Belichick has made in-game decisions based on a nerd in the booth for years. https://www.npr.org/2016/01/16/463290737/the-man-behind-the-patriots-curtain-who-s-ernie-adams
Yeah, but...does anyone have any information on this particular nerd Sheldon? I asked a few days ago and others have also, has he been working on the draft end of things or the game planning? Both seems like a stretch, you don't hire a maritime engineer to build a radiation treatment system.
I have no idea what Sheldon does. And I don't think he's that much of a nerd. He has an MBA, not a PhD.* And he's spent most of his career on the coaching side, not the analytics side. *Not saying you have to have a PhD to be good at analytics. There are brilliant people without any degree, and there are PhDs who are idiots. And a PhD who thinks he's superior because he has a PhD is an idiot. But usually, an MBA doesn't have much of a quant background.
His job is one of a nerd. He may be the coolest guy on campus but that's not what his business card says. Should we run a poll to see if he's a draft geek or a play-calling geek? Is he running algorithms as we speak on who is going to be cut in 31 training camps or is he preparing spread sheets for Darnold's swing pass on the first down of the season?
As long as he doesn't want Darnold to roll out and throw a popup across his body on the first down of the season, I'm cool.
Lightening never strikes the same place twice. So...analytically...it makes sense to do just that. Am I getting this analytics thing...or what?
His past history was working on in game strategy and tactics in Miami, and evaluation of the coaching and player personnel staff in Chicago.
Yup, totally wrong; the places that lightning has struck have a far higher incidence of repeated strikes than places that have never been struck.
Probably overseeing both, new player procurement will likely be the responsibility of Douglas and his recent hires of Rex Hogan , Chad Alexander and Phil savage. There is also an analytics department in place that Sheldon was an addition to.
AI will learn who we actually are. Analytics is going to be run by AI at some point. Watson will learn and implement an SOJ factor into its analytics program. A good program will make sure that players the Jets acquire will play like a Jet.
Maybe. But you’re not who I’m talking about. I’m specifically talking about the hipster bloggers who have taken over the entire basketball discussion community that thumb their noses and snicker any time someone says “I don’t think ____ is better than ____ just because they have a higher PER”
Analytics is worthless if you can supply your team with talent. Nerds don't win super bowls players and coaches do. Joe Namath was hungover in SB III. Analyze that.
I hate baseball these days. It really boring and players don't stay with teams long anymore. The part I still love about baseball is the strategy aspect. They still make moves in later innings. Matching up certain pitchers against certain hitters. Just playing the percentages.
