The only way I’d get rid of Mac this offseason is we do end up hiring John Harbaugh and he wants to bring in his own GM with him.

Macs done some good and bad during his tenure but I’d rather ride or die with him than hire another first time GM that we know nothing about. I may feel differently if there was a sure thing GM candidate available but I don’t know if any.

With that said I’m really starting to prefer John Harbaugh for HC. If that happens I doubt he’d be open to Mac staying onboard.

Foundation-wise from the Maccagnan era so far: Sam Darnold, Robby Anderson, Marcus Maye, Jamal Adams, Darron Lee, Chris Herndon, Leo Williams, Brandon Shell, Lachlan Edwards, Elijah McGuire (?), Frankie Luvu (?), Jason Myers, Avery Williamson, Henry Anderson, and maybe Spencer Long (Seemed reasonable at LG, indicating he may be fine at Center if his fingers heal over the offseason)

I think we may still be feeling the hangover effect of the Idzik days. We literally have only 2 players from his 2 years of drafting during his time here (Enunwa and Winters).

No to Leo , Darren Lee & Robbie Anderson ... no way I’m investing big $ in any of these under achievers.

At best, there are only three from your list that I would call "foundational": Darnold, Adams, Maye (maybe). The rest could all be replaced by better players, if available. That's the problem with Macc: he's done barely above mediocre, if that, and I give him that grade on the basis of landing Darnold. That said, he should've taken Mahomes or Watson the year before and the Jets would be way ahead of where they're at now. Making it worse is that he was supposed to be a draft expert - that should have been the one thing he was good at, but that hasn't been the case.

There a couple of reasons he should be retained:

    1. There is no one better who they can convince to take the job.
    2. The next HC (assuming Bowles is fired, which I won't believe until it happens given how this ownership works), is really strong and can impose his will as to player acquisitions on Macc.
    3. A Pres. of Football Ops is hired to oversee everything he does, especially player acquisitions.

None of these reasons have anything to do with how good a job he's done.

Here's 8, not including any kickers - Adams, Maye, Jenkins, Lee, Williams, Darnold, Anderson, Shell (10 with kickers, I guess).

Until we know what money they'll be commanding, they're still potential foundation pieces to play with.

In terms of underachieving, a year ago I would have agreed with you with regards to Darron Lee, but he's really stepped up this season it seems. A LB who can cover is extremely valuable in the NFL nowadays.

Whether it's Mac or another GM next year, they won't be left with a team nearly as decimated as when Mac took over for Idzik, nor as cap poor as when Idzik took over for Tannenbaum.

On that part (the bold), I completely agree.

I think he's been pretty average overall, though we may look back in hindsight and see him as better than average if Darnold/Adams grow, and we get more value from his last two drafts. Not adverse to replacing him at this stage, but not going to be distraught if we don't. Bowles and the rest of his staff are the only ones that would make me feel that way haha.

In terms of foundational, seems like perhaps I have a different definition/scope of what that word means compared to you and evojoe. To me it's anyone who can hold down a starting job for the next four years or so through competence rather than lack of talent, i.e. someone we'd only be desperate to replace if they got injured or demanded a ridiculous contract.

I believe the team could've had a better OL and skill players than what he's provided over the last 4 years.

Very true. And Mac is a real football guy unlike Idzik who was some flustered capologist.

Well I won't be distraught if he's retained, but severely disappointed unless one of the three reasons I listed applies.

In a looser sense, the guys you listed could be considered a "foundation" since the Jets could go forward and not HAVE TO fill those positions (unless someone better were available), and of course they are rebuilding and they need to start somewhere. But I think Macc could've done much better.

That's fair enough. For some reason, our last 3 GMs seem to have criminally undervalued skill positions, Idzik and Mac seem to have undervalued OL. Tannenbaum at least did put stock in OL.

I'm still pissed that Idzik didn't resign Austin Howard after the WFH years.

Thanks! I'm not really worried about it, but I believe in admitting when I'm wrong and/or make a mistake. I don't claim to know it all. I'm opinionated, and try to have rational reasons for my opinions, and then will defend them strongly, but am open to changing my mind if someone can convince me otherwise or when I'm proven wrong.

I agree with much of your post, but not the part about finding a GM/HC duo that have a history/relationship with each other. If you mean that they've worked together before, then ok, but still that can prove very difficult to find, and doesn't mean that you'll be getting either the best HC or the best GM. You're right that they have to have a cohesive plan. When the GM is the boss, then you have that. He formulates the vision/plan, and then hires a HC that buys into that plan and helps execute it.

That's a pretty good list, and I think it's pretty accurate with the following exceptions.

Chris Herndon has shown some potential, but can't be counted on yet
The same thing is true of McGuire and Luvu
    Anderson is a one-trick pony
Shell is decent, but the RT spot could easily be upgraded. At least he can be solid depth, if nothing else.
Jenkins is a decent starter. Why did you leave him off?
Darryl Roberts is pretty good CB depth

I go nuts when I read about Casserly and these other consultants that nit-wit owners hire to help them find GMs and coaches. In my opinion, these consultants are NFL has-beens whose goal is to find jobs for their buddies or the proteges of their buddies. Owners are dreaming if they think these guys are going to search far and wide for the best possible candidates out there. It's just another variant of the NFL old-boys' network.

Totally forgot about Jordan Jenkins! He seems to be a decent strong side linebacker against the run, though I'm not convinced he'll ever become a serious pass rushing threat.

Darryl Roberts is already 28, so I'm hesitant to call him a foundation. Nearing that drop off age.

  20. Jenkins & even Josh Martin should he re-sign are solid 2 way OLBs.Just neither are big time pass rushers.

I agree w you about Roberts but i like Derrick Jones & Perry Nickerson as young DBs.
