Shaving points? Are you talking about intentionally as part of a gambling scheme? If so, I've never heard about that.

It's just a joke. Some of throws late that season were so horrendous, it looked almost intentional.

I don't disagree. Rex and the team would turn their back on that built up identity in crunch time/high stress situations and subsequently lost his credibility with the fan base when the losses started piling up.

Agree on all accounts. I likened him to vizzini in the princess bride playing the poison cup game with Wesley. (Not sure who will get the reference) he just thought he was smarter than everyone else.

Cimini is still an idiot - he should be covering some other team - preferably the Toledo Mudhens.

The biggest irony of the last 17 years is the last 5 Jet head coaches had winning records in their first season, and three made the play-offs.

You could argue that of Groh, Herm, Mangini, Rex and Bowles, 2006 was the worst team of the bunch, so 2006 was a geater accomplishment, but generally, it was better to get rid of Mangni. Rex inherited his 2008 team, with a slight upgrade on defensive personnel and serious downgrade at QB, and went to AFC championship. Of course, it could be argued that #1 defense and #1 rushing team should be in the Super Bowl, but that's another story,

Feelings about him aside, Cimini is accurate and correct.

Tons of $ spent on players (mostly defense of course) over last 7 years with terrible results.

Who says Bowles is "disciplinarian" ??? Not in my book

Just bad decisions and no solid philosophy like the Maras and Rooney..even Kraft/Bellichicken

    SMH forever and a day

Sanchez at QB believe it or not was enough??...I think 2010 was a fairly lucky run

Team imploded at Playoffs ...not legit to beat the big boys

One thing that Mangini seemed to get done that hasn't been brought up: Getting the most out of role players. I felt like, particularly on defense, guys that I had no expectations for whatsoever were making real contributions to the team. Guys like Hank Poteat, Mike DeVito, Drew Coleman, Cody Spencer, Abram Elam were making solid contributions to those 2007-2008 teams. Do you remember any time since then that so many "no-name" guys came here and started to look like good additions?

That said, Mangini is my least favorite Jets coach since Kotite. Just keeping in mind that he wasn't without his virtues.

This is not and had not been the worst team in football. If they were, wed be better off but they're not. Theyre middling and continue to be.

  12. It all cries out for a head of football operations who can steer the course w big picture philosophy & intelligence while also acting as a liaison to Woody.its the only way this team will be capable of forming an identity in which to proceed

OK, thanks. I wondered if you meant something like that. Something like that would have been a HUGE deal and all over the media, and I never heard anything to that extent.

The thing is, Mangini probably was smarter than anyone else around the Jets.

The single biggest problem with the Jets is clueless ownership - Hess then Woody. Neither of them installed a true football guy in charge of all things. Instead they relied on their own "expertise", or a committee of advisors, but never installed an overall mission/identity. And of course, still haven't. It's been a succession of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I really wish Woody would give Holmgren a call and see if he would take the job as Pres. of Football Ops.

As for Mangini? Funny how time turns sinners into saints.

Maybe, I'm nit denying his eye for talent. But you can be too smart for your own good.
The princess bride reference was after the chiefs game when they aired it out vs the chiefs 30th ranked run defense. He figures they would expect us to run( which they should have and we should have) so he wanted to pass. Rather than take advantage of the weakness he thought it was better to outsmart them. That's when he lost me. But man he could find players.

The one positive for Hess is that I don't think he "meddled." He let the GM and HC do their jobs. He knew enough to know that he didn't know anything about football. Where he screwed up is hiring some of the losers he did, being too patient with them, and never hiring a quality football man to run the team. He always hired marketing, real estate of businessmen to run the team.

Johnson doesn't have enough sense not to meddle. He has done basically the same as Hess in terms of hiring marketing and real estate men to run the team instead of a football man. Maybe he thought Parcells would be that guy, but if so, he was foolish to trust Parcells.

One can definitely be too smart for one's own good. I remember that Chiefs game. Do you think that was Mangini or Schotty? Of course, Mangini could have ordered Schotty to change the philosophy, so he bears the final blame as HC, but maybe he was trying to show faith and trust in his OC. Schotty admittedly outsmarted himself when he had too much time to think. That's why the Jets always, or almost always (they may have won one) lost in their first game following the BYE week or when he had two weeks to prepare for a game.
