Interesting Cotchery stat Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery has caught 60 of 88 passes thrown to him this season, a 68.2 percent rate that is highest among all Jets starting wide receivers in the last 10 years. And if he maintains his 4.6-yards-after-catch average, he'll have a team wideout mark bettered only twice since 2001, by the speedier Santana Moss, who is now with the Redskins.
1st round / 2nd round...it doesn't matter now. Coles is without a doubt one of the top 15 wrs in the league
I agree. Warrick was the first WR picked and look what he amounted to? Performance in the draft means nothing. Performance on the field means everything. It's great that they'll be negotiating CATCHery's contract early since it will most likely save us a ton, and ensure that we keep this team intact for the next few years.
Even if it doesn't save a ton it will be worthwhile to lock him in at 2006 prices vs what the ever spiraling cap (113 to 116 million next year) produces in the 2008 free agent market. The Deadskins will no doubt be giving some wide receiver an 8 million per year contract with 20 million upfront. Signing Cotchery to a 5 year 35 million deal with 15 upfront will be a lot better than paying the extra freight that Snyder attaches...
i reckon cotchery gets 40 mil for his 5 years, with minimal backloading. Poss as much as 17m guaranteed. We'll check back.
Coles has very underrated speed. I think he gets mislabeled a "possession" WR only because having Pennington as a QB means you have to play like a possession WR more, but give him a QB with a better arm and he would be as good as any "speed" WR out there.
Coles got sick numbers. If Cotchery gets the same #s Coles got in 2003, he ripped us off. The Jets DID NOT FUMBLE negotiations in 2002.
He was a possession receiver in Washington too. (and Ramsey had an arm) The man is lightning fast, in a straight line. He doesn't play with that speed on gameday...
DAm right Rhodes is probably the best saftey we ever had and cotchery has so much heart and determination its incredible:grin:
They badly fumbled negotiations in 2002. That's what led to Coles, Thomas and Hall all going out the door. They also fumbled the qualifying offer to Coles, which gave them less compensation back than they should have gotten for a pro-bowl caliber receiver.
The only thing the Jets blew was the quailifying offer. There was no reason to pay Hall big money and 'skins blew Thomas away with their offer (if I am recalling correctly)
I agree. Coles stepped in sh*t with his contract. If we paid every player like we're paying Coles, we'd be way over Cap. The great thing about the direction in which Mangini is taking us though, is that it'll make it easier for Tannenbaum to sign guys, I think. Cotchery is a Jet, wants to remain a Jet and will be happy with a decent (but not excessive) contract (I hope).
The Skins got what they deserved in the end though. And it ain't over, since we'll be getting what looks like a pretty high #2 pick from them come April.
no doubt, although the Jetskins beat us on a kick by Hall opening day, Morton and Hall were busts, the skins ate a lot of dead money on Coles' contract to trade him and Thomas has been solid yet unspectacular and injured.
The Jets could have had Thomas locked up a year earlier to a reasonable contract if the FO hadn't decided to let the market price his value. He was widely seen as an up and coming guard who would help anchor a team's line for the forseeable future. What we got instead was a converted defensive lineman standing in front of Chad Pennington in the pre-season as the Jet's 2003 hopes shattered with his wrist. Of course in hindsight that was the first step towards getting rid of Terry Bradway as GM so I guess things work out in the long run. It was the 6-10 in 2003 as much as the 4-12 in 2005 that took the luster off of Edwards and Bradway and made them both really vulnerable.
Laveranues Coles, possession? Possession is the opposite what these guys are, they have the speed and strength to break tackles and gain extra yards, Coles runs around a 4.35, and Cotchery a 4.50, Coles could be an amazing deep threat if Pennington could throw more than 30 yards.....
Coles supposively ran a 4.19 at FSU once. He's still a possession receiver. He doesn't play with that speed. Cotchery is the definition of possession. Yeah, he's strong, yeah he breaks tackles, but he's a possession receiver. Coles played 2 years with Ramsey.. and if there is ANYTHING he could do, it was throw it deep, and he was still a possession receiver. Last 3 seasons, Coles is averaging 10.6, 11.6 and 12.0 per catch. That's a possession receiver. Cotchery? 10.0, 13.2, 12.8. Same thing. Santana Moss, in contrast: 20.0, 14.4, 14.9, 18.6, 17.7 and this year, with his injuries, down to 14.3.
I think there's a distinction to be made here: the Jets fumbled negotiations from the perspective of not anticipating that the Skins would make the offer that they did and that they would lose Coles. The compensation they received back from the Skins, however, was more than fair.
