We're at a time in the NFL season when the good teams should be emerging. This weekend is the first of December, usually a time when the playoff teams take shape.

So why is it that we have more teams going in the opposite direction?

The last weekend of November saw the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars all lose. The San Diego Chargers, who looked like the best team in the league in their last two games, suddenly were pushed to the limit at home by a bad Oakland Raiders team, needing a questionable fumble call to help win the game.

So what's happening?

What's happening is that there is not much separation between the good and the bad. A bad break here or there and a good team can lose -- to anybody.

That's what makes the NFL so good. But it's also what makes it so frustrating. Just when we think we might have a grasp on what's happening, we have days like Sunday to remind us that we don't.

The good news is that the NFL playoffs will be as wide open as ever. Last season, we had a sixth seed win three road games to get to the Super Bowl and then win it. The Steelers run was unprecedented.

It can happen again.

No team is without flaws.

The Colts can't stop the run.

The Bears can't throw it well enough.

The Cowboys have an inexperienced quarterback, even if he is playing well.

The Chargers have secondary issues.

The Ravens are still uncertain on offense.

On and on it goes. They all have warts and that's what makes this league as unpredictable as ever. It also means there is more change in the CBS SportsLine.com Power Rankings than there is divorce in Hollywood (What's the over-under on Tom-Kat? A year? Two? Or just under 10 as Tom Cruise did with Nicole Kidman, so he didn't have to pay?)

There are two certainties about this week's rankings. The Steelers, thanks to their no-show job at Baltimore on Sunday, are officially dead. There will be no repeat.

The other definite is that the Detroit Lions look like they will be staying in the bottom spot for a long, long time.

They really do stink.

Matt Millen, the TV booth is calling you back. Of course, he might not have a choice.

Let's just be thankful we're on to December. That's when the good teams emerge every season.

It's just that the last weekend of November has us wondering if that will be the case again this season or is the craziness only beginning?

Bring on December.

1 Colts ? Trends 1
They are the elite of this league. The offense is good enough to win the Super Bowl, even if the defense isn't. But once Bob Sanders comes back, they'll be good enough on that side of the ball, too.
2 Ravens ? Trends 3
Of all the teams at the top, they look like the team that is playing the best. That defense is starting to look like the 2000 unit.
3 Chargers ? Trends 4
OK, so they got away with one against the Raiders. They were flat after playing back-to-back tough road games -- and winning both.
4 Patriots ? Trends 5
Look who's creeping back to the top. This Patriots team will be a factor come playoff time.
5 Bears ? Trends 2
At some point in their season, they will have to throw the ball better. All the great defense will mean nothing if they can't throw it.
6 Cowboys ? Trends 7
With Tony Romo, they're a legit Super Bowl contender. The defense also seems to be growing each week. They can take a firm grasp of the division by beating the Giants this week.
7 Broncos ? Trends 6
The quarterback change is coming, but is that really the right thing to do? We?ll know in the next two weeks.
8 Seahawks ? Trends 8
It took them some time to get going Monday night, but they finally did. Having Shaun Alexander and Matt Hasselbeck back makes this a much different team.
9 Saints ? Trends 12
Drew Brees and that passing game will make them a threat each and every week. They're the surprise of the league right now.
10 Chiefs ? Trends 14
They can run the football, but the key for this team is the improved defense. The pass rush has made big strides.
11 Panthers ? Trends 9
What is it with this team this season? Just when they look like they're getting it going, they lose a game like they did Sunday. They're not good enough on offense.
12 Bengals ? Trends 16
It appears Carson Palmer and the passing game are coming to life at just the right time. Two consecutive road victories has the Bengals back as a playoff threat.
13 Jaguars ? Trends 10
This team is way too inconsistent to be a playoff team. They've lost four games to the Texans, the Redskins and the Bills, which is killer.
14 Jets ? Trends 17
At 6-5, with a tissue-soft schedule, this can be a playoff team. Who could have imagined that?
15 Giants ? Trends 11
They're in a bad run right now. That makes Sunday's game at home against the Cowboys almost a must-win if they're to have any chance to win the division.
16 Falcons ? Trends 13
At 5-6, they're floundering. Why? They can't pass the football. It's really easy to understand.
17 Dolphins ? Trends 20
Four consecutive victories has this team thinking playoffs again. Credit goes to Nick Saban for keeping this thing together.
18 Vikings ? Trends 22
If they can play offense like they did against the Cardinals, they might push for a playoff spot. They're not done yet.
19 Rams ? Trends 23
At 5-6, they're still alive. But they need to get more out of that offense, especially with the defense giving up so many yards.
20 Eagles ? Trends 15
This season is done. They're playing for 2007 now. The biggest concern has to be the defense. They can't stop the run.
21 49ers ? Trends 18
Mike Nolan made the right decision to go for the field goal late against the Rams. But if they finish one game out of the playoffs, it's a decision that will be ripped for a long time.
22 Bills ? Trends 24
They're starting to play better, which is a good sign for the future. J.P. Losman is starting to show progress, which might make him the quarterback for a while.
23 Steelers ? Trends 19
It's over. There will be no repeat. It's been a bad, bad season. Terrible Towels are literal in Pittsburgh now.
24 Titans ? Trends 25
That was a heck of a comeback against the Giants, something to build on. Vince Young's magical fourth quarter is a good sign for the future.
25 Redskins ? Trends 28
Jason Campbell has his first victory. It won't be his last. He didn't do much against the Panthers, but it will be good for his confidence. The defense is playing better.
26 Packers ? Trends 21
This is a team that is making strides. They're starting three rookies on the offensive line, which is a good sign for the future.
27 Texans ? Trends 26
The offense isn't scoring enough points on the road, which is a sign of a young team. The secondary is also giving up a lot of big plays.
28 Buccaneers ? Trends 27
They offer little resistance on defense, which is shocking considering the logo on the helmet. They must address that side of the ball in the offseason.
29 Browns ? Trends 29
Getting shut out at home is not a good thing for this team. Maybe changing coordinators wasn't the answer after all.
30 Cardinals ? Trends 30
They fired Dirk Koetter at ASU. Dennis Green isn't far behind. This team is a major disappointment.
31 Raiders ? Trends 31
For a brief moment, it looked like they would upset the Chargers. But then Aaron Brooks started throwing it to the other guys. Now watch them fold it up.
32 Lions ? Trends 32
Do they even show up anymore? They don't have the talent to compete. Heads need to roll in the front office.
