Did he work out as hoped? NO.... but he provided some great moments for the JETS, so I'll say no..... He was overdrafted and started prematurely out of necessity. Imagine if captain Wrangler stuck around another year or two.... besides, there was a period where he was "27th ranked... but top ten best"
I would say for a guy who we moved up to draft at 5 he certainly was a bust. He also had an 8 year NFL career 4 as a starter. So yes he was a bust based on hyped expectations but he also had a reasonably long NFL career with a few good moments that comes along with the career. As a starting NFL QB not very good. As an engaging nice looking kid who was hyped through the rafters the perfect kid for ownership to draft a year before going into a new stadium where season ticket holders would be asked to pony up big money for the privilege to continue to financially support the team. He certainly wasn't a bust for Woody Johnson.
Just want to point out that you aren't being fair to Vince Young. He made 2 Pro Bowls (somehow) and was arguably better than Sanchez.
He did some nice things in his first 2 years, but even then, he was a below average QB. He didn't show enough improvement year to year to become the FQB he was drafted to be. In that sense, he was a bust. Have there been worst busts? Yes, but that doesn't make Sanchez exempt from being a bust. If we had average QB play in 2009 and 2010, who knows. Maybe we'd have a 2nd (or even a 3rd) Lombardi Trophy now.
He was a high 1st round pick. Traded up to draft him. He couldn't slide the NYY had to teach him. Was the (by far) weakest link on stacked 09 and 10 Teams. Ran the ball more and passed the ball fewest amount of times during those two seasons. He was hidden. Then was the weakest link and a disaster there on out. Turned to journeyman backup. Not a complete bust but enough to wish we never drafted him. Although a few awesome playoff performances. Also, didn't our coaching staff had to use red and green signal signs due to Sanchez throwing so many INTs during practice? I supported Sanchez but it was brutal once all said and done with.
Team carried him to the playoffs, Sanchez definitely was one of the biggest reason why we made both championship games once in the playoffs. I still believe it didnt matter what QB we had at the end of the day, I don't think they would have gotten us as far as Sanchez took us. We would have still been a wildcard team because of the Patriots, so its very hard to make a case another QB would have won 4 road playoff games like Sanchez did. Overall he was a bust, BUT he did give us some moments, so not a complete failure.
Torn here because we got to the playoffs those years with a #1 and #3 defense, 5 pro bowlers on the online, oh yeah and a pro bowl rb. Rex was the best defensive player caller we ever had. Braylon Edwards was more than capable and we did have Holmes, a former super bowl mvp win us a lot of games in 2010. Sanchez held us back in the season, but he did play very well in the playoffs, except for that pick 6 vs the Steelers right before halftime.
Yes, of course he was carried by that team..... but in regards to 2009/2010, yes, the level of QB had a TON of room for improvement, but as far as big picture for the final results: 2009.... would ANY rookie win a shootout vs Manning and the 15-1 Colts in the AFCC? I doubt it. Once the running backs and DBs (not named Revis) began to fall, that was the end 2010.... They were going to be a wildcard team no matter what... PATS were 14-2. He played good enough in the post season and very good vs. NE. The ending was a total team failure. Sanchez played like shit the 1st half, but unfortunately so did the run-defense. They woke up too late, and if they played like they did in the 2nd half to start the game, they couldve been in the SB. 2011... got his bell rung too early, and that was the beginning of the end..... and spiraled down into sucksville* *always will get probs for the playoff game in NE
I am one of the biggest Mark Sanchez supporters on this Board, but he was definitely a BUST. He was the #5 overall pick. He was given the chance to carry the team in 2011 and 2012 and clearly could not on his own. I think the Jets messed him up and hurt his career, but some blame falls on him. He could not succeed in Philadelphia, Dallas, Chicago, Washington, etc after leaving the Jets either. However, he did play really well in the playoffs in 2009 and 2010. That cannot be ignored. He had some really high highs with the Jets and clearly some low lows. For the #5 overall pick though: clear bust.
Well..and yet still getting paid more than we'll ever see. Why? Because he does exactly what the nfl tells him to. If that means look like a losing dufus.....nudge, nudge, eh govna, know what I mean.. wink, wink
depends on what is considered a bust. for our purposes i'd call him a bust. he was a top 5 pick QB and expected to be a franchise QB starting for us for over a decade. obviously that didn't pan out. with that said to play devils advocate he did make it to the AFC championship game 2 years, he lasted 10 years in the NFL (the average career in the NFL is like 3 years) he has a career record as a starter of 37-36, has more road playoff wins then tom brady (lol), so i can understand not labeling him a bust. compared to say hackenburg, manziel, tebow, brady quinn, paxton lynch, brock oswiler, etc he's had a much better career. So in short it is fair to say he isn't a complete bust, he just wasn't worth the 5th overall pick and wasn't a starting QB in the NFL.
Sanchez is not a bust in the likes of gholston, Jonny Mitchell,Blair Thomas all time jet busts. I think he is more of a disappointment. It was such a perfect storm of bad coaching, bad roster moves, early success and lack of learning on his part that made the whole thing fall apart.
There should definitely be context behind it, different degrees of being a bust. Surely, the Jets did him no favors, early 2011 thought he was turning the corner into a consistent QB, but injuries and a bad team just ruined his progression as a whole. I would probably consider him a bust, but not a monumental one like the ones you mentioned.
