I disagree. Mac has made mistakes, but all GMs do, and another rookie GM is likely to repeat some of the same mistakes that Mac has made, as well as some new ones. Overall, Mac has done a lot more good than bad, is the best GM we've had in a long time (not saying much I realize), and has had to work under a screwed up org chart and with a HC he had no control over. With a different HC and OC the last 3 years and a system built around his strengths, Petty could have developed into a quality starter. The roster could look radically different if Mac had been allowed to hire his own HC and he had gone with an offensive HC.

As long as the Johnsons are making the hires and calling the shots, the chances are that no GM is gonna do really well, but Mac certainly has a better chance than any rookie GM. I believe that he has won some trust and respect from Woody and Chris Johnson, and they may be more inclined to listen to him and let him call the shots than they would a rookie GM.

Nonsense. If a HC preferred answering to a clueless doofus like Woody or Chris Johnson over an experienced and knowledgeable football man like Mac, then they're too stupid to be desirable as our new HC. They would know that if they were doing their job well, and working with their boss (GM) to build a new foundation, that the boss would have their back, but with capricious, ignorant bosses like the Johnsons, know that they could go in all kinds of wild directions.

Mac hasn't failed at his job. He has added a lot of good young talent to this team. Any HC being hired by Mac would know that Mac would supply him with good young players.

    Look around the league NC.
It's been repeated over and over, many good organizations do not have a linear structure between HC and GM.

The reason being, it's two completely different roles that can and should be measured independently.
In most cases GM's come up from either accounting/legal or scouting backgrounds. Rarely if ever do they have coaching backgrounds.
Why should they evaluate the coaching performance, or even be qualified to direct the coaches?
Who says GM's are higher up the organization ladder? It's just a different role.

Furthermore, if a GM is over the HC, it can create a conflict of interest.
ie, a GM trying to force a HC to play a guy who shouldn't be played, just because the GM drafted them.
Or the GM could try firing a HC for poor results, deflecting accountability for not providing good players, ie the players are fine the coaches are the problem, etc..

When not linear, there is no conflict of interest, there is a clear division of responsibilities, and accountability can be placed on each individual independent of the other.
You also can establish a vision and identity separate from personalities, which transcends the individual, and helps sustain organizational stability. The Steelers are a perfect example.

The truth is, we should be looking at younger free agents. They are going to sign with what ever team offers them the most money. NY is an attractive place , especially for the young guys.
Some one like Eli, at the end of his career who has made his money would likely take less for another shot at a Superbowl but the guys we should be targeting will find NY more than attractive. The only team that has an advantage as far as younger guys may be the Dolphins. No state income tax and South Beach has drawn alot of athletes to the Dolphins, Marlins and Heat. That nearly 9% income tax adds up over the life of a contract.

I don't think the structure is the issue. There probably is not a team in the league where the GM has absolute power over the HC and can fire them and hire them at will. That's an ownership decision.
The problem is when a HC can influence the owner and get the owner to over ride the GM on decisions. Fitz for example. Think ( Brown's, Raiders under Al Davis) good owners hire good GMs and good HCs and let them do their job.

Mac has not really done a very good job , I wouldn't even say he's done a good job. He has been mediocre.
The past draft wasn't great, but decent. He took what was the strength and identity of this team, the D line and turned it into a glaring weakness.
Revis,Cro ,Marshall , Decker all turned out to be terrible signings. Extending Mo, big mistake. Letting Snacks go , not the moves of " an knowledgeable football man".
He added a few decent FAs this season but all are FAs again this off-season.
ASJ stopped drinking beer to get in shape but seems to have all ready checked out for the year. Was just not in the game at all this past Sunday vs the Saints.
Mac missed badly on 2 QBs and passed on some very good QB prospects last year (including Watson). Has ignored the o line , Clady was a disaster and Beachum hasn't been too good.
Where is this roster really at?
Clairborne , ASJ, Ealy , Davis, McCown, all the good additions to the roster this year are FAs. One year rentals who got us a couple of extra wins in a meaningless season. Better than Idzick ? Yes by far.
A great GM deserving absolute control of the organization? Not even close.

All speculation with 0 traction. There is nothing that suggests this will happen. Mac I am sure had input on hiring Bowles.

The problem with this post is it does not realize that Mac worked under same organizational chart in Houston .

I thought you were at best skeptical of Mac's GM abilities. Now it seems as if you like his drafts, and want to let him continue his journey building the Jets. An argument for keeping Mac you made in another post in this thread was keeping a "seasoned" Mac would be more productive/efficient than hiring a new GM, who'll likely make some rookie mistakes as Mac did. I'm not excited with any of Mac's draft picks thus far. He's made some questionable draft picks and some questionable signings. I don't expect any GM to be perfect, but I do expect to see some signs we are moving in the right direction. As much as Mac has invested in the Jets defence, I expected to see a better product. You can't tell me it all falls on Bowles. Mac could do better getting those groceries...and we all know Bowles is no iron chef. I want better players and better coaching.

The three bolded words destroy your position as it applies to the Jets. The Jets are not a good organization. The other teams where that works, have a knowledgeable owner or a football man as Team President who makes the final decisions. The Jets do not have either.

