https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/01/08/marvin-lewis-cant-tell-owners-who-to-hire/ Is this guy down right delusional? To start, he had more opportunity than anyone in the NFL considering his complete lack of success. This is a completely made up conspiracy be Marvin Lewis, in regards to minority coaches not getting hired. Last season 5 minority coaches were fired (Marvin Lewis, Hue Jackson, Todd Bowles, Vance Joseph, & Steve Wilks) because they were awful, not because of any other reason. All these pundits on TV today are talking about it, and aren't even bringing up that there were 5 fired last year, which is over 50% of what there currently is in the league today. If they had all succeeded, they all would have jobs still along with the 4 other minority coaches in the league. Perhaps Marvin Lewis should look at Ron Rivera, a guy who actually had success unlike him, & had no problem finding a job. Lastly, Marvin Lewis can claim that he isn't saying this because he wasn't hired, but I guarantee you he wouldn't be saying this if the Cowboys hired him. Its interesting to, I don't recall Marvin Lewis bringing this up when he was in Cincy for 16 years, kind of odd he is bringing this up now that he doesn't have a head coaching job.
Who is Juan Rivera? Landscaping supervisor? Marvin is a chooch, my friend was on the roster for them through a couple of games when he was the coach of the Bengals and said it was embarrassing how the guys treated him, he had no control over those men. How about all the white coaches that get sent packing? It’s about merit, that’s it and that’s all it should be. Have minorities gotten a short end of the stick in the previous decades of football? Yes, but those days have changed.
While Marvin Lewis certainly had his opportunities worse coaches than him have gotten retreaded. And it is kind of embarassing every year there's at least one new great white hope inexperienced coach. When's the last time an Afro-American came in with the over the top hype of a Matt Ruhle this year or Chip Kelly a while back?
-Todd Bowles -Raheem Morris -Mike Singletary -David Shaw has been hyped forever but wont leave Colllege
Bowles and Raheem Morris didn't get 7 year, 70 million deals with full control and get chased by half the league for literally two years. Morris was more comparable to Judge, a youngish guy who hadn't been talked about in fact.
You're also forgetting about the hottest coaching candidates in the game at one time including Charlie Strong, Kevin Sumlin and David Shaw, all of which have elected to stay in college. Sumlin was the Eagles choice in 2016 and he chose to stay at A&M. Herm Edwards and Lovie Smith both got their retread opportunities immediately. Jim Caldwell got it three years later. After two chances you're usually done regardless of race.
That has nothing to do with them being white. Anyone who thinks that is delusional. As someone mentioned, Shaw has been constantly mentioned, also a few years ago Kevin Sumlin was very much hyped up but never came to the NFL. Also the Panthers probably overeached on Ruhle, but isn't this the same Panthers team that hired Rivera, and kept him when everyone wanted him fired early on, which then lead them to the Super Bowl the following year? To me, this is basically Marvin Lewis trying to blame race on an issue when there is no issue. If all those fired minority candidates, didn't shit the bed and suck, this wouldn't even be a topic. The fact is, the minority head coaches in the NFL failed hard, were awful, and were fired.......not because of their skin color but because they sucked.
Just because you are not racist does not mean racial bias (conscious or subconscious) doesn't exist or come into play out there. This article (two years old now) presents one facet of the issue pretty clearly. It is admittedly based on a small sample size, but it cites another research paper about NBA refs calling personal fouls that was based on a large sample size. We all (well, most of us) would like to live in a meritocratic, discrimination-free world, but we aren't there yet and it is best to recognize it. That's just my 2 cents.
I wonder how the posters on this thread would do on the race test. https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html
