Namath is the reason I became a jet fan .. watching him in the late 60s and early 70s .. growing up in hempstead NY my Grade school Friends and i would ride our bikes to Hofstra University hoping to catch a glimpse of Namath .... I understand most of you younger cats never saw him play but he was something special ... he was like a God in New York at that time ... HBO did a documentary on him a few years back if you guys never seen it please do he had some arm..... Namath along with Walt Frazier Wore puma shoes I remember asking my dad for a pair of those leather shoes they cost 32 dollars at that time ...... my dad God rest his soul had a cow !!! I Remember him saying “$32 ??? No way your getting thoses shoes NO WAY!!!” That Christmas I got the white puma shoes
The original gun slinger and the original maverick, playing in a maverick league looking to open the game up. Was a perfect combo. Good choice!
First QB to throw for 4000 yards in 14 games which was a big deal then ..And I believe the only jet to thrown for 4000 yards Hopefully Sam Breaks that record
I got to work with Joe for a few days filming some commercials. He was extremely humble, kind and gracious as I drooled all over him.
I was 18 when I watched the Jets win SB III (check my log-in). Everyone knows about that game, but beating Oakland in the AFL final was even more riveting. Back then there was nothing more exciting than to watch him throw the ball deep to Don Maynard. The next year after Hank Stram and the Chiefs hung a licking on Minnesota in SB IV, leading to the merger, I remember some media wag awarding Pete Rozelle the "Johnny On The Spot Award" for absorbing the AFL before it absorbed him! Heady times!
In keeping with that, he held the record for passing yards per game for 13 years before Dan Fouts broke it in 1980
I was just reading on another site that Namath is overrated, and doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. It seems that his “stats” don’t measure up! Haha!
