Um yup.... Chris Johnson needs to say playoffs or we are clearing house. Light a fire under their asses. These dudes are just all OK with mediocrity.
Excellent point. I'm sure Maccagnan is completely apathetic to wanting to make the playoffs. He needs the owner to tell him he wants to make the playoffs. The owner also tells mac to wipe his ass or he wouldn't know he had to do that either.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2018/01/no_playoff_mandate_for_jets_in_2018_says_christoph.html This just makes everyone go into the off season like fuck it. We have jobs playoffs or not. Do you see winning teams doing this?
I just want accountability. I understand playoffs aren't going to happen in the first year or two. I am not an unrealistic person. But we are going on year 4 here and it is looking more and more like the same old shit about to go down.
Yes, you don't sign several big free agents, trade for other vets and generally make one/two year moves without the expectation that you're going to win.
No, just pointing out that the mandate in 2015 to be competitive at all costs is why the Jets stink today. Well, alongside yet another regime that has trouble picking players in the draft.
Well, the real issue is that the Jets haven't had someone in charge who really knows football and how to build a winning team since the days of Werblin and Ewbank. If Macc even has a plan - and frankly he must have one - it hasn't worked. The Johnsons really need to step back and look for a guy to build this team and given him complete control to do it. But the problem is, would they even know a guy like that? Until that step is taken successfully, the Jets will be like a blind squirrel looking for acorns.
This. The point is that the mandate should never be "make the playoffs now." The mandate should always be "win a Super Bowl as quickly as reasonably possible." We do all kinds of nonsense personnel moves in order to be just good enough to get the 6th seed in the playoffs. We NEVER do the necessary steps to be a consistent Super Bowl contender (ie, acquire a young Hall of Fame caliber QB).
Parcells knew how to build a contender. He just had a very strong mandate to go from 1-15 to Super Bowl in 2 years due to Leon Hess's terminal illness. He almost pulled it off and then the pieces started to come unglued with Vinny's achilles in '99.
Playoff mandate is a pretty poor idea. I understand where your coming from, but an ultimatum like that wouldnt work. What if they draft Darnold, win 10 games, but miss out on the playoffs? Should either coach or GM be fired in that situation? Of course not. Mac is going to get fired (if he does) because he is bad at picking players and managing the offseason, not because of some silly mandate.
The real issue here is nobody wants to play for the fucking New York Jets, and for a good reason too, a place for players to go to die, not thrive, all this money and nobody to give it to, good thing we have Joshy boy back for almost double what we paid him last year! The franchise is saved! Long live the King!
