You spent all offseason fixating on finding not only the best QB but the best fit.Bates was at his pro day.Im sure he was in the team interview w Sam. How does this happen?
Darnold probably cursed Bates out when Bates tried calling a lateral pass to a RB like in the Lions game.
And how would that do so, if his own hire as an offensive coach somehow has a communication issue with a guy who comes across as ridiculously low-maintenance? How would that deflect anything off of Todd?
Always loved the story from the offseason where it was reported that he wasn't interested in the OC job, wanting to remain QB coach, and he had to be convinced by the Jets to take it. One more week.
Yeah, I thought that too. Then I thought that Bowles hired Bates, so he should take that blame too even if Bates really is terrible. As most have said, hopefully neither Bates nor Bowles are employed by the Jets by Monday, so it doesn't matter if Darnold and him get along. Sam is a class act, but he also wants to win and compete. Bates has made it difficult for him to succeed, so I could see him being frustrated with him. I know we all are as fans.
For a stretch during the season I thought the Jets were doing a good job developing our young quarterback. Now I see that all the credit goes to McCown and Sam himself. That's fucking hindsight...
Morton was better than Bates but he was also steaming trash. Dude basically invented the HB draw on anything 3rd and 10+. I also remember him running the ball in the 4th quarter of the Saints game last year completely giving up in a professional football game. After the game he said he basically put up the "white flag" and they "just wanted to get out of there". That's completely unacceptable and I'm glad Bates will join Morton as ex-coaches.
Exactly, how is it even possible to have a disagreement with Darnold? I'm not buying that Darnold wouldn't listen to Bates. That just doesn't fit his personality in the slightest. I can see maybe Bates thinking that McCown could help Darnold understand certain pieces of information better given that he also plays QB. Maybe the original source meant that Bates was using McCown to help Darnold understand things and it totally got misconstrued like a game of telephone.
Couldn't get through to and not get along are vastly different things IMO. That said its obvious thsi staff needs to go. We need a coach that is inventive and flexible, not one who is going to try and stick square pegs into round holes within his system.
Yup it was Denver. I was at the Saints game in NOLA last year and the JETS actually put up a decent fight in that game.
Let’s think about what we know about Sam. I read somewhere, he doesn’t bring a notebook or write anything down. He’s also laid back. Those two things alone would rub certain personalities the wrong way. Believe me, I’m not defending Bates here. They’re going to need to find someone that can work with that kind of personality in a QB. It’s clearly not Bates. Waiting until the last minute to get a play off. Three run plays in a row....every series. That kind of stuff has to go. Whatever happened in the last couple of weeks should’ve been happening in the first couple weeks, you know...when everybody was healthy. I’m putting this on Bates.
Not a stretch to assume that the game slowed down for Sam and he was better able to execute Bates offense. Also not a stretch to think they changed things up on offense 13 weeks to late to try to play to the kids strengths. And another thing: suddenly Robby Anderson can run routes. It’s no coincidence that Darnold has had more success since Anderson has immerged as a real threat outside of the long ball. Herndon as well. Regardless of this CS debacle, the future really is starting to look bright. Now if we could just play defense (foreshadowing)...
