Ryan Kalil surprisingly joins Jets as Adam Gase lures latest Pro Bowler out of retirement

Before the 2019 NFL season, Ryan Kalil and Thomas Davisswore they were retiring. Only Kalil followed through, as Davis joined up with the Chargers this offseason, and now Kalil has even come back to the game he loves, signing on with the New York Jets to be their center, the team announced.

Kalil was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft and spent his entire career playing for the Panthers. But when he walked away, Carolina went out and splurged on Matt Paradis, who had become a free agent after time with the Broncos.

It would have been logical for Kalil to return to Carolina, but with the center void filled, he was going to need another spot.

Enter Adam Gase, the retiree whisperer. Gase famously lured Jay Cutler out of retirement when Ryan Tannehill went down with a training camp injury for the Dolphins before the 2017 season. Cutler had been slated to work for FOX Sportsin the broadcasting arena and instead ended up making a cool $10 million from Miami to come back and get beat up in a bad spot for the year. Cutler is now retired, living the dream as a reality star in Nashville.

Kalil enters a much better situation. Obviously, he'll be the starting center in New York, likely relegating Jonotthan Harrison, Jon Toth and Ryan Anderson to backup/training camp battle duties.

It's a tremendous boost for Sam Darnold, the second-year quarterback who's drawn rave reviews for his early play in training camp, because Kalil is a solid veteran presence who can help him identify coverages, pressures, etc. and provide a steady presence under center as he grows in a new offense.

Adding Kalil also fortifies the entire line -- it makes life easier for the guys playing guard next to him. Kalil is a two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler. It does merit watching how healthy he can.

Kalil was fortunate to stay healthy last season and get a full 16 games in for the Panthers. The prior two seasons, age and injury caught up and he only played a combined 14 games after being healthy for much of his career.

If the Jets can get 16 games out of the one-time retiree, they're going to be in much better shape, and there's a viable case that this offense can take a major leap in Gase's first year.

Tremendous job by our new GM Douglas And Gase getting the Center position Addressed who knows perhaps a Quality tackle and or cornerback shake free from cuts then perhaps we can really talk about wild card birth

You have to love this move as the 2 guys on the depth chart behind him at Center are a joke as starters. I don't think this fixes the line as IMO it still has weak links but this move sure helps the line and Darnold. Hopefully this guy stays healthy because we all know he played last season but missed a lot of games the previous 2 years. I hope his head is also on straight and he is mentally and physically ready to play, Its a very good move

Sorry i disagree At The very least this add depth to a very weak O-line ...given That Douglas has added ryan will help .... He’s better than what we had before him coming on board

Really? Are you so mired in the past that this is what you think about when a promising signing takes place?

I wouldn't say our o-line weak. it's patchwork and average but i don't see it as weak. harrison projected as the worst center starting in the NFL for 2019. we added a guy who was average last year and yeah a bit old but it's a 1 season stopgap and an upgrade to what we have had since mangold retired and he's a former 1st team all pro from 2015. Osemele is an upgrade from carpenter , he was a pro bowler in 2016 and 2017 and 1st team all pro in 2016. He just didn't fit their new system and they wanted to save cap room. those are big upgrades. winters, shell and beachum are all average starters. Last year we had a bottom 5 o-line, this year we should have an average one which isn't ideal but little is ideal in the NFL. next year we will likely have 2 new starters at the tackle positions. it's a great draft for o-line and LT. udoga likely takes over as the RT and we'll likely have rookies starting at LT and C. 1 step at a time

It's always fun reading other teams' message boards to see how the Jets are viewed with utter disdain by every other fanbase. I particularly enjoyed the comment that everyone on ESPN is a Jets fan - that's what happens when you don't have people on ESPN saying that the Jets are the worst organization in football.

YES! Even if he is 80% that's a huge upgrade at center. A good stop gap for one year until Douglas drafts our center of the future next year.

Absolutely true - all of this.

I really like the sudden, new direction of this team......definitely trending upwards.
