This may be a Mehta sick Halloween joke of a column, but I'm laying it out for your viewing pleasure...

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...record-mahomes-bowles-jets20181031-story.html

I wonder if this has a lot to do with our being borderline inept on offense on draft day (Sam Darnold not withstanding). This also spells out the glaring need for an offensive minded, MODERN NFL HC to run this franchise and help guide Darnold thru his early years in the NFL.

Note to Todd... Its a new NFL now and its all about the offense. If that's something you're not comfortable with, perhaps its best if you move on to doing what you do best, that would be DC.

Todd is right in his assessment, it will happen, but not when he is a HC. At some point teams are not going to carry big 300lb NTs or 250lb linebackers and will instead carry smaller, quicker players to counteract the speed on offenses. When that happens, some team will lineup in a 3 TE set and run the ball out of the full house every play and maul teams.

Take a look at the teams that are currently in first place in every division. They are all good passing teams but with the exception of the Steelers and KC they all rank in the top 10 in rushing attempts. The Rams with the best record in the NFL rank 24th in passing attempts and 1 in rushing attempts. Washington ranks 4th in rushing attempts 22 in passing attempts. Chicago 5 in rushing attempts and 17 in passing attempts. NE 6th in rushing attempts and 15th in passing attempts. KC ranks 17 in passing attempts and 20th in rushing attempts. NO 7 in rushing, 18th in passing.

NO beat MN last week. NO ran the ball 29 times and threw it 24. MN threw it 41 and ran it 22. Brees had 164 passing yards. NO won easily.

If you can run the ball, play D and get chunk yards in the passing game and pickup yards on special teams you win football games. The reality of football is games are won and lost at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. If you don't run the ball it's much harder to win the point of attack battle on O.

Yup, or a Christian okoye type rb will come along and teams will run single back 4 wide and let him take on the 220lb mlb and gain 4-6 yards a carry.
Todd’s not wrong, these things are cyclical

Agreed. The defense used to own the middle of the field. Rule changes mean that now slot receivers and TEs own the middle of the field. Defenses are adjusting-- nickle and dime defensive formations are on the field a lot more; smaller, faster linebackers that can cover and hybrid linebacker/safties are critical components to preventing passes over the middle, whereas in the past it was the safeties job to deliver punishing blows to these players and control the middle through intimidation.

At some point, some team that is tired of being a bottom-dweller in the same division with one or two elite QBs will build an offensive line full of 330-pound road graders and some big 260+ pound FB and a 240+ pound RB (or a couple of them) and just run right at these little defenders for 3.34 yards per carry. Then, in the 4th quarter of every game, they'll be able to run all over the place.

I doubt this team is going to win it all, but it will be successful enough that a few teams will try it, and every defense in the league will have to not only game plan for it, but they will have to make serious roster decisions to account for it.

This team will be heroic to us old curmudgeons. Then there will be some new rule or new CBA that will continue to change the game of football little-by-little into some sort of strange contest of acrobatics... *grumble, grumble grumble, kids today, grumble, etc.*

That's what the Titans used to do with Eddie George. I suspect it would have been more effective with a guy like Jerome Bettis.

They all rank highly in rushing attempts because they are ahead in games a lot.

Not because they believe in smash mouth football and strong defense. New England, Kansas City, New Orleans, they all have pitiful defenses and they throw the football all over the field

No doubt score plays a huge roll. Agreed really good teams don't run today as part of a "Smash Mouth" concept. The running game is still part of any good offense. The more things you force the D to focus on the more field position chunk plays will open up. The Rams are probably running the most balanced attack in the league right now.

NE D isn't pitiful and neither is NO. NE by design plays a bend don't break D. It forces teams to do two things. Make a mistake on long drives and squeeze the field when they get near the goal line so they are defending less space. Last year they were 5th in points allowed and the year before when they won the SB 1st in points allowed. They are 12th now and you can almost guarantee they will be in the top 8 by the end of the year. The Pats D is very good. You get lulled to sleep by them but at the end of the season it will seem like teams moved up and down the field against them and didn't score that many points.

Well is this really a surprise to anyone who watches the Jets under Bowles? He is a dinosaur. He lives in the past and hope it repeats, but it never does. Sure, Biggs pointed out, the best teams have great rushing components, but as BrowningNagle countered, a lot of that success is because these teams get ahead via their passing attack and then can sit back and control the game by running it. That is NOT "smashmouth football".

But there is another aspect to the best teams and their success on offense: they all have great talent on offense! Imagine that! Investing in offense! Whatta concept! This is something the Jets have failed to do for YEARS! And it's why they continue to struggle. Led by "defense first" thinking like Bowles and Rex before him, they downplay the role of offense in winning, and think they can build a "shut down defense" and win. Just look at Bowles's recent decisions to punt late in the game because "I thought our defense could hold them". WHAT???? Based upon what? How often has his defense actually rewarded that faith late in the game?

Bowles is behind the times, exposed by his own words. It's long past time to cut the cord to this anchor of an anachronism, and get a modern thinking HC.

As much as I'd LOVE to see it happen IT AINT HAPPENING.

    For many, many, many reasons.

The NFL wants lotsa passing and lotsa points scored.

    Adapt or die.

Or in Bowles case get fired. LOL

So he is officially a retard now.

Didn't I mention how the offense changed with the advent of Dan Marino? I specifically clarified the ramification of the [new] offense and how the defense had to adapt to make up for it. We are not even talking the 2010 football. That was back in the 80's. Are we back to that days? Will we? [We all know that isn't happening. Dan was doing all that without all the rules that favor the offense. Now? Good fucking luck.]

They do play a bend but don’t break defense because they’re not good enough talent wise to do anything else except hope the other team screws up as they march down the field...I guess in that sense it’s smart but they’re not a good unit all things considered

I would say they’re like the game manager unit to the rest of the Pats team (mainly offense)...just along for the ride at best

Put the Pats D on the rest of the Jets team and everyone says they’re trash, period.
