Yes, Schottenheimer was a choke artist in the playoffs. But while so many other coaches have lost championship games, he seems to have lost more. What this makes me think is that the real difference-maker in winning a championship is the H.C. Yes, you almost always need a great QB - although if your other pieces are great you can win with an average QB - but in the end I think it comes down to coaching. Give me a H.C. who has won a SB, and I'll count on him making my team at least a regular contender, if not actually a champion. So, whoever the Jets look to get after Bowles - and I don't have any doubt that Bowels will be gone after this season - they should open the vault and get a SB winning coach (Sean Peyton?).
While SB winning coaches have made other teams a contender, none have ever won a SB with another team. Better to go with a SB losing coach, or a coach who failed at his first or second stops and learned as he went along.
I'm not sure if it matters, as long as they've made it there. They know what it takes to get there and what the experience is like. They have the legitimacy from getting there. I'd rather gamble on a coach who made it to the SB and lost than a HC who's never made it to the SB, especially one who was a "failure" at his first or second stop. Here we disagree. I think it's best to have a HC who has "been there, done that" than one who has never come close. Parcells was an exception, but he won one with the Giants, came close with the Pats, and within a game of getting to a 3rd SB with the Jets. Mike Holmgren won with the Packers, lost with the Seahawks and with the Packers. Don Shula lost with the Colts and Dolphins, but also won a couple with the Dolphins. Dick Vermeil lost with the Eagles, but won with the Rams. I may have missed someone, but I think that's it for HCs who have won and lost SBs with different teams. Looking at the winning and losing SB HCs, more winners have repeated getting back to the SB (albeit with the same team), than losing HCs. Plenty of very good coaches have never made it to the SB. Some made it once, and either lost or won and never made it back again. Some made it numerous times, losing every time.
That's a valid point, but there's a first time for everything, and if a SB winning HC were available, I would take him over someone who has never been there. The main point is that I'm tired of the Jets taking rookies and retread losers. Open the vault up and make someone like Peyton an offer he can't refuse.
I don't think so. Woody's certainly stupid enough to do something like that except for one thing. I think he wants high character players as much as Mac. Marvin Lewis obviously doesn't care about character. I don't think they'd ever agree. Also, if Woody were to allow Mac to make the hire, I don't think that Mac would ever hire Lewis.
Good points ...thanks for talking me off the ledge , brother . I'm that jilted lover that's girlfriend always swears she'll never cheat again...I'm damaged goods when it comes to our beloved Jets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks. You're welcome. Always glad to help a fellow Jets brethren off the ledge. I've been there a few times myself and there were always others who helped talk me off the ledge! I totally understand, my friend. Anyone who has followed this team for more than 10 years (maybe 5) can understand why we're "damaged goods."
Just to make you more depressed, just think of all the money you've spent over they years on tickets, parking, tailgating/concessions, souvenirs, etc. You might have been able to buy your own island nation! LOL My hat's off to you, sir! I've been a fan since 1964, but I've never owned season tickets or spent much on souvenirs. I live in NYC from April 1986 to February 2002. During that time I went to 1-2 Jets games a season when I could get tickets, so I do have some firsthand, in-person suffering experience, but nothing like you.
