Discussion in 'Draft' started by GasedAndConfused, Mar 26, 2018.

?

If Rosen and Darnold are gone, who would you pick with the 3rd pick?

  1. Mayfield

    63.2%
  2. Allen

    36.8%

If the MMQB report is true and the Browns take Allen at #1, you have to assume the Giants take Darnold at #2, if that happens, do Jets fans want Rosen or Mayfield? To me it would be a slam dunk for Rosen, but I don't think it would be that simple.

Rosen, best pure passer in this draft and less likely to bust in the NFL.

If the question is “Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield?” my answer is “yes”

when he left texas tech because he felt he shouldn't have had to compete for the starting job in 2014 (webb and mahomes) and sat out the 2014 season due to the transfer. the QB he then had to beat out was a bum who went undrafted and is on a practice squad currently

Nice! I thought the Giants loved Darnold though. If he falls into their laps they will take him and surely not hand him to the Jets. Plus the compensation takes away the Jets 3rd and 4th round picks. That is a lot with Rosen still on the board. Still, if that happened, I would not complain.

There are definite flaws in Mayfield’s game but criticizing his competitiveness is just off base

i'm sure they do, but it's a matter of need vs want. Gettleman isn't the type to use a 1st rounder on a guy who will sit for years. especially as a 1st year GM with the giants looking to turn around a team that won 2 games in 2017. It makes more sense and fits his MO to take a playmaker and the best player in the draft plus get 3 extra picks, then it does to take a player that won't help the team until 2020 at the earliest
It's not really criticizing. it's exactly what he did. He felt eh earned the job based on his 2013 play and shouldn't have had to compete for it in 2014 and when he was told he had to compete for it, he transferred out of texas tech and sat out the 2014 season to then compete in 2015 with a bum QB to win the job at oklahoma.

I'd call what Mayfield did "smart" - he knew he wasn't going to overcome the coach's decision, so he he took the only option available to him. That shows me his belief in his abilities, to go some place new and start over. You see it as "running from", I see it as "running to".

running away form an open competition and sitting for a year is far from smart in my book. How's he going to win an open competition in the NFL. if say miami drafts him (that's where he is going in my mock) and he can't beat tannehill out, is he going to bitch for a trade? sit out a season? a true competitor will go anywhere and try to win a job.

Not true. Didn't Brees "run" from SD and win? How about Unitas leaving Pittsburgh? Foles leaving Philly, St. Louis, and KC before going to back to Philly? How about Keenum leaving Houston, St. Louis, Houston, LA, before finally going to Minn?

Coaches get preconceived ideas of who they like, and it's often impossible to get them to look past their bias (or their "loyalty"), and when I player knows this, the smart thing to do is to go somewhere else.

I hope its true. Allen might make a lot of sense for them if they want Tyrod to start for 2-3 years.
    Your haterism is showing.

Brees was let go by the team due to the salary cap and rivers sitting behind him and a huge injury.

at the NFL level things are different then college, you have a salary cap which forces teams to not be able to stack talent like say in the NCAA or even MLB to a point. Mayfield choosing to sit out a eyar becuase he didn't want to compete in college is a huge difference. lets say powell came out this offseason and said it's BS we signed crowell, i shouldn't have to compete, i've done enough to earn the starting job and i'll sit for a year until you trade me away. I'm pretty sure jet fans would be telling him to GTFO right now, myself included. That's what mayfield did.

pointing out what someone did isn't hating. it's not hating on rosen to say he had concussion issues, or hating on darnold saying he had turnover issues. it's called evaluation, but your instant response of calling it hating, goes to show where your mind is

And that's fine, it's the fans right to do that, but it's the players right - competitive drive - to go where he has the best chance to play.

the best players, will win the job though. You think brady isn't the starter on any team in the NFL? Keenum didn't shy away form competing with bradford. I never heard keenum say Minn should trade me after the coach said he could be benched. The best players will fight and win. It's not like mayfield had some crazy competition. he had a true freshman (which rarely start) and an oft injured QB (who went in the 3rd round) he had to beat out.

Look, Mayfield had played and succeeded - albeit a limited sample size - and then his coach says, we'll I don't think you proved anything to me. Now Mayfield could've stayed and tried to prove himself, as you prefer, but it was clear that his coach was skeptical at best and didn't show any appreciation for Mayfield's abilities. In that case, I think he was absolutely right to go where he could be appreciated, and it took guts to do this because he wasn't guaranteed that job either. Moreover, given how h plays the game, how could question his competitive spirit?