Yes, they're two different positions, and should be measured independently, but there's no reason that they can't be measured independently if they are linear. Those are the two most important leadership roles on a team. If the two aren't in lockstep together, the team will have no chance of being successful. The only way to insure that they are on the same page and working together is if the GM hires the HC and is his superior, or if there is knowledgeable owner or Team President. Even in the latter cases where the owner or President orders the two to work together, it can be an unhappy marriage where one or the other is subtly sabotaging the other, or is not able to do what he knows is best for the team, and is having to compromise, or do something that he believe is detrimental to the team.

Your statement that when they aren't linear, there is not conflict of interest is totally laughable. Evidently you're blind or haven't been paying attention to the Jets for the last 7-10 years. There is MORE potential for conflict where they aren't linear. In that scenario, it's difficult to have both the HC and the GM on the same page. They can easily have different philosophies, different visions for the team, and as a result would be working at cross purposes, just as Bowles and Mac are here. You can have two strong egos working against each other, each trying to blame the other. Two clear examples are Rex shooting his mouth off about how great some players are when they are up for new contracts, and the situation with Bowles and Mac in 2016 regarding Fitz. Mac clearly didn't want Fitz back, or if he was back, only on a cheap deal. Bowles stated that Fitz was his starter and campaigned in the media for Fitz to be brought back. If it was a linear situation, Fitz would never have been back, and Petty and Hack would have been developed as much as they could be, and we might not be desperate for a QB now. If it was linear, we wouldn't have been stuck with Rodgers at DC for the last two years. I could go on and on. Sorry, but you're just clueless on this issue.

If a GM has invested a high draft pick in a player, he should play, and have every chance to develop. Then if that player proves to be a bust, it is clear that the GM missed on the pick, and there's no blaming the HC for not trying to develop and/or not playing that player as there is with the Jets.

Traditionally, GMs have always been superior to HCs, and they hired and fired them. That's who says they are higher up the organizational ladder. Traditionally, they also weren't bean counters, but were more experienced football men. The bean counter GMs just came along with the salary cap.

Nice response. Fair enough. I can totally live with that. I'm kind of dishearten though, that many people here want him fired all together. I feel he has done some good work so far. I think the early direction by the Johnson brothers forced Mac's hand into some bad decisions, ala Revis, Mo and a couple of others. Should have started the rebuilt process from day one.

Thanks. Don't let the negative nellies get you down. I don't think Jets fans will ever agree on anything. I mean we have Jets fans trashing Joe Willie Namath, and I see some of the most laughable inane suggestions on Jets fan sites. Some fans are just clueless. The people who want him fired altogether have unrealistic expectations, and are the same people who have trashed him almost since the day he was hired, and the same people who have trashed Petty and Hack ad nauseum. They wouldn't give him credit if a gun was put to their heads. They never admit when they are wrong. They're too insecure and proud and think they know it all. Eff 'em.

Of course, the rebuild should have begun day one of Mac's regime, but we know that Woody was tired of the team not making the playoffs, and because he didn't understand that the team didn't have the talent or QB to be a successful team, and because Idzik hadn't used the cap space, Mac was forced to overspend and bring in some players, that he probably wouldn't have otherwise. Mac's far from perfect, but he's the best GM we've had in decades, and he's far more knowledgeable than the two Johnson stooges.

This was also due to the Jets having hit the salary floor multiple years in a row with Idzik and being forced to spend money that off season. I believe that first season Mac was GM, he did not have his scouting team in place and they were forced to used the previous staff's scouting team and scouting reports.

I'm still on the fence. I like the idea of giving a regime a longer chance, but also don't want to settle for mediocrity for too long. I like some things about Bowles, but other decisions leave me angry and wanting him out. I feel similarly about Macagnan. He's also made some very good moves, but whiffed on others. The Mo Wilk resigning actually could be a huge issue if it in fact came from him since it sounds like Bowles had big reservations about it (maybe it came from above Mac though). This year they seemed to overachieve and were quite competitve all season despite this roster looking like a tank/rebuilding job. Ultimately, I'm willing to see if Bowles continues to improve as a coach and if the team can get better in 2018 given how good they've been with the roster as is and the vast amount of cap space and extra draft picks. And I really like the work John Morton has done. BUT, I'm not going to complain if they can Bowles either.
My best case scenario: Bowles and Mac for 2018, but fire Kacy Rodgers. I think he's a justifiable scapegoat.

I don't know terms of Mac's contract but I'd rather select #5... keep Mac for another year, fire Bowles and Kacy, force new HC to report into Mac.

If Mac sh*ts the bed in FA and draft well they'll suck again and they'll have a top draft choice for the new GM. Of course that starts the whole cycle of not allowing the GM to pick his HC but it's the Jets.. we expect it.

Ah, Birmingham, brings back a lot of memories. Was there back in 81 as a field rep. Had to drive through all those busy round-abouts, lol...what an experience.

Oh I am from further North than Birmingham but yes it has the notorious spaghetti junction but I guess that is nothing compared to some of the on and off ramps you possess in the states lol
