My suspicion is that they expected/hoped to get either Rosen or Josh Allen. I have a very hard time seeing this front office/coach tandem trading up all those picks to draft a 6' Mayfield who's running around stuff likely won't work in the NFL. It just doesn't seem like the kind of guy the Jets would be targeting and that's in addition to the very real possibility he might not work out.

Thankfully though the Browns..... What a break the Jets got in getting Darnold. I railed against the trade-up pretty good and who knows maybe Rosen and 3 2nd round picks will still look way better a few years down the road but right now its looking like a godsend. I'm very optimistic about Darnold working out well at the moment. He probably won't be an all time great but I could definitely see him turning into a Matthew Stafford-esque guy and that is more than adequate to win in the NFL with imho.

I'm near positive Rosen was going to be the choice had Darnold been off the board. I thought Macc insinuated that in a post draft interview. They traded up thinking Darnold / Rosen / Mayfield were all suitable franchise QB candidates.

I got to tell you this, there are a lot of things we Jets fans seem to continuously worry about, right or wrong. But what Cleveland was really thinking when they went with Mayfield versus Danrnold at one should not be one of them. Who the hell cares. I'm sure they saw a better fit for them with Baker, but quite frankly it was a blessing for Sam and hopefully for us as well. It is clear that Sam and or Baker were the first two choices for the Jets and they had Rosen probably as the third acceptable choice.
The way the Jets leadership looked, ear to ear smiles when Cleveland took Baker and then the Giants passed on the QB tells me they never, ever expected Sam to be there at 3.
There are no guarantees but we might be on the right side of the track for once. Let us hope the CS doesn't screw up this NFL gift.

Agreed.. Its not very often we can associate the words "Luck" and "Jets" in the same football conversation..

From all that I have read, it seemed like the Jets assumed the draft was gonna go 1. Darnold 2.Rosen/Barkley and then they would take Mayfield. We already know that Rosen was less preferred than Darnold based off them passing on him and they liked Darnold more than anyone else.. What we don't know is where was Mayfield on Mac's draft board? We may never know who was their #2 QB after Darnold. Therefore, I think the only thing we can definitively say is that Jets traded up for either Mayfield or Rosen because they thought one or both of those players would fall to them. If you want to go off the speculation that Mayfield was the Jets target, I would say their board was 1. Darnold 2. Mayfield 3. Rosen.

Jets beat reporter Connor Hughes in an AMA on Reddit, says the Jets draft board was...

    Darnold
    Mayfield
    Rosen

Well it certainly was not Rosen ...

    I think Bowles/Mac liked Mayfield

Cleveland is starting Tyrod Taylor but I think Dorsey will push for Baker Time in No Time...kid will romp for them

This is still a win win for the Jets too..Sam is tough and has a high ceiling imo

Thread over. You trade up to 3 cause you will be happy with 1 of 3 QB's.

Based on all the stuff that has been put out there it make sense, but how does Connor Hughes know for sure?

The next question is why were they not as high on Rosen, the most NFL ready QB? I am not criticizing, but I want to know what their rationale was. I mean it seems like many teams passed on him for a reason. Was it the injuries or perhaps his attitude? Or did they not think his on the field stuff was as good as everyone has been saying?

We have the article from the war room that stated the jets were happy when the browns took mayfield even though they still felt darnold was going 2nd overall to the giants or a team would jump them for darnold. We know darnold was the 1 but if baker was the 2, I feel the jets wouldn't have been happy with the mayfield pick like they were especially since they thought darnold was going 2 meaning they would have had to settle for their 3rd QB. I cant see them being happy about that. It makes me feel mayfield wasnt in their top 2 and that's why they were happy when he was taken because it guaranteed one of their top 2 picks. Mayfield could have been their 3rd but I feel like rosen or allen was their 2 based on their reaction when he was drafted.

Well never quite know for sure but the important thing is darnold was our top QB and we got him and that's all that matters.

Somebody in that Cleveland org made a late push for Mayfield and I'm guessing it was Haslam. They were settled on Darnold for quite some time until those stories started to break about them suddenly shifting to Mayfield. Dorsey then tried to lie himself out of it by claiming Mayfield was their guy for the past 5 weeks but everybody knew it was BS.

I'm still shocked the Giants were so stupid as to draft Barkley (very good player but guys like him come around often, like Dalvin Cook last year) Eli is on the downswing and they really needed Darnold

Why would Jackson even be in the conversation? Unless he was going to replace Robby Anderson

Really they wanted to ensure they were getting 1 of Darnold/Mayfield/Rosen. No real interest in Allen. They looked at him and thought this was too big a project. Darnold was #1 but they wrote him off as NYG or Cle was taking him. Mayfield was the best of what was left until Cleveland changed their mind. Rosen they would've taken had the worst case scenario presented itself but I don't think they were looking forward to dealing with this personality. Plus the fact that he seems so slight and brittle. Teammates don't seem to like him. There was something there that caused him to drop late

I’m going to say this is 100% the exact way this played out.

    Well said, Sir.

I think Rosen got hurt a bit by the media blitz that his reps came up with to counter the idea that he was interested in things other than football. He was not well-coached in how to present himself. He did come across as a guy passionate about football but he also took the opportunity to speak about a bunch of other things that were on his mind as well and that blunted the impact of the core football question.

I'd have told him to basically zip it other than talking about football, since that was the point of the whole endeavor. I think it would have been fine to answer questions about the hot tub and Elite 11/Dilfer thing but going beyond that just reinforced the idea that Rosen has a lot on his mind. If you're spending a high 1st rounder on a guy and committing $30M to him in the process you really want to know that football is all he is thinking about. At least I would.

According to their happiness after Cleveland took Mayfield it would suggest they had another QB besides darnold rated above him.

I don't think there was any sign of that leading up to the draft. Maybe at some point they had Rosen ahead of him but that was earlier in the process. Betting it was a firm 1.Darnold 2.Mayfield for at least the last month of the process

But I mean who know. All speculation. They definitely go Rosen if Darnold is gone at #2 to the Giants. While I love him as a pure passer he would worry me coming to NY with his personality. Especially if got too political or smarmy

It seems to be that way. I know caring about playing football seems like a necessity for a player, especially one drafted so high. However, that doesn't mean they can't produce on the field. Curtis Martin was never a guy in love with the game of football and he became an all time great. Getting penalized for not giving the expected responses to questions might be overblown and many teams many have passed on the next Aaron Rodgers. Only time will tell.

I think more than anything the Jets were desperate to get things right and went with the consensus #1 pick. Nothing wrong with that, but we need to put him a position to succeed.
