I hope they sign vedvik to practice squad. If he can get his accuracy down could be good later with his powerful leg.
This is the Jets ... of course they didn't try him out. That would have cost nothing, generated goodwill and a feel-good story that might have gone viral, and made the fanbase that listens to WFAN happy for a couple days - even if he was terrible and didn't really deserve a tryout. A competent team gives the guy a tryout, puts it on YouTube, and gives him a Jets jersey to wear on his plane ride home (with the Jets picking up the cost of the plane ticket). The Jets completely blowing this guy off almost makes it automatic that he will eventually sign with the Patriots, Giants, or Dolphins and go on to make a Pro Bowl.
Happy with this. At the very least this guy honed his craft a bit in college (his final year in Penn State was very good) and has pro experience albeit what would amount to a cup of coffee if this were baseball. Still he has to be better than that rotten pile of excrement Vedvik. Who will never see an NFL roster again
lol. But hey in his defense he did attempt like 75 college field goals. And those can be a bit dicey with the hashmarks I know they are often forced to kick from some bizarre angles. Also nearly perfect on PAT's. Vedvik attempted 16 field goals for Marshall and that's it. That's his only football kicking experience. How Minnesota gave up picks for him is incredible. And the fact that we just brought him in and anointed him? Should've just rolled with Parkey or anybody else really
Its a really strange predicament. Think of all the times a kicker gets injured during the season,a team is forced to sign a replacement off the streets & In most cases the team doesnt miss a beat. This is why i initially had no issues w the jets passing on Meyers hefty price tag. He was a one year wonder anyway. You only pay kickers top dollar if they are true difference makers w elite raw kicking ability, consistency & clutch. What scares me is this is turning into the Vikings who have had kicking issues since Gary Andeerson choked in 98.They were the team that wanted Mike Nugent when the jets so wisely pounced on him in RD 2 in 2005 & they pretty much have never comfortably crossed that need off their list. With the way this team perpetually struggles to find long term solutions at Returner, edge rusher,#2 corner & more recently center..imagine adding kicker to that list
I dunno about that. 70-yard guy has zero experience. The learning curve would be 90 degrees vertical. Ficken has at least been on a roster and in a few camps, played in a few games and knows the routines. And what happens if they bring 70-yard guy in and he outperforms Ficken? Practice this week and the sideline in the next game will be part circus. Who needs that kind of distraction around? The Jets sure don't. And what happens when he goes 0-3 Sunday? You think Ficken won't cost a lot more then, if you can even find him? Seriously, be thankful for Ficken at this point. He has a ton more upside, and far less Gong Show effect following him around. And his last name is going to be a lot more fun than "70 Yard Wide Right Guy."
Am I the only one who finds it absolutely amazing that with all the guys all around the world who make a living kicking a ball and with all the American kids in college kicking in school, the NFL consistently comes up short about a dozen guys a year who can actually get the job done consistently? Another thought is that those parents out there like Earl Woods and Marv Marinovich are passing up a golden opportunity by not chaining their spawn to a kicking net as soon as they can stand unassisted.
Good kickers have long careers; the NFL would only need three or four new ones a year. Maybe we should be looking at the Brazilian equivalent of Woods and Marinovich. Maybe the Chinese will start breeding young kickers like gymnasts.
