With the New York Jets quarterback job reportedly rookie Sam Darnold's to lose, the team is open to trading Teddy Bridgewater before the start of the regular season according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. The Jets signed the former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick to a one-year, $6 million contract in March but have littel need for him if Darnold does win the job and veteran mentor Josh McCown stays healthy. Still recovering from the devastating knee injury he suffered before the 2016 season, Bridgewater reportedly looked good during OTAs. It is unclear how much of a market exists for his services but he could help his value with a strong preseason. Despite the injury, Bridgewater is still only 25 years old and could bring both football smarts and leadership to any team he is a part of. Several teams including the division-rival Dolphins could use an upgrade to their backup situation.
A.) Sam Darnold starting as a potential Franchise QB. B.) McCown being a veteran leader of a mentor. C.) Bridgewater returning us net profit as trade bait. I'd want it no other way. Darnold starting the season off as a starter over the likes of veteran's in McCown and a very talented Bridgewater could be a great sign for this Franchise; a sign that Sam Darnold could be the real deal. Although I wouldn't trade Bridgewater to a division rival. Especially Miami. And I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to trade him before the season starts either. Because throughout the season a contending team is guaranteed to lose their starting QB due to injury. That's when & where i'd look to unload Bridgewater in return for either a draft pick, proven OLB pass rusher (Jax would be a great trading partner) and/or an upgrade on the offensive line. I can not wait to see how fired up this young team is come opening day with Sam Darnold as our opening day starter under Center.
This ought to read "Teddy B could be on the trade block" which would be no surprise to anyone. We still need to see some game action this summer from all three of these guys. Signing him was a very wise move on McCagnan's part.

yeah it's a great sign indeed. Teddy B will get some trade value for sure. with pre-season injuries and even 1st month injuries it's always possible. If mac can get back the 2nd round pick just for signing teddy and trading him, that would be an excellent mvoe for the jets. Mac is doing everything right these days. best GM the jets have had in a long time

Can't even blame Dick on this one. He just wrote a blurb about it and then websites started cherry-picking to form a sexy headline. Darnold having every shot at the job, McCown being the backup and Teddy being traded was the most likely scenario from day 1.
Yeah, I'm not buying this. Training camp hasn't even started, yet Darnold is already the front runner? It's pure speculation. If Darnold decisively wins the job, then great, but I can't see it being his by default.
Also, it’s certainly a shock that a 25 year old former 1st round pick that seems to have come all the way back from an horrific injury and looks to be ready to again be a starting QB in this league, on a 1 year contract where we’d lose him for nothing at the end of the year might get traded. Who could have imagined that?
Yep. Agreed. Though I would keep all 3. Not like McCown is a young and spry back-up. He is 39 and could easily be injured if he has to step in for Darnold and then the Jets would be back to 0 QB's.
There’s tons of articles floating around saying that the Jets could trade Bridgewater... or start him the entire season. It’s really a non-story because those were always the options, and will be there until the October 30th trade deadline. As we approach, that’s when things get interesting. Let’s say that the season until October 30th goes like this: @ DET L v MIA W @ CLE W @ JAC L V DEN W V IND W V MIN L @ CHI W 5-3. Very serviceable with this squad. Let’s suppose that through those first eight games, Bridgewater has put up over 2700 yards 14-6 TD/INT (a few tipped INTs off receivers, and a few brilliant TDs). Should the Jets trade him then? Or do they hold and try to resign him? That is when things will get interesting. Hell, even a few weeks before the trade deadline, talk will heat up like it did with Machado. IMO, it’s the same story as with Baltimore: if they can’t resign Bridgewater, then they gotta trade him. If he’s lighting it up and a Prescott, Goff, Wilson, Rodgers, goes down, you bet they’ll pay a king’s ransom to get a Bridgewater.
he's a good mentor and teddy has more value and will move on next year anyway for a new team. makes more sense to keep mccown over teddy. only way teddy would make more sense is if we were competing for a SB this year which we aren't
This plan was common sense for everyone except those who think Bridgwater is a lot better than he is.
I will go on record in saying I think it would be a huge mistake to trade Teddy away. For a team that has had SO much difficulty finding a QB, you would think they would hold him to see what they have in not only him, but also Darnold. I think Darnold will be great, but there are no guarantees. The Jets should be holding Teddy until they learn more about Sam. Would be VERY Jet-like to trade away a QB with at least moderate potential.
Bridgewater is on a 1 year deal and I don't see any scenario where he's a Jet next year regardless..If he plays well he will be gone in free-agency or trade and the Jets didn't trade up and draft Darnold 3 to sit him on the bench for 2 years.
teddy is walking after this season no matter what. he was a safety net in case we couldn't land a QB. we won't know of darnold is the future until long after teddy is gone anyway
Yeah no doubt, no way am I throwing away perhaps the most talented Jets QB room ever for a 5th round pick. Sam can learn A LOT from Teddy and McCown. If Teddy is healthy, I would love to see Darnold watch Teddy operate in the pocket and in the huddle. He is a constant professional, knows how to win games with a lack of talent and also doesn't make the big mistakes. That's something Darnold needs to still learn at the next level. Fumbles hindered his play in college and not making the right reads, that can bury a young QB.
I like Teddy. I also know a 300lbs man falling at you, or worse, is hard enough to withstand, let alone with a repaired knee. So if the plan is to get a return on their investment, they should trade him before he sees too much game action. He could be fine, but the odds are always hard to beat. On the other hand, scary as it is, he may be the best option to start, initially. They're definitely in a unique situation, with 3 potential starters. No news there. If Darnold is at least as good as Mark Sanchez year 1 and 2, he could get a year or two of good performance, at minimum. I know, comparing him to Sanchez is hardly an appealing barometer, but that's the point. Unfortunately, Bowles is not rex. Which is an absurd statement. You know, fuck this post.
