Sam Darnold cannot remember a time when Patriots weren't on top New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is 21 years old-20 years younger than New England Patriots QB Tom Brady-and can literally not remember a time when the Patriots were not on top in the AFC East according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. "I'm just going to go out and do my best," Darnold said when asked about finally surpassing the Patriots. "I feel like literally in my lifetime, the Patriots have ended up on top. So, I'm just going to go out there and do my job. I'm never counting anyone out, honestly. Not just the Patriots, but every team that we play in the league." To be completely accurate, Darnold was five years old the last time the last time the Jets won the division in 2002 but probably not really aware of NFL football yet. But his point is clear. Since his birth on June 5, 1997, the Patriots have won 17 division titles, including 10 straight. From 2001 to present, New England has won 16 of a possible 18 AFC East titles. They finished second the other two times and have never had a record worse than 9-7 (2002) since Bill Belichick's first season in 2000. Darnold knows it will take a lot to change the pecking order in his division and much of it rests on his shoulders as the Jets' franchise quarterback. "I'm just going to go out there every single game and every single snap, do my job, and play to the best of my ability," Darnold said. "I know it sounds clichéd, but it's true. You got to do it. Every single play here in the NFL. And if you don't, you're going to get beat." Someday Brady will finally retire despite his seeming rejection of Father Time and Darnold will be in his prime. And if Darnold really does develop into the Jets' best QB since Joe Namath, someday the Jets could rule the AFC East like the Patriots have over the past two decades. Someday. Maybe.
