda worrisome

Nah not at all. IMO The kicker is the 3. If that was the pick that got moved to a 4th if he didn’t resign opposed to the 4th being moved that would have been irritating.
Yeah I hope Joe Douglas learns from this mistake. Although we don't know if this was part of the deal that Gettleman wasnt going to give us a 3rd if we couldnt give them flexbility on the 2021 pick. Regardless, a 3rd and 5th is a steal for someone who didnt even do all that much for the Giants when he got a fresh start there. If we let Williams walk I believe the best we could get is a comp pick of 3rd but that is contingent on how many free agents we acquire. Since we need talent badly, I assume we will dip enough in free agency to negate the comp pick altogether.
Announcement date has fuck all to do with the contract terms in my opinion. Its the contract effective date. JD didn't make a mistake. He knew going in the contract date was going to be juggled by the Giants like all teams do. He would have never gotten anymore than that. The third was a gift from heaven. The fifth was a bonus. He got us two valuable picks for a marginal performer that was walking away after the season for nothing. Unfortunately we now firmly add Leo to the long list of DLs selected on the first round of absolute busts. What a cluster fuck drafting plan over the last ten years by the Jets. JD has done more without the benefit of a draft to make this team better. than his predecessors with multiple drafts. With the exception of Jamal, there isn't one super star that we can call an early round draft hit for us. Sorry for venting. God have we squandered glorious opportunities over the last ten years.
Getting a high 3rd and 5th for a FA that the Jets had no interest in resigning is nothing short of a miracle. This loophole doesn’t even come close to saving face for Gettleman.
There was no mistake. This isn’t the first time a team has done this. The 4th was in case leo all of a sudden exploded for a bunch of sacks, in that case the giants couldn’t risk letting him be a free agent if even for a day or two without some team outbidding them or driving up the price.
