I don't think Caldwell is Neimann Marcus and we're interviewing McCarthy also. You think McCarthy will accept the Browns job before he interviews with the Jets? Browns may have better talent but I see him preferring D'Arnold over Mayfield. Mayfield seems more problematic down the road
Yes there's a chance he will. Because even if he likes Darnold better than Mayfield, which he easily may not, Dorsey >>> Mac.
I really don't see Maccagnan as being an impediment. If Macc can't cut it, he's out and McCarthy gets power. In fact, I'll bet that's what Johnson tells him and that's why Johnson is keeping his hand in this. I see Dorsey as more of a roadblock for McCarthy if they butt heads.
My biggest concerns with him are 1) his in game time management where he has struggled a lot with and 2) will he adapt to the changing NFL offenses (I've seen several people saying that he hasn't adapted to but eh)
Solid points, Biggs. He also had that one and done flame-out against the Giants in the NFC Divisional Round back when the Pack went 15-1 in the regular season. When you look at McCarthy's career, the Super Bowl run iin 2010 is the outlier. There are a lot of Packers fans who felt that overall, he underachieved in getting to only one Super Bowl with Rodgers as his QB.
haha, Thanks Footballgod214, I appreciate it! I hope you guys hire a great coach. I don't think that McCarthy would be a "bad" hire by any means, but I do think that you could do better. He is a "safe/solid" hire, but there is a reason why a lot of Packers fans wanted to move on from him.
Was thinking about your latter point earlier today. I agree. He just had a diva QB, why would he want another. ?
Don't see that. He would be reporting to Dorsey I believe, but not to Mac. He will be his own master with probably a strong voice in personnel.
I don't care about what other teams do, just what the Jets do. In their case, not being in the playoffs for 8 years, do you really think they should risk going another 2 or 3 years (or more) while a newbie HC does his OJT? Sure, maybe they get lucky and find a "McVey", but realistically what are the odds of that happening? I don't think most fans have the patience for another misfire in the HCing dept.
McCarthy's playcalling is extremely uninventive and relies heavily on players winning individual matchups. You can barely get by with this when you have Devante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and the best QB in the game. It took 3/4 of the season before McCarthy would tentatively start Aaron Jones, who was clear cut the best player. I question so much about this guy. We know exactly who he is and it's not impressive. I'd rather take a chance on the potential of one of the younger unproven guys and perhaps strike gold, rather than settle for lame and mediocre for the sake of stability.
It's understandable and smart to question. The thing is, he won't have talent like that here and unless he's flat out stupid, he'll have to adapt or change here in order to be successful. I also wonder if he didn't adapt there because Thompson didn't ever give him any options. He hasn't had a topnotch TE or RB in years, maybe a decade. That would limit his abilities to adapt or change. All he had was Rogers and his ability to extend plays and improvise and great WRs. With the Jets, unless they draft a stud WR or RB, he won't have topnotch players at either of those positions, but will have a pretty good young TE or two. Sam is mobile and able to extend plays, but doesn't have a stud WR or WRs to throw to. As far as Aaron Jones, none of us knows how he practiced in GB or what he showed early in the season. It may have taken a full season of practice for the light to go on for him. Unless you have some strong inside information or evidence, I don't think you can make that claim about his being the best player and criticize McCarthy for not starting/playing him earlier. Monken didn't have a topnotch QB or TE, but he had a pretty good young RB and a couple of good WRs. Do you think Monken would be better, or whom would you rather see the Jets hire as HC?
Sure it's straight up gambling, but after five straight coaches with no prior head coaching experience the odds have to be that the next one will produce a winner, right? Forget that the record over that nineteen years is 141 - 163 and there were only twelve playoff appearances with those five OJT head coach guys. Never mind that in five fewer seasons McCarthy has had six more playoff appearances and has a 16% higher won/lost percentage. Let's just go with a new guy again, sooner or later one of them will pay off, right?
I honestly think he turns down any deal to coach for Cleveland. I just don't see the fit and the current interim head coach, Greg Williams, seems to be a great fit, who now has half a years worth of experience with Mayfield and the current roster. I firmly believe that McCarthy likes what he sees from Darnold. He has traits similar to Rodgers including his mobility in the pocket and ability to make accurate throws on the run. It also merits some attention that Darnold had one of his best games against Green Bay, which I am positive McCarthy watched. The only thing that I could see drive McCarthy away would be the "power structure" Johnson has made clear, will remain the same. That may be somehting that rubs McCarthy the wrong way, but he also may gel well with Mccagnan and that could be seen as a non issue. I think, and hope, he becomes our next head coach. A lot of experience and a winning background in the NFL. As I've said on here before, Mike McCarthy with Sam Darnold in the AFC, would be lethal. With Brady and Belicheck about to retire, this could be his ticket to constant playoff appearances he has always be accustomed to
I think the way to build a dynasty is to hit on the right young QB and the right young coach. In order to make that a lasting proposition, the best answer is to draft a new young QB, rather than sign one as a FA, and to bring in a new young HC, rather than bring in a retread. Yes, that may mean OJT--just like it means OJT for a rookie QB. Obviously, some NFL-great coaches have done better at their second stops--Shula, Belichick, George Allen, Dungy, Vermiel, Coughlin. And plenty of NFL-great coaches were first-timers--Madden, Lombardi, Paul Brown, Bill Walsh, Landry, Noll, Gibbs, Halas, Lambeau, Bud Grant, Jimmy Johnson, Holmgren,. And, of course, only Weeb was able to win it all both ways. Retreads can suck just as bad or worse than rookies-- remember when the Jets brought in Rich Kotite from the Eagles? If the whole premise for this idea of a retread is to minimize risk, then the obvious end answer is to bring in this generation's version of Marty Schottenhimer: Marvin Lewis. That way we can win 10 games a year for the next decade, and shit the bed in the playoffs. Sounds real fun. I say go for the jackpot and try to find the next Bill Walsh instead.
I am less and less convinced that we are going to land Mccarthy as more time passes. We already completed one interview and have scheduled others (Gase/Friday, Richard/Sunday) yet no scheduled interview for Mccarthy.
Cleveland would be flat out nuts to dump Williams. It's turmoil with no upside. That said McCarthy wants the Cleveland job. He's keeping his kids in school in Green Bay and it's an equally unattractive place to live.
As far as Aaron Jones goes this is not my isolated opinion. His superior talent was evident to anyone who watched them play, and widely criticized throughout by NFL aficionados and local media. In regards to McCarthy's play calling ability, are you saying he ran a stagnant vanilla offense because he was complacent with his supreme talent at WR, and thus he would break out his secret cutting edge playbook if he came to NY with the lesser talent?
Mike McCarthy with a backup QB starting is 5-12 and 1. In contrast Bruce Arians with essentially the same Cardinal team last year as this year went 500 including 5 and 4 with back up QB's. Drew Stanton, starting in place of Palmer had a 9 and 4 record starting under Arians.
