Don’t let the Jets scoring defense fool you. This team’s defense is among the best in the NFL. The New York Jets are 20th in the NFL in points allowed per game with 23.5. If you just looked at that stat you would think the Jets had a below average defense. They aren’t stopping the other team from scoring so they must not be that good, that’s what many fans think of the Jets defense. That’s simply not the case. The Jets have one of the elite defenses in the league. After holding a potent Raiders offense to just three points on Sunday they showed the league how good they can be. They now rank fifth in the NFL in total defense DVOA, 17th in passing defense DVOA, and second in run defense DVOA. Those are incredible numbers, especially that passing defense. The Jets starting CBs right now are rookie sixth-round pic Bless Austin and undrafted 3rd-year Arthur Maulet. The two of them, along with slot CB Brian Poole, held the Raiders to under 150 yards of passing offense. The Raiders came into the game last week with the seventh-best passing offense DVOA. This was not a bottom of the barrel passing attack, this was one of the best in the NFL and the Jets shut it down. Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams deserves a world of credit for the work he’s put in this season. He has taken a battered and bruised defense to the top of the league. This Jets defense traded Leonard Williams, hasn’t had either of their starting LBers for all but one game this season, is down to practice squad players at CB, and doesn’t have an edge rusher with more than five sacks this year. Gregg Williams doesn’t care about any of that. He has whipped this defense into shape no matter what the obstacle is. So why are the Jets allowing so many points? They have the worst average starting field position in the NFL by a wide margin. Teams don’t need to move the ball that well at all to score points against them. The sad fact is that the Jets offense has been so bad that it puts their defense in a position to fail. Yet, each and every week they go out and play at a high level. It truly is a testament to the work that Gregg Williams has done this season. It’s absolutely unbelievable that the Jets have a top-5 defense in the NFL, yet here we are. It’s entirely possible that Gregg Williams will win the NFL’s coordinator of the year award. If he does it’s likely that he will find a head coaching job next season. The award has only existed since 2014, but four of the five winners of the ward went on to get head coach jobs in the next season. The only one who didn’t was Wade Phillips who had multiple failed head coaching runs already. Hopefully, Gregg Williams is here next year to help lead the New York Jets defense into the future. He’s certainly earned the right to do so.
All good..... this got us a massive 4 wins but all joking aside My eyes and your eyes can see they are good And they got better after fat cat was shown the door As far as my stupid cocktail story goes... I literally told my son after the Raiders opening drive, “they might kick field goals but I can’t see the jets letting up a TD to them” and for the first time ever, I was right. Jets defense is good
If things work out with having two head coaches, Gregg Williams owning the D and Gase the O, but it really works out, two things: 1) We may see more teams in this copycat league trying it out (kudos Jets and Johnsons for getting one right). 2) We may offer Gregg the money and prestige and contract gaurantees to give him serious reason to pause, and turn down other HC offers. If Gregg really likes what he has here....being able to focus only the D but still wear a HC hat not just in name but with all the bling to go along with it (ie, money and a seat round table, draft input, etc).he might stay for the next 10 years! or until Bob Kraft offers him the NE gig.
Football is a complimentary game where defense, offense, and special teams affect each other. I always thought the Browns made a big mistake letting Williams go as their head coach. The Jets would be very wise to do everything to keep Williams (pay the man). Gase might fear that Williams would be his apparent successor and that might hurt their relationship. But if Gase has any brains, he should have Williams be his DC. Perhaps the two can work together and the Jets will finally win the big one before Broadway Joe passes.
The problem here is Williams was hired by Mac and Gase is quite insecure and easily threatened. It would not be surprising to see Gase try to get rid of Williams this off season. There have already been reports of friction between the two.
There were 2 or 3 reports by beat writers either after the Jags or Phins games where it was said they were not getting along. I think it was after the Jags game but I could be mistaken. One would think winning would heal any problems so maybe they can work together. But Gase's 1st rule has always been solidify and increase power for himself 1st which would mean Williams would have to go.
https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...droid-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 The only thing I see is opinion reports that there are going to be fiery practices and Gase complimented Williams defense. They clashed over hiring Williams son. Beyond that there's not too much there. Ditka and Buddy Ryan hated each other and it worked. Gase and Williams both (rightfully so) think the other is a dickhead. But that's ok. Most football coaches are dickheads.
What proof is there that Gase is insecure? Where and how has that come up or shown to be true? What reports are there, anywhere that there as been any friction between the two? What has either said that would lead anyone to believe this? I can't find one
I don’t know about us having one of the best defenses in the nfl, but...what Williams is doing with what he has is absolutely amazing. If he stays and we get more of the pieces we need this will be true in a couple of years.
