Taken from today's NYDN: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...lbag-feel-qb-baker-mayfield-article-1.3889539 Hmmmm... Mehta saying in print what a lot of us have been saying since the season ended. Hack and Petty both should have been released by now if for no other reason, giving them the chance to continue what's left of their careers elsewhere.
This is a business... all QBs under contract stay until the Jets have no use for them. Right now Teddy’s knee is still a big question mark. a 39yo q.b is a big question mark. A newly drafted q.b is a big question mark. If I’m gm, I’m not releasing anybody until I am absolutely certain of the opening day roster.
Much ado about nothing. Both will probably be cut at some point in the preseason if we draft a QB and Teddy stays healthy..neither deserve any special treatment and aren't gonna be hot on the free agent market or starting for anyone.
Everyone knew Hackenberg was a "project" when he was drafted. So why is it so crazy that the Jets are treating him like the project he is? He still has "value" to the Jets. He knows the team and organization, the playbook, the coaches know him. He could develop into an acceptable backup for the team. Bridgewater may not make it into the regular season depending on his health, or maybe any of the QBs get hurt, who knows? Things happen. At a minimum, no decision about him needs to (or should be) made until final cut down day. Then the Jets can decide whether it is worth it to use a roster spot on him vs. keeping a special teamer who shows promise.
This column spells trouble for Maccagnan, and not just because of Hackenberg. Some of us believe Mehta's M.O. is to glom onto a disgruntled person or faction inside One Jets Drive and use his column to further the agenda of that person or faction. In return, he gets fed inside information that makes him look good. Look at all the criticisms of Maccagnan in that column: 1. "People in the organization have told me that they think Maccagnan is concerned about getting criticized for whiffing on Hackenberg if he were cut..." 2. "Some folks in the building believe Maccagnan is just an idealist. He might truly believe that Hackenberg will develop into a solid player one day. Unfortunately, this is a fast-moving business that comes with hard deadlines. There isn’t a five-year window to allow a project quarterback to develop." 3. "Maccagnan has also expressed concerns about cutting drafted players because of future criticism. He’s concerned that it will reflect poorly on him if a player cut by the Jets flourishes elsewhere, according to sources." Unless you assume that Mehta just makes this shit up, it sounds like there is an anti-Maccagnan fifth column inside One Jets Drive. In other words, some person or group is trying to grease the skids for Maccagnan.
If they learned anything from Fitzpatrick, it’s that you can’t trust a journeyman qb to be the same guy year after year.
I was against the Hack pick from the start, but it's hard to take anything written by Manish seriously.
Apparently we've had a Manish reset because his opinions were in the ballpark of truth with the Wilkerson situation.
If he wasn't good enough to get snaps week 17 of 2017 he has no business being on any NFL roster. Super trash.
Why would you cut Hackenberg now? From many accounts, he’s improved... Might as well see what he has in camp even if the odds are unlikely he makes the roster... Almost like Mehta wants him released and to succeed on another team so he can further bash the Jets. Weird piece all around...
I know it, you know it.. Macc evidently hasn't learned that lesson yet. $10mil for a 39yo QB when you didn't have to pay it seemed a bit foolish to me. I could understand if Macc was actually in a bidding war but this is the second time he's bidded against himself. I don't get it but then again, they don't pay me to throw other people's cash around either. Fitz2.0 was the biggest heist since Lufthansa. I'm praying McCown at least gives us some ROI. If nothing else, actually BE the bridge QB/mentor to our new Kid Qb.
That's not true in the delusional world of Jet land, he clearly was drafted and expected to be a franchise QB in his first year, aren't all 2nd round QBs...lol
Hack has made $2.7 million in the last two years and has barely been hit during that entire time. I'm not going to feel sorry for him. The situation with Petty was completely different - he had actually put his body on the line for the team (I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten up from that Suh/Wake hit), so I was happy he at least got a shot to show that he wasn't an NFL quarterback.
Who cares if there is an anti-MacCagnan militia running around the building? Every bit of criticism he's gotten, he's earned. And Hack is a prime example.
