The following is an article over at msgnetwork.com and i did not realize the bills o-line was struggling this much. We should have our way against losman if mangini and sutton apply some pressure on him because he is mistake prone. I feel alot better about sunday after reading this article. The only down side is the bills wide recievers roscoe parish, pierce, and evans all have big play ability to take one to the house so its going to be a blitz if you dare type of game. My guess? mangini sends the house the way he did vs. new england and the jets come away with a 20-10 win. Dan Leberfeld Cashing in on Bills Dec 07, 2006 So often when previewing a Jets game, you say the key to the outcome is the performance of Pennington. And this game is no different. When the Jets and Buffalo Bills face off this Sunday, there will be a lot of pressure on Pennington. But in this game, the Jets want Pennington to struggle. Say what? Yes, if the Jets can exploit Bills rookie right tackle Terrence Pennington and the rest of Buffalo's patchwork offensive line, and harass the Bills’ antsy, mistake-prone quarterback J.P. Losman, this could help spearhead a Jets win. At the bye week, the Bills were struggling, and coach Dick Jauron decided to reshuffle his offensive line. One of the moves was plugging in Pennington, a seventh-round pick from New Mexico, at right tackle. Left tackle Mike Gandy wasn't playing well, so Jauron moved the team's most athletically gifted lineman, Jason Peters, to left tackle. The right tackle spot was filled by Pennington. Losman should feel the heat from the Jets 'D.' (AP) In the two games following the bye, this reconstructed line gave up nine sacks. And not helping matters was the season-ending injury to veteran right guard Chris Villarrial, who was like a coach on the field to Pennington. Now the rookie is lined up next to second-year guard Duke Preston, who can't be much help to him. He’s trying to figure things out himself. And young offensive linemen can really have a hard time against 3-4 defenses, a front that is a lot more difficult to figure out than a conventional 4-3 front. Last week, the Buffalo line struggled dealing with San Diego's 3-4; outside linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips combined for three sacks. After struggling during the first half of the season, the Jets’ 3-4 front is starting to get its act together, especially in the pass rush. It certainly has helped in the last two games that the opposing offensive lines have been rife with dysfunction and inexperience. And that will clearly be the case again this week. Two guys who have spearheaded the improved pass rush are defensive end Shaun Ellis and outside linebacker Bryan Thomas. Against Houston and Green Bay, Ellis had 2.0 sacks and Thomas 3.5. Ellis and Thomas should be able to dominate Buffalo’s right side of Pennington and Preston and make Losman's life miserable. While Peters is an athletic freak, a 6-foot-4, 345-pound dancing bear, he's not close to being a finished product. Remember, Peters was a tight end at Arkansas, who the Bills made into an offensive tackle. He has been starting for just a year, with most of his work on the right side. The Jets also should be able to exploit Peters, who is still getting comfortable at the position on the left side. And if the Jets can dominate the Bills’ offensive line like they should, they will force Losman into some bad decisions. Buffalo offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild tends to keep the shackles on Losman, rarely calling risky plays. The team's red zone approach is a case in point. Against Indianapolis, the Bills had 11 red zone plays that netted minus-2 yards. Fairchild seemed fearful of calling passes in the end zone very often, concerned about a turnover. Losman seems to be another one of those one-read quarterbacks. He has just 12 touchdowns in 12 games, and leads the league in three-and-outs. The creative defensive schemes of Eric Mangini and Bob Sutton could turn Losman into a basket case. They seemed to have him baffled in Week 3, a Jets win at Buffalo, where he fumbled twice on blitzes by safety Kerry Rhodes, and was also picked off by cornerback David Barrett. And since the Jets defense is a lot more comfortable now in their first-year system, this could get ugly. But so much of the ability to send the dogs after Losman will depend on the Jets’ ability to stop the run. While the Jets’ run defense has improved a little in recent months, it's still not where it needs to be. Even in a blowout win last week, the Packers rushed 23 times for 149 yards. The Jets hope McGahee doesn't get the better of them this time around. (AP) Bills running back Willis McGahee must be licking his chops. He ran 26 times for 150 yards in Week 3. But Gang Green’s run defense actually wasn't that bad last week, except for back-to-back plays in the second quarter, where Ahman Green ran for 11 and 35 yards up the middle. The Jets can easily fix what broke on these plays. On both big runs, backup nose tackle Rashad Moore was blown off the ball and taken out of the play. He shouldn't have been dressed for the Packers game. He has a broken bone in his left hand, and was forced to wear a club. Why would you play Moore, who has been struggling when healthy, with one healthy hand? This was a personnel decision that made little sense. The Jets should deactivate Moore until he's healthy, and play nose tackle C.J. Mosley, acquired in a September trade with Minnesota. Speaking of running the football, the Jets’ ground attack, which got its act together last week, should pick up where it left off against Green Bay. Buffalo’s smallish front seven is really struggling against the run and getting pushed around quite a bit. The Bills gave up 207 yards rushing against the Jaguars two weeks ago, and the Chargers gashed them for 199 last week. A physical, downhill back like Cedric Houston should be able to get a lot done against the Bills’ undersized defense, which is without their second-leading tackler, linebacker Angelo Crowell, who was put on IR this week. And if the Jets run the football, Chad Pennington should be able to torch a secondary, featuring two rookie safeties, with play-action passes. Young defensive backs historically bite a lot harder on play-fakes than veterans. So as you can see, the Jets have no excuse to lose this game. The Bills have a lot of exploitable areas.
