As much as I’m a hater I think he will be back in 2018, and I’m not that mad. They will give him a modest extension to not make him lame duck. I’m ok with it in the sense we won’t be ready to win in 2018 so who the F cares about Todd Gump going 4-12. But I dislike it because he obviously has zero ability to develop a QB (which is all that matters in the modern NFL) and we might as well get a guy in here who can do that over a stopgap known loser coach.....
I don't see anybody who can be picked up to replace Bowles. Let's hope that at least this new HC is an Offensive type. Enough of the Defensive head coaches, they don't know when to go for it, instead of just punting it away. Maybe they will also know how to call time outs, but most of all, how to get QB's to step up.
Bowels has zero ability to develop anyone. He's a defensive guy and a former defensive safety. Yet all of that sucks. He does not warrant coming back and should be fired.
Looking at the bigger picture, we need to get some genuine talent on the field and then it will become much more evident as to whether or not he is the coach of the future. For years, this organization has lacked proper scouting and roster-assembly above all else. The head coach, while important, is only one element in creating a winning franchise. How about giving him a chance with a decent O-line and a young quarterback who isn't an ancient journeyman?
The arguments for keeping Bowles: - He's stoic and doesn't make CIRCUS comments. - Gosh darn it, the players like him. The arguments for firing Bowles - Horrible game manager. - Defense, which is his side of the ball, is getting progressively worse each year. - He coaches scared.
The only reason I want a new coach is so we can get an offensive mind at the top to groom our next QB. I do not want Bowles doing that and clearly Rex was not the right guy for Sanchez. Can you imagine the 2009/10 Jets record with a QB playing like McCown played this year?
I'm not at all saying that Bowles is the answer, but... Bowles was supposed to "develop" Hack or Petty? Petty and Hack would be winners under BB or Tomlin? Brady and Big Ben would be disappointments under Bowles? "Obviously has zero ability"??? I'm not Mr. X's and O's, but I've seen many guys play the position well and many, MANY others who could not. How many legit franchise guys have there been this century? Maybe 20 or 30? Of those, how many can we point to the head coach and say, This guy was the difference between success and failure? I'm willing to be persuaded, but I'm very skeptical.
I hate having to play devils advocate here, but I do feel compelled. When it comes to QB's if you put shit in, you get shit out. Mac drafted two turds as QB's and that's exactly what Toilet put out. My point is, Mac is very much complicit in this QB failure. It's not like Mac gave Toilet two Peyton Manning's and he squandered them both? However, there's a million other reasons why Toilet should be shit canned. I could, but don't care to get into it? I absolutely agree, Toilet should be fired. We are 3 seasons deep into this regime and Toilet has zero success. Coaching is a results oriented business.
Who knew defensive head coaches are the ones developing the QB's? Why the hell do we have Morton and Bates? Thankfully the TGG academics have cleared that up. FIRE BOWS HIRE MERTONBATS! START THE ENGINES! Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
Maybe that's the problem: Who ever heard of "Defensive Head Coaches"? Last I knew HEAD Coaches were responsible for ALL facets of the team. I wonder if the consultants told Woody that when he hired Bowles? Maybe it's time we got a HEAD Coach who CAN coach ALL aspects fo the team.
If you eliminate the offensive side of the ball entirely and just focus on their defense and how lousy they've played under Toilet, how unimaginative his schemes are, how he constantly gets out coached, how he never makes defensive adjustments in-game, how undisciplined his players are, how they rack up penalties and seem to always have penalties at the worst possible time in games, how veterans ignore him and don't respect him that alone is more than reason enough to sh*t can his smug ass. The best thing you can say about toilet is he eliminated the Rex Ryan jailbreak blitz on 3rd and a mile. Toilet is so bad he doesn't even warrant a "Joe Must Go" type campaign to rid him from this team.
It was impossible for Bowles to not check the single box Chris Johnson laid out for him. Bowles had only ONE job to do this year. That was make sure the team was competitive. Again, it was clearly stipulated that the team be "competitive" and winning would not be a criteria Bowles would be judged by. With a bar that low, anybody could have surpassed those requirements for an extension. Now the length of that extension is what we should be speculating over. If Rex got 6 years, Bowles gets 6 years unless he fails to keep the team "competitive". That amounts to a 3 year extension which isn't so bad as long as the last 2 years aren't guaranteed. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to require Winning as a stipulation for job retention in future dealings with HC's of the NYJ's. That's assuming winning still is the goal instead of simply competing. Then again, its always about tickets, concessions and swag sales..
I find it hard to watch the Jets these days. Yes, I was excited to watch McCown and the offense this year, but its depressing knowing that will be another 1 hit wonder. Nothing about this team says sustainable success right now. I'd say I am excited about our future wide receivers and the two young safeties and thats about it. Add that to the fact that Bowles hasnt taken this team to the playoffs its really hard to stomach an extension for him. His uninspired post game interviews and the giving up in the fourth quarter makes me just not wanna watch until Bowles finally gets fired.
Is it me or most all the threads as of late, regardless of the title, circle around the same issue with two AND ONLY two opposing points of discussion resulting in apparently the same root cause. A - Does this team lack sufficient talent to be competitive (i.e.: incompetent GM drafts) or is our HC and staff incompetent? This topic has been discussed at nausea and we only just began. B - Why do our drafted QBs all seem to suck (i.e.: incompetent GM drafts )or who screwed up for not developing a QB (i.e.: incompetent HC staff) Well, call me crazy but sounds like we either have a GM problem or a coaching problem or both. Yet we want to extend them one year as we draft our much needed FQB. Is this a good plan for the leadership to pursue? Apparently we either draft good enough to be mediocre or coach good enough to be mediocre. Neither approach helps us with better drafts in the future, never mind improving. Will Mac and Bowles get better? Do they have what it takes? Really now......what am I missing?
Maybe he should send that memo up to his GM. Another reason to get rid of both of them because neither is on the same sheet of music. We have no offense so let's keep drafting defensive talent. We got a defensive coach but he can't recognize what an opposing offense is doing. The GM see all this and drafts BPA. Maybe we should try and get the BCA...best coach available.
I would finally ditch this team if they gave Bowles 3 more years. That would be suicide even Idzik would gas up the airplane and fly a Bowels must go banner. Rex got 6 year because they thought they could get the magic back. Bowles hasn't had any magic to begin with. All phases of the Jets stink and that is on him and him alone.
But the majority of fans and experts looked at this roster and said we would not be competitive at all. The fact that we were in almost every game all year was borderline shocking for most of us.
Great point! I have always thought that the "be competitive" goal/criteria is absurd!! While most teams set the super bowl or at least the Jim Mora "playoffs" as a goal, the Johnsons literally tell Bowles and the jets "ah, just try to be competitive, not worried about your record." By setting the bar that low, no wonder the team is never in the playoffs. It's about damn time the jets got an owner with the balls to call out a loser coach who looks like a zombie on the sidelines and a GM that drafted only 2 offensive linemen in 3 drafts (both in round 5) but delivered us Hack, Lee, Devin Smith and Mauldin with high picks. Oh, let's not forget the good value he negotiated in the Fitzpatrick, Revis, and Wilkerson contracts.
