Still disappointed Mauldin didn't pan out--thought we had a good one there. That first play "concussion" or whatever the hell happened was weird. Regarding Demario Davis first stint with us, lots of NYJ fans were calling him statue, slow, and inept. Wanted him off the team.
It's almost like we overvalue these guys with the Jets when they're not even starters on real teams. That's what I'm hoping Douglas changes. We have way too many guys who don't belong out there.
His problem for me was always the poor angles he took which made him bad vs. off tackle runs. He fixed that in his second stint with us and really gave us the best LB season we've had here since David Harris in his prime 2009-2011. Maccagnan was too busy creaming over which corner he'd sign next to entertain bringing Davis back after that.
Craziest thing here is that there is maybe 5-6 players drafted since 2009 that have made a noticeable impact on this team, it's absolutely disgusting. For anyone wondering why the Jets are bad, this is most of the reason why. Horrendous drafting for a decade has left us with next to no talent at any position, let alone impact positions.
As far as slow goes, Demario Davis was was actually called out by Rex for running down Vincent Jackson (Bucs) from behind in the 2013 season-opener (was the game the Bucs gifted to the Jets with a late sideline hit; the 15 yards penalty allowing for a long game-winning FG at the buzzer).
Yep, Geno Smith first game and Revis revenge game. What I remember most was after Folk hit the game winner, cameras pan to Geno on sideline with his arms raised like he was the reason they won. Without that absolute gift personal foul call, no way Jets win.
Didn't Mac fire most of our scouting department when he was hired? I recall that there was a lot of turnover that occurred throughout the entire organization.
Can anybody put together a quick list of all the players that we could've taken instead over the course of 10 years and every single round. I'll wait...
Same could be said about overvalueing our GMs they bring in every 3yrs, I hope Douglas can bring quality to our draft picks and free agents, but that remains to be seen
At the very least he recognized a severe weakness for this team in center and did his best to try to fix it. Kalil sucks and it was a shitty band-aid but he at least threw a hail Mary to try to make it work with virtually nothing on the open market.
I mean Geno was a disaster but give him some credit in that win. For a guy that was nowhere near ready to start game 1 of his rookie year, he came out firing and accounted for over 300 yards of total offense despite being sacked 5 times. That game was a really cool opening day win. And Rex couldn't develop a quarterback worth a damn. But man. Did he win some games with some horrible performances from his QB. Geno threw 12 touchdowns and had 21 picks and we went 8-8. Just think about that.
it was an extremely lucky 8-8. That Tampa game was a complete gift as others have pointed out. So was the New England win later in the year where the refs gave the jets an extra chance at the winning field goal based on a stupid penalty in the waning seconds. Then there were late game wins against Atlanta and New Orleans in which the Jets were outgained significantly. They also beat Buffalo in a game they committed 20!!! penalties and just happened to catch some miracle deep passes. That was a team that should've won 5 or 6 games. It was actually bad for the fortunes of this franchise actually because it resulted in Rex Ryan keeping his job along with Marty Morningweg, both of them didn't deserve another year
Big part of the issue is because no one wanted the GM job. We don't fire coaches and GM's at the same time, hell we don't let GM's fire a coach or even let a coach hire his own guys. Most guys want to come in and set everything up, not walk into a disaster. We were stuck with Idzik because Rex had just embarrassed us countless times. Stuck with Macc because no one with clout wanted the job after Idzik failed so miserably. Darnold changed things as far as getting guys to come here. Hopefully in 10 years we can post a thread like this saying look how these guys are still on the team. I think we all deserve it.
I did that for the entire history of the Jets several years ago....it's out there on the interwebs somewhere. Just waiting for an update.
I agree that it ultimately hurt the franchise a lot more than it helped. But the Colts have won every game by less than a touchdown this year. Does that make it illegitimate? Tons of teams end seasons getting away with a lot of wins that they probably shouldn't have especially in this new era of penalty football. Either way that season was kinda fun. Way better than this one essentially over before October. Man was Geno maddening that year. I think he still has the single season pick 6 record. I'm actually pretty surprised Rex isn't coaching defense somewhere.
I have to ask... What's the point of taking a stroll down Misery Lane? We already know we couldn't draft our way out of a paper bag with one end open no matter how many high picks we use. Until there's a complete overhaul of the scouting and eval system, very little will change. That can also be said for the CS too.
