The whole Mahomes debate is revisionist history...he was not projected as a top 10 pick and KC and Andy Reid were criticized heavily for trading up and taking him....passing on Watson and taking Hackenburg were decisions that deserves to be criticized ....let's not also forget half this board wanted to take Paxton Lynch.
I just looked at a bunch of 2017 mock drafts to refresh my memory...everyone had him going in the 20s most at 25 to the Texans...this idea he was a top of the draft no-brainer that should have been taken at 6 is revisionist history.
Some didn't have him in the first round and bumped him up because he was pretty much the consensus #2 quarterback. He wasn't looked as a complete package as a day one starter at all. People can cite that they thought differently and more power to them and their top scouting abilities. The tape says it all though. Most were shocked. There's a reason that supposedly the Saints and other teams claim they were waiting on him. No one saw him going top 10.
People forget he sat a full year behind a solid veteran QB in Alex Smith, and is also playing for a Hall of Fame HC. That's not intended to marginalize anything Mahomes has accomplished, but he went into one of the best situations a raw QB could ever have. The pick at 6 should have been Watson, but Mac had a raging boner for Hackenberg.
Ok........sapp was 1995 and yes hampton was round 1. But none of those teams went nuts and picked DL in 3 consecutive years like the jets did.
Would all those citing Mahomes, Sapp, Brady and Rockne, et al as proper comparisons please link their pre-draft posts claiming the same.
Here's some: https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/pat-mahomes.87935/page-20#post-3567819 https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/is-velocity-really-the-gold-standard.88439/#post-3568476 I'll stop there. I think I supported my case that it isn't revisionist to say I thought Mahomes was the best QB and best pick in 2017. EDIT: In the interests of full disclosure, it was Legler who tipped me off to Mahomes.
congratulations you liked Mahomes....doesn't change the fact no one in the league viewed him as a top 10 pick worthy of using the 6th pick for so I'm not gonna kill the Jets over it when 31 other teams wouldn't have either.
The Saints allegedly were prepared to take him at 11. So I guess that means that your take is false right? At least the Chiefs and Saints both saw him as a top 10 Quarterback. And we don't even know about the 20 or so other teams. We only know the 9 passed on him didn't, and 2 teams did. I guess you can put Buffalo in there as a team that didn't too, since they traded with Kansas City. so 10 didn't and 2 did. 20 others? who knows
Why are folks acting like Reid thought Mahomes football? Or like he wasn’t doing this at Texas Tech. The dude almost threw for 1,000 yards in 1 GAME AGAINST Oklahoma playing with scrub teammates.
“Nobody knew” is a lie. Besides many on this site, the Chiefs knew enough to trade up into the top 10 to draft him despite having a MVP candidate at the position coming off of 12 wins.
How does does someone who goes in the top 10 have no one view him as a top 10? How does the math work on that?
Because the public perception put him as the #3 quarterback in the class and very far from a slam dunk pick. Just because your opinion differed doesn't mean that a lot of professional opinions pegged him as a more developmental prospect than he ended up being.
