This absolutely sounds like a Woody move to sell merchandise during a season where fans will not be showing up to games.

Ok 1, all NFL merchandise sales are split evenly amongst the teams so thinking you can sign player x for $2mil, sell 3mil in march and profit is just wrong
2, way post prime Steve smith is not a seller in any market. He is not that sport transcending player that tebow or favre was.
Your thinking is just way off base here

I am in agreement with a player coach scenario .. with the player aspect being in the far far BG. Smith also played special teams, which is something he could still contribute and help mold. Personally, I think they just want positive examples/contributions of leadership for the lockeroom. A lot can rub off on our young players and if Richardson stays, a few positive vets can cancel out his negativeity in the BG or at least backup the young players that step up to do so.

Probably the latter considering they were also in on Hightower and gave lip service to Cutler coming in.

It makes perfect sense if you sign him to a 1 year deal. He could be a mentor for the young WRs. Without Decker & Marshall the Jets could use a strong vet presence at the position. He'd basically be what Mccown is at QB.

With all the purging of vets...having Steve Smith Sr. in the locker room would be a positive.

It wouldn't even matter how much he could contribute on the field.

I'd love to see him in a Jets uniform.

What are they supposed to do, just keep up with the same nonsense until they find their FQB? You do things when you can. While finding the FQB first may be ideal, life isn't ideal. As you said, Hack or Petty might prove to be their FQB. If not, the team's culture will not be that firmly established that drafting a QB next year will be problematic or a need to retrofit. That's even more true if Bowles if fired following this season or following 2018.

If this is true, then getting rid of Decker is 100 percent a cost saving move forced by Woody... Which would be very alarming.
