That's not what you implied when I first quoted you. You don't omit games and use those stats to "strengthen" your argument. Thats what fools like you do.
I never thought Petty would be more than a serviceable backup. Not comparable to Darnold who was considered a 1st round pick by pretty much every draft source. Anyway, like you said, a bad rookie year doesn't mean the QB is a bust.
If I'm not mistaken, 2 of Darnolds fumbles are botched hand offs. He's one of the top 2 or 3 QBs in the league when it comes to fumbles. Not bad for a QB who had fumbling issues for 1 year of college and then was labeled reckless with the football.
Here's the thing. I think most level-headed fans here were concerned that Sam would be overwhelmed with the speed and physicality of the game--and if he was, I think we'd be okay sitting him. However it's clear that he is NOT overwhelmed and can handle pretty much everything being thrown at him. Maybe the results aren't what we want to see on a consistent basis but this game is NOT too big for him. He doesn't need to sit and watch and learn. No reason to delay his development by sitting him. Gives him a head start on 2019.
Yea, but I try not to take things like that into account. I'm sure Mark fumbled on bad snaps as well. But yea, with the amount of bad snaps he's dealt with, I'm surprised he doesnt have more.
He was the man for sure. But the point is, I dont want to give Sam excuses and not Mark. The OP wanted this to be strictly factual comparison. I mean, when bringing context into it, I dont think Mark and Sam reside on the same planet.
SOJ....FANS. Nothing could be further from the truth...... O-line = so-so (and that's being kind). Receivers = decent against bottom half teams, but nothing special against top half teams. QB can't hit receivers who can't get open.
This. The game is clearly not to big for him. He's not overwhelmed, he's inexperienced. Get the learning in now.
At this point, Sam is not going to take this team on his back and will them to wins. Anyone who is expecting a Marino-like rookie season is kidding themselves. Without a solid run game we have no chance.
The issue is more the receivers than the run game. Our running game is more inconsistent than bad. Our receiving corps seems to be made up of a lot of team fist guys which is nice, but theyre just not talented enough.
Hold on ... he just completed 24 of 30 in the previous game, did he not? I guess that doesn't fit into your "inacccurate" narrative. Yesterday he was throwing passes to practice squad receivers and the goddamn punt returner in the wind ... and this coaching staff had him throwing outside the numbers all day for some reason. Off the top of my head I can think of 6 passes that were perfectly thrown balls and not completed ... including one of those INTs you're complaining about. If you want them all ... 2 contested balls that were not held by Anderson and Sterling. 2 drops by Crowell and Tomlinson. Also the non PI call on Anderson. That's 6 throws that probably should have been completions. Maybe there were a few more I don't remember. As far as comparing his INTs to Sanchez ... you must be joking. Sanchez looked like a nervous wreck and would throw horrendous drive killing INTs while the game still mattered. Sam probably has 3 or 4 of those out of 10. Why would anyone care about "INTs" that are end of the game desperation throws? That's just stat sheet garbage. In fact, I don't care if he throws 40 INTs this season. I want him to play every snap, see everything they throw at him, and keep on throwing. Rookie INTs are irrelevant for a team that has no super bowl aspirations. What you SHOULD be looking for are the things that will make him a franchise QB for the next 10+ years .... leadership, toughness, poise, resilience, and the ability to buy time and make plays under pressure .... and he has all those things in spades. If you can't see it, so be it.
I'm not discounting our receivers lackluster results at all. In fact that's why we need a strong, and yes consistent, run game to open up the passing. Our only threat is Robbie Anderson and he's easily defended if our opponents aren't stacking against the run. Team Fist!
Sam Darnold was very disappointed with himself during and after the loss, but as usual, he pointed at himself, didn't submarine the coaching staff nor his receivers, the play-calling, blame the wind conditions, the D, or blame that idiot Spencer Long. Yeah, Sam had a poor game and the everything about the game sucked and it was entirely winnable to a certain point, but comparing Darnold to Mark Sanchez is like comparing My 600 lb. life to bulimia. It's just stupid. Sam Darnold will be fine. No pouting, which is being overlooked IMO. Sanchez was composing cry baby podium letters. Short memories around here, damn. I was disappointed with the loss because I start getting dragged in like a fish with bait on a hook (don't all we lifers in momentary lapses of reason), but the loss wasn't unexpected.
It happens. I just look for progress and signs of a good quarterback overall. He's done that for the most part so far. Give him some top notch receivers and a good OL plus some experience and things will change for the better.
He was under a lot of pressure. It's surprising he wasn't sacked more. And when you don't know if the ball is going to be snapped correctly that doesn't help your concentration. Sure, he needs to improve but it's his 7th game and Minny is supposedly a SB contender. BTW: Cousins didn't look anything like a Hundred MIllion Dollar QB either.