WOW...there really is no excuse to lose this game. Infact we should win by at least a TD. They are a mess everywhere... Can't score in the redzone, most three and outs in the NFL, Offensive line problems, can't stop the run, mistake prone QB and they are playing on the road. We MUST win this game tomorrow because we are the much better team.
Quick question, isn't Thomas lined up against the left tackle? or did the coaching staff switch him out with Hobosn?
the jets should absolutely blitz the hell out of losman...however the key part of that statement was that in order for them to blitz effectively they need to stop the run. against the texans the jets blitzed only 12 times....against the packers they blitzed 12 - 16 times and most of those weren't all out blitzes....as the article points out the jets gave up a lot on the ground which takes away the blitz...so just as easily as the jets can dominate this game, they can be taken out of theyre gameplan by willis mcgahee... its imperative that the jets get off to a quick start offensively and pour on the points...if they can do that it may take the bills away from the run a little bit...
Jets better destroy JP Losman. I've never liked this kid, hes so full of $hit and thinks hes better than what he is. Texans should be ashamed of themselves.
that article is so bias, its not even funny...mistake prone losman? Player Team G Att Att/G Cmp Pct Yds Yds/G Lng TDs Int Sck SckY Rate J.P. Losman BUF 12 327 27.2 206 63.0 2191 182.6 83 12 10 35 267 82.0 Chad Pennington NYJ 12 352 29.3 226 64.2 2437 203.1 71 13 13 23 122 81.4 losman has a better qb rating...one td less than pennington, and 3 less int's... plus losman has been sacked 35 times, and is running most of the time for his life, and completing 30 yard passes on the run.....could you imagine how much better he would be if he had a good offensive line??? Losman is also ranked higher than pennington....this article was definately written by a jets fan....but what can you say the media is bias all of the time anyway...
QB rating is, well, overrated. The only real stat the matters is the W. And are you implying the media is Jets' biased???:rofl2:
they are jumping on the wagon, greenmachine...which is totally acceptable, thats what they do...im just saying that acticle was really bias...buffalo had a ruff 1st half of the year, but they have put it together the second half of the year.. we have lost 2 of the last 5, and the two we lost, we lost by a total of 4 combined points...and the teams we lost to were the colts and the chargers....losing by three to the chargers and one by the colts...we have made big strides the last 5 weeks..
I think we double bluff them and fake blitzes, sitting in coverage and cutting off the deep ball, forcing Losman to make mistakes and turn the ball over. They'll be expecting blitz-heavy defence and looking for the hot receiver, etc.
eh, maybe if you're looking at just the numbers. but you also have to take into account, when they turned the ball over. for example, one of Pennington's picks came from a desperate heave on the final play of the first Pats game, when the game was over. granted, Pennington has thrown some costly picks (i.e. Bears game), but I wonder if his turnovers have been less crucial than Losman's. cheers
I'm with you there , Losman is not the threat , McGahee is , sore ankle or not. Blitzing all day is just going to make holes.Gamble with the blitz but don't send it every time, Losman will lose it in the end. I'll put my head on the block and say that Losman gets intercepted 3 times , one for a TD. Leon and Cedric both rush for over 100 yards each :drunk: I thankyou Goodnight
Auggy will hit his little disappearing act after Sunday...Last contest was hillarious, he talked so much shit, left a thread and then hi-tailed it out of here... Classic.
If the OL is as bad as advertised (and it is), then the Jets D should be able to get pressure by sending 4.
JP isnt as bad as the article suggests. He had some great performances early in the year, against the patriots and mabey against us if i can remember. He has the potential but i dont see him as good as Pennington
