because you can't teach talent. attitudes change, work ethic changes, intangibles change, footwork changes, but you can't change the gifts you are physically born with. Allen has pretty rare arm talent. Trust the "football guys" more then the stats boys on the forums. Rex was one of the best DCs in the NFL for a long time. He might suck at offense, but i guarantee he can spot a QB that would have kept him up all night trying to plan against.
Football people have also been endorsing the best QBs to have recently come out. They endorsed Wentz heavy when many on this board were pointing to bad competition and limited offense as reasons to pass. I'd say the track record of football people are a hell of a lot better than message board posters.
yeah totally allens fault he can't complete passes stop looking at college stats and comparing a spread offense QB throwing to wide open WRs (80% of mayfields throws were to wide open WRs per PFF) to a QB running a pro offense with a crap o-line and crap WRs
In addition to the arm, size, athleticism and intelligence, Allen also has the intangibles that football people like. Leadership, work ethic, teamwork, personality.......you can't teach that either and Allen checks all those boxes.
the only knock on allen is stats, which are heavily skewed due to lack of talent around him (at WR and o-line) as well as running a pro style offense which always produces lower stats then a spread offense like baker ran. The thing about allen is what you see is what you get. With baker there isn't any film of him doing anything remotely close he will need to do to be successful in the NFL, the QBs that came from the spread offense in the NFL and were successful are few and far between and they all have a better arm and are bigger then mayfield. Sadly too many people are looking at college stats which are meaningless. perfect example, barkely is the best RB in the draft and best RB to come out in a long time. he ran for 1329 yards in 2017 making him 26th in college this year. penny led the NCAA with 2248 yards and is a 2nd-3rd round prospect. college stats are meaningless
So the people who do this for a living or who played the game, most like Allen and the concern is noobs are divided?
You know our bar is set low when I'll be happy with ANY of the top four prospects to just give a sense of hope that he'll pan out.....
Yeah. Honestly @legler82 and @Br4d are my two quarterback gurus. legler82 started talking about Wentz well before anybody did. I heard Wentz name from legler's posts. He also brought up Mahomes well before anybody did. On the other hand Br4d predicted how the QB's would and to which team the year Manziel was picked. legler82 is pro Allen. Br4d doesn't like him much. I am personally confused. But legler is the guru for me. If he likes Allen that tells me not to be depressed draft night if Jets pick Allen.
I've seen the dude play in person. For every incredible throw he makes, he'll throw 2 or 3 horrific ones. The only way I would draft Allen is if you could sit him for 2-3 years and even then I don't think he'd be ready.
that's consistency which goes back to mechanics and spending a lot of time running for his life. Things that can be fixed with coaching. also the 1 film i broke down of him had like 29 passes and only 3 were bad passes and 2 were bad decisions. and it was one of his worst games. i'll take 24 good passes out of 29 all day especially being one of his worst games and all the issues are easily fixable.
Tall, big hands, looks great in shorts, and has a rocket for an arm... In all seriousness, Allen has every tool you need to be a successful QB in the NFL, he just has to put it all together. This is a common theme in the NFL Draft, GMs and coaches overestimate their own abilities to develop a player in the NFL, this is why Allen is ranked so high. EDIT: If he doesn't land on the coaching staff the kid will flame out in 2-3 years.
Thats exactly how I feel ... I've warmed up to Allen a little bit ... still prefer Rosen or Darnold first.
exactly. I don't think many are touting allen as the best QB ever, but more of the lesser of 2 evils between him and mayfield. Most of the allen supporters here would prefer darnold or rosen. If we can land darnold i'd be estatic. If we can land rosen i'd be happy, if we wind up with allen I won't complain. If we draft mayfield i'll be rooting for him, but also hoping teddy's knee holds up because we will need him. I wonder how mayfield will react when he can't beat anyone out for the job his whole career. the kid just lacks the talent to be an NFL QB. if he even stuck around as a career backup i'd be amazed. not how you want to feel about your 3rd overall pick. it'll sting even more when allen goes to buffalo and lights us up twice a year for the next decade
i'd prefer to see Mayfield on the Bills over Darnold, Rosen, Allen and Jackson. I don't care about the, "oh he's got swagger, he's so competitive!!!!" that stuff is a dime a dozen IMO, a QB like that comes out every year. The Mayfield fans don't see to really talk about his skill-sets and how that will translate. Just more stats. If I wanted a "winner" like Mayfield, I would've taken Watson last year.
I'd want no part of Rosen at all. The reasons I like Allen are the reasons I don't like Rosen. Intangibles mean everything at QB. If it came to Mayfield or Rosen I'd go Mayfield without a second thought.
