You want me to list examples of teams letting wide receivers go in free agency? we could be here all day, it literally happens to every team like every year -- Philly let Jeremy Maclin walk in his prime, another inefficient speed receiver. Maclin actually put up way better numbers than Robby Anderson at the time though. 3 years later Maclin was out of the NFL and the Eagles were hoisting the Lombardi trophy
I wish there were better options. I'm not a big fan of Anderson but if he leaves we're essentially looking at turning over the entire receiving corps. He didn't play with Herndon (essentially) last season. Crowder and Vycint Smith will be the only receivers he's worked with if he leaves. There are much better options than RA. They just aren't available. I'd rather not try a 33 year old receiver out. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/wide-receiver/ Maybe we can get Breshad Perriman for cheaper? He revived his career when Godwin and Evans got hurt. Outside of Anderson and up on that list, there is very little production available.
They also had Zach Ertz, a healthy Jordan Matthews, but hey lets glorify a team that went 7-9 the next year. Is that what you want? Their QB was Mark Sanchez lol, not even close to the same scenario. It wasn't until they finally got weapons again that they started competing. I'll take what Robby has to offer right now, I don't see him retiring anytime soon.
well duh.... they could afford those other weapons because they didn't overpay an average wide receiver
Pretty much this. We are going to be held to ransom by a limited but capable WR2. Next year should probably actually be a rebuilding year (given the roster and schedule) rather than just something we say when the season goes south.
Are we ignoring the fact that Chip Kelly actively tried to get every non Chip Kelly guy off the team?
Hopefully Douglas learned something in all that time in Baltimore. Overpaying for a guy like Anderson is something they’d never do
Question about Sanders: why the hell would he leave the most likely NFC repeat champions for the Jets?
According to the link you gave RA's Market Value is about $12 million.yr. If he would sign four years for $48 million, structured so that he and his cap hit could be cut after 2 years, I'd bite the bullet. But I still think it's a mistake, worth the risk only because the lack of other good options. I wouldn't be upset if they let him walk, even for a contract like I suggested. How about Cobb? Not an "over the top" guy, but a solid, dependable receiver and according to his MV, would probably warrant a 2 year, $14 million ($7 million/yr) deal. Then look for a game breaker in the draft. I'd prefer this route.
and they didn't address the position until they got Alshon Jeffery years later. Then they started winning games, interesting. Regardless, this scenario you listed doesn't match Darnold and the Jets situation. Young QB, on the verge of booming or busting, questionable depth on the outside, crappy FA options. You'll need to dig more.
Perriman might be a sleeper. I still prefer Anderson. Also, I don't think Anderson is going to get super overpaid like Nagle and some are indicating. A very strong receiving draft pool can diminish FA value.
IDK why that scenario was even brought up, it wasn't a good one and was Sanchez still a young promising QB?
yes that’s exactly the point. They didn’t tie up their funds on an average wideout like Maclin. They could then afford to get an actual impact player like Jeffrey
I don’t think Anderson is going to get super overpaid either. I think he’s gonna be disappointed in the financial offers
Except the FA season happens before the draft, and no team knows for sure if they're going to get their guy in the draft. That's why FA's are often overpaid.
https://theeagleswire.usatoday.com/...remy-maclin-leaves-the-eagles-in-free-agency/ Might want to read up on this more. Seems like Maclin wanted to reunite with Reid, no one knows if he got an offer or not. Maclin still highly productive in 2015. Also, probably Chip Kelly effect. Find a better example?
