Idzik is just doing administration in Jacksonville. He has nothing to do with the draft or scouting.

Can we just never mention that morons name again? Dude had 12 picks in 2014, didn't try to move up at all and whiffed on every pick in an absolutely loaded draft.

The bolded part is the biggest indictment of Idzik. He basically did little to improve the talent on the team in spite of having a huge number of draft picks and a lot of cap space with which to work. Mac at least did improve the roster with his #1 picks, trades and FA signings. Enunwa and Winters are the only two players from two drafts and 19 draft picks (including three 1st round picks) and Winters (3rd round in 2013) and Enunwa (6th round in 2014), Decker, Ivory, and a very unhappy front office are all that Idzik had to show for his tenure with the Jets. Enunwa is good/very good, but can't stay healthy. Winters is below average and has a hard time staying healthy. Richardson's still in the NFL at least. Three players to show for 19 draft picks. That's probably the worst job by a GM in NFL history. He didn't blow much on FA busts because he refused to spend any money. He put Mac in the position of having to spend a bunch of money his first year as GM, and that probably played a big part in Mac's not beginning the rebuild that year, whether it was Mac's decision or Woody's decision.

No, Mac's legacy won't be pretty if Sam busts, but imo, it won't be very pretty anyway even if Sam becomes a HOFer. Still, it is light years better than Idzik.

So it sounds like Macs legacy is “well, he was better then Idzik”.

I totally get your concern with Macc not using top picks on O-line. But he inherited a team void of talent. And skill positions (QB, WR, DB, pass rusher, LT) can only (reliably) be had at or near the top of the draft. He wasted top picks reaching for QBs (most important) and he addressed at least one line, our D line. He also got Adams and Maye.

If Macc had used our top picks on the O-line, we'd have the best O-line in football and a defense that gives up 80 points a game.

thie giants passing on darnold was a bit of luck but we don't know what info mac had on the QBs and the other teams draft. the important part was he put us in that position to get him. if he doesn't trade up to 3 before the draft, we don't land darnold or worse off, it costs us even more if indy is picking at 3 and all the teams are throwing offers at them for darnold. imagine if buffalo slide up to 3 and grabbed darnold and we wound up with allen or rosen instead? that is where the credit is due. also mahomes wasn't that highly rated at all with some experts seeing him as a mid to late 1st rounder. basically daniel jones / dewayne haskins level. Obviously the scouts were wrong in hinsdight but in no way was mahomes considered nearly as good of a prospect as darnold. You can't think of it that way, if that's the case shit on every GM without a QB for passing on guys like wilson, cousins, brady etc. lots of QBs because elite despite not being 1st round picks.

Don't know much about Polite (never heard of him before the draft) but he seems like a supremely talented pass rusher with a bad head/attitude.

Bad attitudes can change over time with maturity, so there's hope that someday, something will click inside his head and he'll become Lawrence Taylor overnight. Compare that with Vernon Gholston, who never had a chance talent wise.

We lost both 2nd round picks and were in an area where Macc had to roll the dice, and he gambled on a potentially dominant pass rusher. I'll take this over a guaranteed blue collar special teams player.

Whiffing on Mahomes sucks, but to be fair Mahomes is in the RG3/Kyler Murray/Michael Vick type of athletic player. In college Mahomes lost almost half his games. He was graded as a 2nd round QB but was rising fast near the draft. He had 'something' KC saw that Macc did not see, or did not value over Adams. Mahomes was a mid round pick that Macc probably didn't see as a top pick.

Daniel Jones (Giants 2019 pick #6 overall) is another one. Giants were mocked openly for taking a QB so high who lost more games than he won in college. But in preseason, Jones is looking GREAT. I think this is exactly what Macc had seen for Christian Hackenberg.

Where does the bad attitude come from? Everything I read up to today has been that he blew the pre-draft interviews but in Fl and her he has been improving and is not playing with the seconds. Try reading this it will provide a little more insight

He could have always traded back (for Mahomes or Watson) -- or just played it safe the way the Giants did this year (not saying that was smart -- just that's there are options). And for all the Mac brought us Sam talk, we should not forget that Macc's actual plan was Cousins. Think of how that would have turned out (what was it 90 mill guaranteed?!?)

The Sam plan was in fact -- draft whoever is left at 3, whether that was genius or luck will be debated forever

True I should have been clearer on that. He seems to be back in cap-land

I have a suspicion that Macc may never have a job in the NFL again

When you say in no way did scouts know you must be ignoring that the team that drafted him had a high quality starter and traded up to get him.

Again you have to be in it to win it isn't a plan, it's luck.

I know. Mac did some good things and I give Mac credit for his top selections - in the last a Jets GM would have screwed up that too. I agree he had a lot on his plate. My fault with Mac was how he handled the middle round picks and his constant trade downs. Trading down as much as he did usually results in what we saw. Not much talent in the pipeline .

Probably not but he can bring some good to a front office in another capacity. He made some shrewd trades and manages a cap pretty well.

Surely that depends on if another owner hires Casserly as advisor again!

Funny how they selectively ignore the UFAs and later picks that show the opposite trend.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about training camp news and tweets? Why is everybody arguing about Macc/Idzik? Move on...

90% of this board was excited at the prospect of landing Cousins. I don't recall too many threads demanding we hold off on Cousins in favor of trying to land Darnold, who most thought was far out of reach. Even you admit landing Sam was a flook...not too many GMs would pass on a FA QB in hopes of a flook working out in the draft.

I agree trading down too many times can trade you right out of the talented players. But we all know the draft (especially after the first few rounds) is a crap shoot. The more pics you get, the more shit you throw at the wall in hopes some of it sticks.

The worse thing a GM can do is start falling in love with this or that player and trade capital to move up. He usually ends up with nothing. I hear the Pats are great at trading down for more picks.

I guess in the end the only thing that matters is who a GM picks with those picks.

IMO the problem is not that Mac traded down too often or that he traded down. Instead, it's where (in what rounds) he traded down and how little he got in return. The proper place to trade down is in the 1st or 2nd round. That will give additional an 2nd or 3rd round pick and additional 4th or 5th round picks. Mac traded down in the 4th and 5th rounds, garnering mostly 6th round picks. That is not the point of the draft in which one should be trading down unless one totally needs to rebuild one's STs unit. At that point in the draft, a GM should be targeting either the BPA, or the best available player that fits a need, not trading down for more risky picks.

You're correct of course that this thread is supposed to be about training camp news and tweets. As you know, most threads here get derailed sooner or later. With training camp being over, there's really not much else to say regarding training camp.

We're not arguing. No one's upset. We're just sharing our perspectives/opinions.
