Harrison is a fine backup, but as a starter not too sure. And the center position is the quarterback of the O-line. 9 mil for one of the best centers would have been more than fine. I'd definitely try to draft a center with one of the 3rd round picks.
It is definitely not moot. There are plenty of more holes to fill, and they are getting down to the nitty gritty with cap space. Paradis was top 3, but is coming off the same injury as Mo Wilkerson. It is risky to pay somebody when you do not really know how their recovery and return to the game will be. I don't think Macc wanted a repeat of the Wilkerson fiasco.
Could have come down to the guaranteed money. He probably wanted certain things in his contract that the Jets didnt want to give. Perhaps they would have offered more if they didnt get Bell since we would basically be desperate to make a move with all this money. I was really upset we didn't get him but the more I think about it, I am happy that we got Bell at such a good price and would rather have him than Paradis.
Exactly this. Harrison is the de facto starter for now - most likely the Jets center for 2019 will be a draft pick. Younger, cheaper, not coming off a major injury, and potentially better.......?
Maybe the Jets didn't like what they saw on the medical..isn't he recovering from a badly broken leg?
Centers, especially ones with young QBs, make the line calls for protections. They also handle the pressure up the gut and in some schemes are asked to pull. Its the "Quarterback" of the offensive line. If you get a top one, you pay them like it, just like we did for years with Mangold and Mawae.
I read something that the Jet had talked to them and were the only bidder ( I have subsequently read reports to the contrary) and the Paradis' agent went back to Denver to try and engage them. I was so pissed on reading this seeing the same crap as Cousins etc. If that first report were true on the going back to Denver part, the Jets would have been smart to tell him smell you later Options will emerge
Mac simply doesn't place a premium on offensive linemen. He has hinted at this in the past and his track record reflects it. Ultimately think it'll be his undoing.
it depends on the team. Some centers make the line calls but the center doesn't have to. Mangold and Mawae were always some of the best of the best, but plenty of teams do just well with players like Harrison at center and spend their money elsewhere. There are multiple ways to get it done. Also, just because Harrison is relatively new to us doesn't mean he's some scrub anyway. He a 6 year vet with 32 NFL starts at center. Harrison also is a college graduate and a former team captain at Florida, presumably you can't be dumb and accomplish either of those. (well it is Florida I guess ) Anyway, I think he can get the job done.
I heard his timeline to return was June... signing him would have been a giant gamble which this FO didn't want to take. The whole narrative that they were too busy with Bell is such bullshit.
