The difference between being the hunt for a playoff spot, Kaare Vedvik, and the losses to Miami and Cincinnati. Even with Darnold out four weeks with mononucleosis, those three games mark the reason the Jets are 6-9 instead of 9-6, and in the playoff mix. if the Jets had a competent kicker at that time instead of that rookie slug missing an extra point, and a very makable field goal they probably beat Buffalo in week one. The losses to Miami and Cincinnati, two winless teams were inexcusable. Those three games. Arrrrrrgh.
To be fair today's game was basically the opposite of what usually happens to the Jets at the end of seasons anyway. Generally we're the ones losing to shitty teams when a playoff spot is on the line.
Something else would have gone wrong in the absence of those things having done so. The Jets are violently allergic to success.
10 different offensive lineman 8 different offensive line combinations . Exhibit A of why we’re not in playoff contention
You’re right in regards to the kicking situation on opening day. That should of been a win. That however does not excuse the other two losses - especially the Bengals. That was the sign of a flat, listless team with a terrible OL. George Blanda could have been the kicker and it wouldn’t have made a difference. As I’ve stated many times - fix the OL and you have a completely different team.
And the Jets finally beat the Steelers...in a game that meant shit all. If the playoffs were on the line for the Jets, they would have lost.
No, every team deals with injuries. Not every team has the complete carnage the jets dealt with in an area that was suspect already. We started 2 different players at each position along the o line, a unit that thrives on continuity and cohesion. It was the absolute perfect storm to set this team up for disappointment.
If we woulda won against Cincy, or Miami, or even Jacksonville - we would be in the middle of the wildcard race right now. If we were a playoff team these are games we should have won. We blew plenty of chances, both with and without Sam (and Ficken). Sam having mono is not the reason we aren't in the playoff race. Our sucky play in winnable games is.
We likely will end up winning 7 games but this is by far the worst NY Jet team I have seen since the Lou Holtz season. Even the 1 and 15 season we were much more competitive, leading at the half in 10 games, and a better team than this year. We were just really lucky that we played one of the easiest schedules ever. Last year's team was a much better team that was much more competitive and better coached which is a shocking thought.
I submit that any team with Wayne Hunter listed as a starter was worse than any team, regardless or record.
Wayne Hunter got a bad rap. Most of Sanchez's sacks were caused by Sanchez. The worst pass protection year Sanchez had was in 2011 where the Jets gave up the 5th least amount of qb pressures and 11th least qb hits but gave up a lot of sacks because Sanchez had a league worst 24 percent sack rate under pressure. Twice the rate of other QBs. He ranked 38th out of 38 QBs under pressure. Wayne Hunter at TE was not the problem rather Sanchez ducking his head, closing his eyes and running blindly until he ran into something was the problem. Put Sanchez on this team and he would set sack and fumble records. If he could stay healthy and not get benched i am sure he could reach 100 sacks and 50+ fumbles and INTs with this line.
